Gremio joins automatically, but his revival depends on recruiting the other 107 Stars. Konami describes recruitment and the castle home base as core parts of the game; this guide focuses on the HD Remaster’s specific conditions and missables.
What counts toward all 108 Stars of Destiny?
The 108 are the named Stars of Destiny, not every character who joins the story temporarily. Ted, Odessa, and Sanchez are story characters but do not count toward the roster goal. Characters not in your active party live at headquarters, which grows as you recruit allies and gains useful shops and facilities.

Gremio is an unusual case: he joins early and later dies as part of the story. The all-Stars condition allows his revival and the best ending. Recruit everyone else, and keep named Stars alive in war battles; if one dies, reload a save rather than continue toward the ending with the loss.
How to follow this recruitment route
Use the checkpoints below as a chronological route, not as a complete encyclopedia of every character’s location. The linked HD Remaster recruitment guide has a full character-by-character table; the route here emphasizes the points where timing, party composition, choices, or items can lock you out.

- Talk to optional characters as soon as a checkpoint becomes available, then revisit places after major story changes.
- Keep unusual items and check party requirements before leaving an area. Some recruits will not appear or join without a specific item or companion.
- Do not refuse an invitation or make a story choice casually when a recruit is at stake.
- Before advancing into the final assault sequence, compare your roster with 108 and finish any remaining recruitment.
Early recruits and building the castle
After taking Toran Lake Fortress
Revisit early settlements and outposts for optional recruits: Chandler at Fortress of Kwaba, Kai at Garan, Maas at the Great Forest blacksmith, Marie and Onil at Seika, Sansuke at the Great Forest, and Sergei at Kaku. Recruit Marie and speak with her at headquarters until she asks for a cook; return to Seika to recruit Antonio.
At Kouan, recruit Roc during the mansion sequence. At Kaku, Meg requires Juppo in the active party. Once Lepant joins, take him to the Seika inn to recruit Sheena. Lorelai at Kouan requires Tir to be level 25. Gaspar is in the basement of the Kaku tavern: win 5,000 bits at dice, with Castle Level 2 listed as a prerequisite.
Recruiting around the elves, dwarves, and Pannu Yakuta
Return to the Great Forest and the ruined elf village
Recruit Viki when you encounter her on the Great Forest path. Meese joins at the Village of the Dwarves after Maas has been recruited. After the event at the Village of the Elves, leave and return to the ruins to find Templeton; this opportunity follows the village’s destruction.
Protect the story-dependent recruits
After the duel at Pannu Yakuta, spare Kwanda. Choose the response indicating that something is wrong, then invite him to join. Apple becomes available after Kwanda is defeated. Flik requires a return to Kaku with Viktor after Flik leaves headquarters.

At the kobold village, Fu Su Lu requires a 10,000-bit meal, Gon requires Kuromimi in the active party, and Rubi requires Kirkis in the active party after Kirkis reaches level 41. These conditions are easy to confuse with story progression: check the stated party and level requirement before concluding that a character is unavailable.
Recruiting at Antei, Rikon, and during the Scarleticia events
Check shops and inns in each town
In Antei, look in the armor shop for Chapman and the rune shop for Jeane once the castle reaches Level 3. Mina is at the inn and requires Tir to wear Toe Shoes. At Rikon, Lotte asks you to find her cat in Kaku. Jabba requires a Nameless Urn, which the guide lists as a random drop from a Holly Fairy outside Rikon. Esmeralda requires an Opal.

Complete the Pirate’s Hideout and Milich-related recruitments
At the Pirate’s Hideout, Anji’s group requires Tai Ho and Yam Koo in the active party, and you must defeat the group within five rounds. For Milich’s recruitment scene in the HD Remaster, the GameFAQs guide gives the choices “This man is innocent” and then “Very Well.” The original PlayStation wording differs, so use the remaster wording rather than relying on an older version’s dialogue.
Recruit Milich before trying for Kasios and Ivanov: both require him in the party. Missing Milich therefore blocks more than one Star.

Visit Kirov for Georges’ minigame recruitment. As you progress, check each recruit’s listed location again after meeting the required item, party, or castle-level condition. In particular:
- Bring the three flower seeds to Zen at Qlon Temple.
- Take the Illustrated War Scroll to Hugo at Qlon Temple.
- Bring the Window Orb to Window at the Warrior’s Village.
These are not simply location checks: carrying the required item is part of the recruitment condition. Keep unusual items rather than selling them or leaving an area before checking the recruitment requirements.
Late-game recruitment: reach Castle Level 4 and plan party slots
Clear the castle-level and dungeon recruits
Before the final missions, reach Castle Level 4 and pursue the recruits tied to the larger headquarters. Clive appears at the Rikon inn after the required castle level; Crowley is in the secret passage at the Cave of the Past; Pesmerga is at the top of Neclord’s Castle. These late opportunities can close as the assault sequence advances.
Finish Leon’s letter chain early
Speak to Leon at Kalekka. When Mathiu is available, return to headquarters to obtain Mathiu’s letter, then deliver it to Leon before his late-game window closes. Do this as soon as the Dragon’s Den opportunity opens rather than waiting for the Moravia or Shasarazade sequence; the margin later is small and the deadline can become impossible.

Bring all four blacksmiths for Mace
Mace requires Maas, Meese, Moose, and Mose together in the active party. Recruit him before the Moravia mission and before Shasarazade, while you still have room to assemble the required party around story constraints.
Use the brief post-mission windows
After clearing Moravia, re-enter it to find Vincent de Boule. At the Northern Checkpoint, accept Maximillian and Sancho; refusing them loses both. After the Shasarazade mission, return to the headquarters prison area and speak to Sonya, requesting her assistance. Her opportunity is especially brief, so do this before beginning the final assault.

The HD Remaster guide flags 18 Stars as permanently missable, but “missable” covers several different risks: story choices, missed post-event visits, item or party requirements, and time-limited late-game windows. Use the specific cause below rather than treating the number as a single kind of deadline.
- Kwanda: Spare him after the Pannu Yakuta duel and invite him to join.
- Templeton: Return to the destroyed Village of the Elves after the story event and speak to him.
- Milich: Choose the HD Remaster dialogue options documented above; older PlayStation wording differs.
- Kasios and Ivanov: Recruit Milich first, since both require him in the party.
- Pahn: Recruit him when available, prepare him for the duel with Teo, and win so he survives.
- Zen, Hugo, and Window: Bring the flower seeds, Illustrated War Scroll, and Window Orb, respectively.
- Leon: Complete the Mathiu letter chain before the late-game deadline.
- Mace: Put all four blacksmiths in the active party before story-party restrictions and the deadline interfere.
- Vincent de Boule: Re-enter Moravia after clearing it.
- Maximillian and Sancho: Accept them at the Northern Checkpoint.
- Sonya: Speak to her in the headquarters prison after Shasarazade and ask for her help.
- War battles: Keep named Stars alive; reload if one is lost.
The guide’s full missable list also includes Esmeralda, Crowley, Pesmerga, and Clive. Check their requirements and recruit them before pushing into the closing assault sequence.
When to stop and verify your roster
Before beginning the final assault on Gregminster, make sure every optional recruit is complete, particularly Sonya and the other late-window characters, and that no Star has died in a war battle. The all-108 check is made before the assault according to the GameFAQs walkthrough; the HD Remaster guide places Leknaat’s visit on the eve of the final battle as the condition point for Gremio’s revival. Treat the start of the final assault sequence as the last safe checkpoint.
