Straight Swords: How to Identify the Blade Type

A straight blade does not define one sword type. Compare edge profile, hilt, dimensions, date, and region to distinguish examples such as the Japanese ken, an Indian straight sword, and medieval European swords.

A straight sword is defined by its blade profile—not by one universal design. Straight blades appear in different periods and regions, and they can be double-edged, single-edged, or change edge configuration along their length. To identify one, look at the blade, hilt, dimensions, date, and documented place of origin together.

What makes a sword “straight”?

The word describes the blade’s overall profile. It does not tell you how many edges the blade has, what the sword was called in its own period, or how it was used. Museum records illustrate the distinction: the Metropolitan Museum of Art catalogs a Japanese ken with a straight, double-edged blade, while the National Museum, New Delhi describes a straight sword whose blade is single-edged at one part and double-edged near the lower end.

When identifying a sword, compare its edge count and profile, blade and overall length, hilt and grip, date, region, and the confidence of its catalog description. A straight profile alone is not enough to assign a historical type.

How straight swords differ across cultures and periods

Japanese ken: an early straight, double-edged form

The Met describes the ken as a straight, double-edged sword based on Chinese prototypes and says the form was used in Japan from at least the third through sixth centuries. Its cataloged fifth-century example, associated with Kumamoto Prefecture, is 59.6 cm long, 3.9 cm wide, and 0.6 cm thick, and weighs 356 g. These measurements describe that particular object, not a standard size for all ken.

The ken is not simply an early version of the later curved Japanese sword. Japan Cultural Expo’s account says iron swords first appeared in Japan during the Yayoi period, with early straight swords brought from mainland China. From the middle of the Heian period (794–1192), tangs lengthened to support two-handed use and blades became curved, marking the emergence of the form associated with later Japanese swords. The Met likewise notes that the double-edged type was gradually superseded by a single-edged type.

A 17th-century Indian sword with more than one edge configuration

The National Museum, New Delhi catalogs a straight sword from Datia, Madhya Pradesh, dated to the 17th century CE. Its 83.6 cm blade is described as single-edged at the beginning and double-edged near the lower end. The record also notes a decorated hilt and a wooden scabbard covered with black leather. It is a clear example of why “straight” does not specify edge configuration.

Medieval European double-edged swords

London Museum catalogs a double-edged sword from England dated to the late medieval period, specifically the early-to-mid 14th century. The collection record gives an overall length of approximately 1,082 mm and a weight of 2 kg. Those figures belong to this object; they should not be treated as measurements for medieval swords generally.

The Royal Armouries Museum Shop describes collection-based replica examples including a mid-14th-century longsword with a straight, double-edged, stiff tapered blade and a 14th-century arming sword with a straight, double-edged blade and narrow fuller. The page’s product measurements are specifications for those replicas, not historical averages.

Catalogs do not all provide the same level of detail. Treat a date, place, measurement, or identification as a statement about the specific record that supplies it; do not infer a complete history from a blade shape or transfer one object’s dimensions to an entire category.

Are straight swords the same as katanas or longswords?

No. “Straight sword” is a descriptive phrase, while ken, arming sword, and longsword refer to more specific forms or categories. The cited Japanese sources distinguish the straight, double-edged ken from the later Japanese sword form, generally single-edged and curved. “Longsword” is not a synonym for every straight blade either: the Royal Armouries replica page uses it for a particular collection-based European design, while its arming sword replica is a separate example.

What to check before buying a replica

The Royal Armouries Museum Shop documents replicas made in collaboration with Windlass Steelcrafts and describes modern 1080 high-carbon steel, full tempering, distal taper, and included care items for that collection. Those are the shop’s statements about its products, not independent testing or a guarantee that other replicas share those features.

A collection-based medieval arming sword replica can help connect a modern object to a documented historical example, but confirm the specific item’s construction, seller information, intended use, and applicable local rules. A replica listing does not establish that the same item is available through other retailers.
