Only three are consistently hostile predators. The others are passive or immobile, so “every Leviathan” is broader than a list of creatures that can attack you.
This guide covers each leviathan’s habitat, behavior, and the important access details—including the late-game depth requirement for Shadow Leviathans and the distinction between finding and curing the Frozen Leviathan.
Every Leviathan in Below Zero at a glance
| Leviathan | Type | Where to find it | Hostile? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chelicerate | Fauna | Purple Vents, Tree Spires, East Arctic | Yes |
| Glow Whale | Fauna | East Arctic, Lilypad Islands | No |
| Ice Worm | Fauna | Arctic Spires | Yes |
| Shadow Leviathan | Fauna | Crystal Caves, Fabricator Caverns | Yes |
| Ventgarden | Flora | Southern Tree Spires | No |
| Frozen Leviathan | Immobile organism | Phi Excavation Site, Glacial Basin | No |
The game’s databank classification includes both giant passive organisms and dangerous predators. That is why Glow Whales, Ventgardens, and the Frozen Leviathan belong in a complete list. See the Below Zero databank reference and the official Subnautica community wiki for the broader classification.
1. Chelicerate
The Chelicerate is an aggressive aquatic leviathan and one of the most common large predators in Sector Zero. It patrols open water and can attack a player or vehicle without warning, particularly in areas where visibility is reduced by vents, cliffs, or darkness.

Where to find Chelicerates
- Purple Vents: Chelicerates patrol the open trench-and-vent region.
- Tree Spires: Look around the large vent structures.
- East Arctic: Another specimen occupies open water farther from the starting area.
Because these are separate habitat areas, entering one Chelicerate zone does not mean every nearby specimen is part of the same encounter. Treat open water near the listed biomes as potentially dangerous and keep an escape route clear.
Is the Void Chelicerate a separate Leviathan?
No—not as an additional ordinary Leviathan species in the standard Below Zero fauna roster. “Void Chelicerate” refers to Chelicerates associated with the World Edge or void area. It should be counted as a location-related designation, not a seventh normal Chelicerate type.
More details are available on the Chelicerate reference page.
2. Glow Whale
The Glow Whale is a passive leviathan-class animal. It is enormous, but it does not behave like the game’s predator leviathans and does not actively hunt the player.

Where to find Glow Whales
- East Arctic
- Lilypad Islands
These regions are the best places to look for them. Their size and bright appearance make them easier to identify than many smaller fauna, but their presence should not be treated as a danger warning. The Glow Whale is included because the game’s databank categorizes it as a Leviathan, even though threat-focused guides sometimes leave it out.
See the Glow Whale reference for its habitat and behavior.
3. Ice Worm
The Ice Worm is an aggressive land leviathan found in the Arctic Spires. It spends much of its time beneath the snow and ice, then erupts near the player, attacks, and burrows away again.

Where to find the Ice Worm
Travel to the Arctic Spires, the large above-water glacier region accessed from the Glacial Basin area. The creature is not a normal underwater encounter: it attacks across the frozen surface, making movement, timing, and vehicle positioning important.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →There is no dependable single “Ice Worm spawn coordinate” that describes every encounter. Its burrowing route can cause it to emerge at different nearby points, so guides promising one exact visible location can be misleading.
Ice Worm console spawn name
If you are testing the creature with commands, its listed spawn ID is icewormspawner, not simply iceworm. The general syntax is:
spawn icewormspawner
The quantity can be added after the ID, for example:
spawn icewormspawner 2
Use this carefully: console commands disable achievements and can disrupt the intended experience.

4. Shadow Leviathan
The Shadow Leviathan is an aggressive deep-water predator. It is one of the most dangerous creatures in Below Zero because it occupies the deep routes used during the late game and can threaten both the player and the Seatruck.

Where to find Shadow Leviathans
- Crystal Caves: Several Shadow Leviathans inhabit this deep biome.
- Fabricator Caverns: This late-game area is also a Shadow Leviathan habitat.
The route to the deepest Architect destination in the Crystal Caves descends below approximately 900 meters. You need the Seatruck Depth Upgrade MK3 to reach that route safely. Entering without the required depth capability can destroy or strand the Seatruck, so upgrade before treating the deepest caves as an exploration destination.
A Sector Zero map lists a Shadow Leviathan point at 1086, -882, -275. Coordinates are not permanent guarantees: the map warns that coordinate data can become inaccurate after game updates, and the creature’s movement makes a coordinate less useful than knowing the correct biome.

