Super Mario Advance 2 brings the core Super Mario World adventure to Game Boy Advance, but it is not a byte-for-byte reproduction. The levels and defining ideas remain those of the 1990 platformer; the GBA release adds selectable Luigi with a longer float, changes several conveniences and interactions, and trades some of the original presentation for portable play. Which version feels right depends less on finding a different adventure than on deciding which of those small changes matter to you.
Is Super Mario Advance 2 a different game?
Not in the sense of a new campaign. Nintendo presents the GBA release as a recreation of the SNES classic: Mario (or Luigi) explores Dinosaur Land, rides Yoshi, flies with the Cape Feather, and searches for hidden exits through varied stages. The defining adventure and its level-based, secret-seeking structure are shared with Super Mario World.

That distinction answers a common question about levels, items, enemies, and bosses: the GBA edition is principally a portable version of the same game, not a sequel or a collection of new stages. Its most meaningful differences are in how you choose and handle characters, a few completion and accessibility conveniences, and the audio-visual presentation.
Nintendo’s UK product page describes the GBA game’s features and calls it a recreation of the SNES title. That is Nintendo’s description, not an independent comparison.

What changed between the SNES and GBA versions?
| Area | Super Mario World (SNES) | Super Mario Advance 2 (GBA) |
|---|---|---|
| Play context and multiplayer | Nintendo records two-player alternating play on the original Super Famicom release. | Nintendo Japan lists support for one to four players and both single- and multicartridge link play. Its product listing does not spell out every link-mode detail. |
| Character choice | The cited official pages do not establish the same before-level choice between separately handled Mario and Luigi. | You can choose Mario or Luigi before a level; Nintendo says Luigi can float longer. |
| Extra character and Yoshi behavior | The cited comparison does not establish equivalent changes for the SNES release. | Nintendo Life’s 2015 review reports Luigi-specific interactions and more accessible colored Yoshis in the North American version. |
| Completion convenience | The cited comparison does not establish an equivalent Dragon Coin results screen. | Nintendo Life reports that pressing Select brings up a Dragon Coin results screen. |
| Damage and presentation | The GBA review contrasts its changes with the SNES original but does not provide a full technical comparison. | Nintendo Life reports that damage drops a powered-up character to Super size, and judged the sound mixed, added voice clips potentially intrusive, and graphics lighter. |
The GBA-specific assessments in the table come from Tim Latshaw’s Nintendo Life review, published 6 January 2015, and describe the North American version. They are the reviewer’s observations and judgments, not universal preferences or claims from Nintendo.
Portable play and multiplayer
The original’s documented two-player mode is alternating play. The Japanese GBA listing instead specifies one-to-four-player support and single- or multicartridge link play. Those are different ways of framing play with another person, but the official listing does not explain precisely how every link option works; it is safest not to infer details from the player-count line alone.

Luigi and character handling
The clearest official gameplay difference is that the GBA version lets you pick Mario or Luigi before entering a level, and Nintendo says Luigi floats longer. Latshaw’s review identifies further Luigi-specific interactions. If you like choosing a character for a run rather than treating Luigi as merely an alternate player, this version makes that choice more explicit.
Dragon Coins and colored Yoshis
Latshaw also points to two small but practical changes: a Select-button screen that shows Dragon Coin results, and easier access to colored Yoshis. These do not make the GBA release a different campaign, but they can make collection tracking and trying those Yoshi variants less cumbersome.

The same review says that taking damage while powered up drops the character to Super size. It also describes the GBA presentation as a mixed trade: lighter graphics and added voice clips, with audio quality that the reviewer found uneven and voice additions that some players may find intrusive. These are dated critical impressions, not an objective verdict that one edition looks or sounds better for everyone.
When did each version come out?
| Date | Release | Source |
|---|---|---|
| 21 November 1990 | Super Mario World released for Super Famicom in Japan. | Nintendo Japan |
| 14 December 2001 | Super Mario Advance 2 released in Japan for Game Boy Advance. | Nintendo Japan |
| 9 February 2002 | North American release date listed in the game’s profile. | Nintendo Life |
| 12 April 2002 | European GBA release date. | Nintendo UK |
The Japanese and European dates are from Nintendo; the North American date is from Nintendo Life’s game profile. The UK product page also lists a Wii U version and says purchases through the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS eShops ended on 27 March 2023. That notice is specific to those storefronts; it does not establish availability on every current platform or in every region.

Which version should you play?
- Choose the SNES original if you want to experience Super Mario World in its original release context and its documented alternating two-player mode.
- Choose the GBA edition if portable play, a selectable Luigi with a longer float, link-play support, or the added Dragon Coin tracking screen appeals to you.
- Consider presentation preferences if sound and graphics matter more to you than those conveniences: the 2015 review specifically notes lighter graphics, added voice clips, and mixed audio in the GBA version.
For anyone seeking the game today, the GBA edition is also a physical Game Boy Advance cartridge release. Nintendo’s historical product information confirms the platform and release; it does not establish current stock or prices. Used-cartridge condition, authenticity, seller reliability, and availability need to be checked with the individual seller.
