Strategos has the ingredients of a distinctive classical-warfare game: large formations, command friction, morale, and an unusually broad roster of ancient armies. But “instant classic” is premature. Independent reviews praise its tactical depth and scope while flagging unclear combat feedback, thin onboarding, uneven performance in one reviewer’s test, and no multiplayer. It is a compelling prospect for players who enjoy detailed single-player battles and can tolerate Early Access rough edges.
What is Strategos?
Strategos is a single-player real-time tactics wargame set in classical antiquity, developed by Strategos Games and published by MicroProse Software. Its Steam listing gives January 20, 2026 as its Early Access release date. Rather than focusing only on spectacle, the game emphasizes how formations respond to orders, terrain, fatigue, cohesion, morale, and battlefield disorder. The official Steam listing describes battles spanning nearly a thousand years, from the Persian Wars to the rise of the Sasanian Empire against Imperial Rome.

Generals are part of the command system, not just units to move into combat. Their position affects orders and morale support; when troops are beyond a commander’s verbal range, orders may be sent by courier. That creates a practical trade-off between keeping a general safe and positioning them to influence the battle. The system’s appeal is also its friction: command takes thought, and the game expects players to manage the consequences.
How much content is in Early Access?
According to the developer’s Steam description, the current Early Access build includes six historical campaigns, nine reenactment battles, four map-based campaigns, and a historical battle simulator with more than 120 factions and more than 250 units. These are developer-provided store-page counts, not an independently audited inventory. The listing also promotes custom matchups, letting players set up battles outside the historical scenarios.
#1 Best Overall
- Stratego is the strategic game where you challenge your opponents in the heat of battle
- Your task is to capture your opponent’s flag while defending your own
- Lead your men into battle, every move is crucial
- Includes 2 x 40 pre-printed playing pieces, Game board, Screen and 2 sorting trays for the pieces
- Suitable for 2 players, aged 8+
“Campaign” can mean different things here. The store lists both historical campaigns and map-based campaigns, while one reviewer described the campaign experience as battles strung together. So the game does have campaign content, but players expecting a single, fully developed grand-strategy layer should distinguish that expectation from the listed scenarios and map-based campaigns.
Is Strategos worth playing in Early Access?
It depends on whether the command-and-control simulation is a draw or a barrier. Nuno Marques’s January 20, 2026 review at Strategy and Wargaming rated the game 8/10, praising its range of ancient armies, strategic depth, presentation, and the decisions created by generals and couriers. The review also found that the AI could provide a challenge in single-player.
Rank #2
Matthew Smail’s May 2026 Big Boss Battle review saw potential in the morale, cohesion, fatigue, terrain, and timing systems, but found onboarding thin and the interface unclear about combat, morale, and unit behavior. Marques likewise found combat resolution could feel opaque or static. Together, these reviews suggest that the game’s simulation ambitions are more evident than its explanations: players may need patience to understand why a line is holding, wavering, or breaking.
Performance is another qualification, not a universal verdict. Marques reported difficulty staying above 60 frames per second with full anti-aliasing on the reviewer’s own machine. That is a single reviewer’s experience, not a benchmark or evidence of how the game will run on every PC.
Rank #3
- Good fit: players who enjoy historical armies, tactical positioning, command constraints, and experimenting with battle setups.
- Less suitable: players who want extensive tutorial guidance, immediately legible combat feedback, multiplayer, or a finished and polished experience.
How does Strategos compare with Total War?
Strategos and Total War both deal in large historical battles, but the reviews treat them as different experiences rather than interchangeable games. The central draw in Strategos is command friction and battlefield behavior: generals, couriers, morale, cohesion, fatigue, terrain, and disorder shape how orders play out. That makes it a stronger prospect for players curious about the mechanics of controlling an ancient army than for someone looking only for a familiar, polished battle spectacle.
It is also not a direct substitute for Field of Glory 2. The comparison is useful as a point of reference, not a claim that the games share the same pace or battle system. Consider whether real-time play and command-management decisions appeal more than turn-based resolution, and whether you value a historical sandbox more than a highly guided campaign experience.
Does Strategos have a campaign or multiplayer?
Steam lists Strategos as single-player. The consulted reviews report no multiplayer, so players looking for online or local head-to-head battles should not buy on the assumption that this is a multiplayer game. Its single-player content includes the historical campaigns, reenactment battles, map-based campaigns, and battle simulator described on the store page.
What is planned for the full release?
The developer says it plans for Early Access to last 12 months and intends to add scenarios and units, plus a more refined map-based campaign. Those are plans, not a guaranteed release date or assurance that every planned feature will arrive. The developer describes the current Early Access price as planned to be lower than the price after official release; because Steam pricing can vary by region and promotions, check the live listing for the price in your region rather than relying on a fixed figure.

Verdict: a strong idea, not an instant classic yet
Strategos makes a persuasive case for itself through its ancient setting, expansive army selection, and command systems that give generals and battlefield cohesion meaningful roles. The same ambition creates its biggest risk: independent reviewers found that combat and morale can be difficult to read, and one found the onboarding insufficient. It is worth considering if you want a deep single-player ancient-warfare sandbox and accept Early Access uncertainty; players who need clear tutorials, multiplayer, or a polished finished campaign should wait or look elsewhere.
