Suikoden I & II HD Remaster: Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars keeps the two original games’ stories at its center while updating their presentation and adding convenience features, according to Konami. The advertised changes include HD backgrounds and portraits, revised effects, new environmental sounds, auto-save, battle fast-forward, and a conversation log. The collection does not add a new sequel or replace the two games with a newly written story.

What changed visually?

Konami describes upgrades to the games’ pixel-art presentation rather than a move away from it. Its feature descriptions cite HD-upgraded backgrounds, enhanced sprites and environmental art, and added lighting, clouds, and animated shadows. Nintendo’s official listing also describes HD backgrounds and updated effects on pixel-art animation.

Konami says effects and direction were revised for memorable scenes. It also says Junko Kawano, character designer for the original Suikoden released in 1995, redrew all character portraits for Suikoden I HD Remaster: Gate Rune War. These are publisher descriptions of the changes, not an independent, side-by-side visual assessment. Konami’s launch announcement and Nintendo’s feature listing provide the official descriptions.

What changed in the audio?

The remaster adds environmental sound effects that Konami says were absent from the original releases, including running water, wind, insects, and footsteps. Konami and Nintendo also describe upgraded or HD battle sound effects.

#1 Best Overall
Suikoden I & II HD Remastered PS5
  • Features of Suikoden I & II HD Remaster Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars
  • All background illustrations have been upgraded to HD & updated effects breath new life into pixel art
  • New environmental sounds effects to immerse yourself in this fantasy world
  • Battle SFX are also now HD and add a new level of realism
  • Newly added Auto-Save, Battle Fast Forward, and Conversation Log

That does not mean the music was newly composed or remixed: the cited feature descriptions make no such claim. Konami’s announcement and Nintendo’s listing identify sound effects, not a soundtrack overhaul.

What quality-of-life features are new?

The official feature lists include a conversation or dialogue log, auto-save, and battle fast-forward. Konami also describes double-speed battles and auto-battle. These additions can make it easier to revisit dialogue or move through routine encounters, but official materials do not establish that every feature works identically in both games or on every platform.

  • Conversation log: Review dialogue through an in-game log.
  • Auto-save: The feature list includes automatic saving.
  • Battle speed and automation: Fast-forward and, in Konami’s description, double-speed battles and auto-battle are listed as options.

See the feature descriptions from Konami and Nintendo; consult the listing for the specific platform and game if you need to confirm a particular implementation.

Is the story different?

Konami says the remaster aims to preserve the original story and the charm of its characters. The first game follows a rebellion against a declining empire and the gathering of the 108 Stars of Destiny. The second follows the hero and Jowy amid conflict between the Highland Kingdom and the City-States of Jowston. Together, they form a two-game collection, not a newly written sequel.

The official materials describe the intent to retain the stories; they do not provide a line-by-line script or localization comparison. It is therefore more precise to say the remaster is presented as the original two stories with updated presentation and features than to claim every line, translation, or event is unchanged. Konami’s launch announcement states that the project aims to keep the original story and character charm intact.

Which versions are available, and what platform differences matter?

The collection launched on March 6, 2025 for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC via Steam, Microsoft Games, and Epic, according to Konami’s launch announcement. Konami’s product page lists the Switch 2 release date as June 5, 2025. It lists physical editions for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X, with digital editions across Switch 2, Switch, PlayStation, Xbox, Windows, Steam, and Epic.

Konami’s product specifications show different resolution and frame-rate listings for Switch and Switch 2. The stated figures are platform specifications, not independent performance test results; the page also notes that some specifications depend on the environment.

Nintendo Switch 1920×1080 1280×720 30 fps
Nintendo Switch 2 2560×1440 1920×1080 60 fps

For other buying or upgrade considerations, Konami’s product page lists PS4/PS5 cross-buy and Xbox Play Anywhere support. It also says Switch saves can transfer to Switch 2, but not back to Switch 1; additional content obtained through Switch bonus codes is not compatible with the Switch 2 version.
