Noire” comparison fits Stranger Than Heaven as a description of its trailer’s mood—not as a confirmed genre or story connection. The 2025 reveal paired period-city imagery and hard-hitting street fights with a smoky, noir-tinged atmosphere. It did not establish that players will solve cases like an L.A. Noire detective, or that the game belongs to the Like a Dragon continuity.
Project Century became Stranger Than Heaven
SEGA announced on June 9, 2025, that STRANGER THAN HEAVEN is the official title of Project Century, which Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio first teased at The Game Awards 2024. SEGA calls it a completely new title from the studio behind Like a Dragon and Virtua Fighter. The title was revealed at Summer Game Fest on June 6, 2025, with SEGA’s English corporate announcement following three days later. SEGA’s announcement

Why the trailer suggests Yakuza meets L.A. Noire
The RGG side: street fighting and crime-drama energy
The reveal trailer showed hard-hitting melee combat in period Japanese settings. That action, alongside the game’s Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio pedigree, makes the comparison to the studio’s Like a Dragon series understandable. Game Informer described the trailer’s style as resembling Like a Dragon with 20th-century noir flair. Game Informer’s June 6, 2025 coverage
The L.A. Noire side: period atmosphere, not confirmed detective gameplay
GameSpot called attention to a smoky nightclub, period nightlife and violent action in the footage. Those details lend the trailer a noir impression, but atmosphere is not proof of an investigation system. The footage and contemporaneous coverage do not confirm a detective protagonist, case-solving loop or direct connection to L.A. Noire. A mercy choice appears in the trailer; a broader morality system remains an interpretation, not a confirmed feature. GameSpot’s June 6, 2025 coverage

What the 2025 reveal showed—and what it did not
Contemporaneous accounts describe a gameplay and title trailer with scenes set in 1915 and 1943, period-city scenery, a nightclub performance and street fights. That is enough to support a comparison based on visual language and action. A trailer, however, cannot establish the complete gameplay loop or the final scope of its systems. In particular, the available reveal coverage does not verify investigation mechanics. Game Informer GameSpot
How SEGA’s later overview expands the setting
SEGA’s May 7, 2026 overview describes an action-adventure story spanning 50 years and five eras and cities. The premise begins in San Francisco in 1915: Makoto Daito, a teenager born to an American father and Japanese mother, travels to Japan after his parents die. SEGA says the cities are inspired by places from Japan’s past, in a “Japan that might have been.” SEGA’s May 7, 2026 overview

| 1965 | Shinjuku, Tokyo |
The later official description also mentions a highly flexible combat system and show-business elements in which players take on the role of a showman. These details broaden the picture beyond the 2025 trailer’s street-fighting and nightclub imagery, but do not turn the game into a confirmed detective adventure. SEGA’s overview

What the comparison means
- Yakuza or Like a Dragon: a useful shorthand for the RGG Studio lineage and the street-fighting action shown, not evidence that this is a sequel or shares that series’ continuity.
- L.A. Noire: a useful shorthand for period-noir atmosphere, not confirmation of detective-led investigations.
- Stranger Than Heaven: SEGA’s announced original action-adventure, with a story spanning five eras and cities across 50 years.
