To recruit all 108 Stars of Destiny in Suikoden II, follow the story in order, complete optional recruitment events before their windows close, and keep track of characters who need specific items, party members, castle levels, or stats. This spoiler-conscious checklist highlights the crucial missable setup and later requirements without listing the entire roster far ahead of your progress. Some recruitments are automatic; others are optional. The specific conditions below come from RPG Site’s walkthrough, while Konami’s official pages describe the 108-star goal and castle system.
Spoiler note: The early checklist includes names and recruitment mechanics. RPG Site warns that its chronological guide contains minor story references, so read only through your current point in the game.

What counts as recruiting all 108?
The objective is to gather the 108 Stars of Destiny. Recruits do not all become active fighters: Konami describes the castle as a home base where characters outside the current party reside, and some provide services such as shops. The walkthrough also identifies roles including Hai Yo as cook, Jeane as Runemaster, and Emilia as librarian. Recruiting broadly therefore means building the base roster, not just filling battle slots. Konami: game system

Early-game checklist: protect the opportunities you can miss
These early examples are useful checkpoints, not an exhaustive roster. Before advancing beyond a location or event, check whether you have completed its optional recruitment task.
Kyaro and the early journey
- Mukumuku: RPG Site describes an optional recruitment opportunity in Kyaro and a later second chance. If you miss the early opportunity, continue with the guide rather than assuming the character is permanently unavailable.
- Rikimaru: The recruitment involves resolving his meal debt.
- Millie: Complete her pet-related quest.
- Kinnison and Shiro: Follow up on the bird-nest event.
- Zamza: Have Nanami in the party for the required encounter.
Before leaving the Muse segment
Complete the Elza sequence early if you want a later chance to recruit Clive. RPG Site says missing this setup prevents Clive’s later recruitment:
- Meet Elza in Muse and take her packages.
- When Clive asks, tell him you have not seen Elza.
- Return the packages to Elza.
- Look for Clive’s later recruitment opportunity in South Window.
Also consider Tuta, Anita’s three errands, and Templeton during this part of the route. These are optional tasks to track alongside the main story.

Gilbert’s one-time war encounter
Gilbert’s recruitment depends on what happens during a war battle. RPG Site’s instructions are to attack his unit and damage it so that he falls back and changes sides. Because the opportunity is tied to a single battle, make a save before the encounter and check the guide’s conditions before starting it.
Recruitment gates to track as the castle grows
Some characters become available only after you meet a specific condition. The following examples show the kinds of requirements to watch for; consult the linked chronological guide for the full roster and exact sequence.
| Character or task | Requirement reported by RPG Site | What to track |
|---|---|---|
| Tetsu | Riou must become “Toasty” by using Fried Tacos. | Keep Fried Tacos available for the required interaction. |
| Stallion | Use Run Away or Let Go 50 times and reach Castle Level 2. | Track the battle command uses and castle level. |
| Hix and Tengaar | Complete their linked task in Kobold Village. | Follow the paired quest rather than treating them as unrelated recruits. |
| Badeaux | Bring an animal-type party member and reach Castle Level 3. | Check party composition and castle level before seeking him. |
| Connell | Have a Sound Set. | Acquire the required item before attempting recruitment. |
| Gordon | Reach 50,000 total profit from trading. | Keep a cumulative record of trading profit. |
| Bob | Have at least 80 recruits. | Return after expanding the roster. |
| Gantetsu | The active party must have at least 400 total strength. | Check the combined strength of the current party. |
| Genshu | Have a party member with Weapon Level 14. | Develop one character’s weapon to the stated level. |
| Mazus | Have at least 100 recruits and Castle Level 4. | Meet both the roster and castle requirements. |
Choices that change the roster or its composition
Kasumi or Valeria
RPG Site describes Kasumi and Valeria as mutually exclusive choices. Its stated tradeoff is that Valeria is the stronger fighter, while Kasumi gives earlier access to Rokkaku. Choose based on which benefit matters more to your route; the guide does not present this as a way to collect both.
Ridley and Boris
Ridley and Boris are replacements who share one Star of Destiny, rather than two separate stars to collect. Their story outcome changes which character occupies that roster position.
Feather, Ayda, and the animal choice
Feather is required for Ayda. In the route described by RPG Site, you can choose between Abizboah and Sigfried. Treat Feather’s requirement separately from that choice: recruiting the required character does not mean every alternative in the branch can also be obtained.
How to use the checklist without spoiling later events
- Keep the RPG Site guide open only to your current story point; its walkthrough contains minor story references.
- Before a major departure or one-time battle, check for optional recruitments tied to the current location or event.
- Track conditional requirements separately: items, party members, command uses, trading profit, weapon level, total strength, recruit count, and castle level.
- Save before the Gilbert war encounter, then verify that you damaged his unit as directed.
- If a character does not join, check the stated prerequisite and whether the relevant event has already passed before repeating unrelated recruitment attempts.
For the complete sequence and character-by-character details, use RPG Site’s chronological recruitment guide, moving through it only as far as your progress allows.