5. Ventgarden
Ventgarden is a passive leviathan-class flora organism rather than a mobile animal. It is a gigantic stationary structure with a visible interior and a thermal-vent function. It does not chase, bite, or patrol the biome.
Where to find Ventgarden
Look in the southern section of the Tree Spires. The adult structures are large enough to stand out from ordinary flora, but their stationary nature means you should search the southern Tree Spires rather than expect a roaming encounter.
For a direct console teleport, use:
goto ventgarden
The command takes you to a Ventgarden location, making it useful for identification or testing rather than ordinary exploration.

Rank #4
6. Frozen Leviathan
The Frozen Leviathan is an immobile leviathan-class organism preserved in ice. It is not a roaming predator and will not become a combat encounter when you reach it.
Where to find the Frozen Leviathan
It is inside the Phi Excavation Site in the Glacial Basin. The excavation site is in a cave beneath a tall ice mountain in the basin’s northwest area. Follow the Glacial Basin exploration route to reach the excavation area and the frozen body.
Finding it is not the same as curing it
Reaching the Frozen Leviathan completes the discovery part of the objective, but it does not cure the organism. The cure requires the Kharaa antidote sequence and its specified ingredients. In other words, locating the body is only the access step; the cure is a separate objective.

Commands are optional and are best used for testing, screenshots, or recovering from a problem—not for a normal first playthrough. Save first: using console commands disables achievements and can alter the intended game experience.
Open the console
- PC/Mac: Press Shift + Enter simultaneously. The
~key can also open it. - Controller: Open the Pause Menu, press LB + RB, choose Developer, then select the
>_command button. - Supported controller shortcut: Press LB + RB + LT + RT while the game is running to open the command line directly.
Enter a command and press Enter to execute it. The documented controller path can vary by platform and edition.
Check your coordinates
Enter:

Teleport to coordinates
Use:
warp [x] [y] [z]
For example, a Shadow Leviathan coordinate listed by the Sector Zero map can be entered as:
warp 1086 -882 -275
Because coordinates can become inaccurate after updates and creatures move, use the biome name as your primary guide rather than assuming a teleport point is exact.
Spawn an entity
The general format is:
spawn [NAME] [#]
The quantity is optional and defaults to one. Entity IDs do not always match the creature’s displayed name; the Ice Worm’s documented ID, for example, is icewormspawner.
Important oxygen warning
The oxygen command grants unlimited oxygen, but it may not prevent a death state that has already begun after your oxygen reached zero. Use it before running out of air, not as a guaranteed recovery after drowning has started.
Nintendo Switch limitation
According to the documented command reference, console commands and the Developer menu work on the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, not the original Nintendo Switch version. Do not assume the same command controls are available on every Switch release.

Which leviathans are actually dangerous?
- Most dangerous aquatic predators: Shadow Leviathan and Chelicerate.
- Most dangerous surface encounter: Ice Worm.
- Large but harmless fauna: Glow Whale.
- Large but harmless flora: Ventgarden.
- Stationary story organism: Frozen Leviathan.
If you are planning a route, the key distinction is not size but behavior. Chelicerates patrol open water, Shadow Leviathans guard deep routes, and Ice Worms attack on the surface. Glow Whales, Ventgardens, and the Frozen Leviathan are leviathans by classification, not because they function as combat threats.
Quick Recap
Common mistakes about Below Zero Leviathans
- Counting only hostile creatures: This omits Glow Whale, Ventgarden, and Frozen Leviathan.
- Adding the Void Chelicerate as a separate species: It is a Chelicerate associated with the void area, not an extra ordinary Leviathan type.
- Looking for the Ice Worm underwater: Its habitat is the above-water Arctic Spires.
- Going deep without the Seatruck MK3: The deepest Crystal Caves route requires the upgrade.
- Assuming the Frozen Leviathan is a boss fight: It is immobile and preserved in ice.
- Assuming discovery cures the Frozen Leviathan: Finding it and completing the antidote sequence are separate objectives.
- Using an incorrect Ice Worm command: Its documented spawn ID is
icewormspawner.
