When is the full release?
There is no confirmed 1.0 release date or exact release window. The game’s Steam Early Access description estimates that development in Early Access will last approximately two to three years. That implies a rough 1.0 timeframe of 2028–2029, but this is only an estimate, not a scheduled launch date.

The finished version is planned to include more content and polish than the current build, including additional biomes, creatures, craftables, features, and narrative content. Because the game is still being developed, its scope, balance, performance, and timing can change.
What is included in Early Access?
The current Early Access version includes:
- Single-player gameplay
- Optional online co-op for up to four players total
- Several biomes
- Some narrative content
- Creatures and craftables
- Bases, tools, and vehicles
- The Tadpole submersible
Early Access also means the game is unfinished. Players may encounter bugs, performance issues, incomplete or changing features, balance adjustments, and content that is revised during development. On Xbox, the game is labeled Game Preview, with a warning that it may change over time or may not release as a final product.
Early Access updates
Unknown Worlds’ Early Access roadmap divides development work into three broad categories:
- Focused improvements: smaller features and targeted improvements.
- Hotfixes: urgent fixes and technical corrections.
- Larger content expansions: new areas, biomes, creatures, resources, tools, vehicles, and story content.
The roadmap is subject to change. The latest official development update covered Early Access 1.1, “Adaptive Measures,” which released on July 8, 2026, and previewed work planned for Early Access 1.2 and a later Early Access 2 update. Is Subnautica 2 coming to PlayStation or Nintendo Switch?
There is currently no official Early Access announcement for PlayStation or Nintendo Switch. The confirmed Early Access storefronts are Steam, Epic Games Store, and Xbox/Microsoft Store.

Do not confuse this with the original Subnautica and Subnautica: Below Zero. Unknown Worlds announced Switch 2 versions for those existing games, not for Subnautica 2. Availability on PlayStation or Nintendo platforms should therefore be treated as unconfirmed unless Unknown Worlds announces it.
Does Subnautica 2 support multiplayer?
Yes, but co-op is optional. Subnautica 2 remains a single-player-first survival game with online co-op for up to four players total: one host and up to three additional players.

Cross-platform multiplayer and co-op are supported across the listed PC and Xbox versions. Steam lists Cross-Platform Multiplayer, while Xbox lists both Xbox cross-platform multiplayer and Xbox cross-platform co-op.
The game is not structured as a conventional live-service title. Unknown Worlds has stated that it will not use subscriptions, battle passes, loot boxes, or microtransactions, as outlined in its community letter.

September 9, 2025: Gameplay reveal teaser
After internal community playtests, Unknown Worlds delayed Early Access to 2026 and released a longer gameplay reveal teaser. The studio said the additional development time would allow it to add more biomes, vehicle upgrades, tools, story content, and creatures before launch.

The Early Access Gameplay Trailer premiered during Unknown Worlds’ approximately 120-minute Subnautica 2 Pre-Launch Showcase on May 9, 2026, at 8:00 a.m. PDT. The showcase was streamed on the official Subnautica YouTube, Twitch, and Bilibili channels. Unknown Worlds described it as the world-first gameplay trailer reveal.
