Subnautica 2 launched in Early Access on May 14, 2026. It adds a new underwater alien world and optional online co-op for up to three friends, alongside exploration, crafting, base building, and a developing story. The catch is that it is still unfinished: expect bugs and in-progress features, with more content planned for later updates.
What Subnautica 2 adds
Subnautica 2 sends players to an unfamiliar underwater world as part of the crew of the Alterra CICADA colony ship. The official Steam listing describes a familiar survival-exploration loop: explore, scan biodiversity, gather and craft equipment, encounter creatures, and build custom bases. The story follows a stranded crew whose ship AI insists the mission must continue.

Exploration, tools, and building
The store lists several biomes, creatures including Leviathans, craftable tools and equipment, and the Tadpole submersible. These are features of the game, but the launch selection is only part of what is planned for Early Access; the listing says additional biomes, creatures, craftables, features, and narrative are intended for future updates.
Play solo or with friends
Co-op is optional, not a requirement: the game is described as a single-player experience that can also be played online with up to three friends. Xbox’s May 4, 2026 launch preview says players can invite friends across platforms. Unknown Worlds Platform and Infrastructure Team Lead Sverrir Berg said multiplayer was “one of the most highly requested” features. The store lists four pre-designed characters at launch, with more characters and customization options planned during Early Access.

The catch: this is an unfinished Early Access game
Early Access means playable, but not finished. The Steam listing warns that players may encounter bugs, features still in development, and performance issues. The initial version includes a limited selection of biomes, story, creatures, and craftables; Unknown Worlds says it plans to expand the game and address bugs and optimization in later updates. The finished scope and timing of those updates are not specified in the cited store information.
The developer’s earlier schedule update said the planned Early Access release had been moved to 2026 so the team could respond to playtest feedback and add content before launch. It mentioned potential additions such as more biomes, vehicle upgrades, tools, story, and creatures. That was historical context, not a current delay: the game subsequently entered Early Access on May 14, 2026.

Price and release timing
Steam’s Early Access FAQ says the price will increase after Early Access. The Steam listing showed $29.99 USD when checked in 2026; that is a time-sensitive store snapshot, not a guaranteed current price or the eventual final price. The cited official sources do not state a final-release date or final price.
Where and how to play
Steam records May 14, 2026 as the release and Early Access date. Xbox announced Game Preview availability on Xbox Series X|S and Windows PC for that same date, with day-one access through Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass. Catalog availability and subscription terms can change, so check the current Xbox listing before relying on subscription access.

Controller support is another option, not a requirement. In the Xbox launch report, Unknown Worlds Core Tech Lead Snorri Sturluson said controller input was “one of the primary input methods.” The cited information does not establish that a particular controller model is required.
Experimental is a separate preview branch
Experimental is for players who want in-development updates ahead of the standard build, not a synonym for the regular Early Access version. Xbox’s August 12, 2026 guidance says access requires owning Subnautica 2 or having access through an active Game Pass subscription. These preview builds may be less stable and can include bugs, unfinished features, and balance changes.

Should you play now or wait?
Choose the standard Early Access build now if you want to explore the new setting, try optional co-op, and accept bugs and an evolving game. Experimental makes sense if you specifically want to try preview updates and can tolerate greater instability and the separate multiplayer and save rules.
If you want a more complete story and a broader selection of areas, creatures, and craftables before playing, waiting is the safer choice. The official sources cited here do not give a final-release date, so there is no confirmed timetable for when the game will be complete.
