Tesla vs Lovecraft is a fast, top-down twin-stick arena shooter that pits Nikola Tesla against waves of Lovecraftian monsters. Steam’s review snapshot, captured October 8, 2026, shows a stronger response from purchasers than the critic aggregate displayed on the store page: 89% positive from 851 Steam purchaser reviews, versus a Metacritic score of 73. That split makes it worth looking at what the game offers—and whether its short, hectic arena fights are your kind of action.

What kind of game is Tesla vs Lovecraft?

Developer and publisher 10tons Ltd released Tesla vs Lovecraft on January 26, 2018. Steam describes it as an “intense top-down twin stick arena shooter”; the official game site also identifies it as a top-down arena shooter by 10tons. The premise is deliberately pulpy: you play Nikola Tesla and battle Lovecraftian creatures with weapons, inventions, gadgets, teleportation, and a Tesla-Mech. These descriptions establish the setup, not a hands-on judgment about how well every weapon or encounter plays.

The basic appeal is easy to read: aim, move, and survive as monsters fill the arena. Its distinctive hook is the collision of a historical inventor and cosmic-horror creatures, rather than a realistic treatment of either subject. If that mash-up sounds entertaining, the premise gives the action an identity beyond a generic monster-filled arena.

What do the reviews say?

On the Steam store page, the all-time purchaser rating is labeled “Very Positive”: 89% of 851 Steam purchaser reviews were positive in the snapshot captured October 8, 2026. The same page displayed a Metacritic score of 73. That is a score, not a complete critic breakdown: the captured listing did not show the platform-specific critic count or its distribution. Both figures can change as reviews accrue or storefront information updates.

#1 Best Overall
Plants Vs Zombies Battle for Neighborville Complete Edition - Nintendo Switch
  • Ready the juice cannons and prepare for battle in the wackiest shooter yet
  • Tackle hilarious missions and defeat epic bosses to collect medals and unlock outrageous outfits
  • PvE Offline: Discover giddy park, PvE free-roam regions and private play modes all without an internet collection
  • Rux Coin Store: Earn in-game coins only through play, and spend them to unlock cool items, characters and perks

The two signals are best read separately. Steam’s percentage reflects purchaser reviews on that platform; Metacritic’s displayed figure is a critic aggregate. Neither number alone tells you whether you will enjoy the game’s pace, repetition, or local multiplayer. Steam reproduces a GameWatcher review excerpt describing “rapid, frantic gameplay” in short portions and praising the soundtrack. The store page also displays brief comments attributed to Giant Bomb and Destructoid, including a comparison to Crimsonland and a reaction to the Tesla-versus-monsters premise; those are publication attributions as shown on Steam, not a substitute for a full review.

Does the gameplay sound like a good fit?

It may suit you if you want quick, active fights

The publisher’s arena-shooter description points to combat centered on movement and aiming against waves of enemies. That format is a good match for players seeking compact action sessions rather than a slower, story-led adventure. The Steam excerpt’s reference to “snackable portions” supports that impression, though it is one publication’s characterization, not a guarantee about every session or the game’s overall length.

Farmers Vs Zombies (Nintendo Switch)
  • Combining elements from farming, Tower defense and time-management genres
  • set up and Cultivate your farm with a lot of different fruits, vegetables and animals
  • build, manage and upgrade your own restaurant and provide the others with a wide variety of dishes
  • protect your farm by building mazes and towers. Our zombies are vicious vegetarians!
  • design your own character

Consider your tolerance for repetition

A wave-based arena structure can make repeated combat and upgrades central to the experience. The available review information does not establish how varied the encounters remain, how balanced the weapons are, or how long the campaign lasts. If those details are deciding factors, the review scores cannot answer them by themselves; look for a review that specifically covers progression and variety, or check current gameplay footage before buying.

The theme is a major part of the hook

The game sets Tesla, his inventions, and a Tesla-Mech against Lovecraftian monsters. That heightened premise is likely to appeal most if you enjoy playful, over-the-top genre combinations. It is not presented as a historically grounded Tesla story or a quiet adaptation of Lovecraftian fiction.

Rank #3
Minecraft - Nintendo Switch
  • Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures
  • Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
  • Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
  • Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
  • Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only

Can you play solo or with friends?

Steam lists both single-player and shared/split-screen co-op. That supports solo play and couch co-op on one screen; the listing does not establish online co-op, so do not assume you can join a friend remotely. Steam also lists full controller support and specifically names Xbox controllers. A compatible controller is optional, not a stated requirement, and no particular model is verified here.

Platforms, requirements, and DLC

The Steam listing captured for this article includes Windows, macOS, and SteamOS/Linux minimum requirements and marks the game Steam Deck Verified. Those are storefront details and may change; check the current listing for the requirements and compatibility relevant to your device and region. Steam lists Tesla vs Lovecraft: For Science! as downloadable content, so do not assume it is included with the base game. The store page is the best place to confirm the current edition and what a purchase includes.

Asylum - Nintendo Switch
  • A chilling journey into the dark mind: Explore the Hanwell Mental Institute and uncover its dark past.
  • Experience a mind-bending original storyline as recurring hallucinations blur the line between memory and reality.

  • Solve evocative challenges that reward wit and observation.
  • Enter an engrossing atmosphere with a memorable soundtrack inspired by 1980s horror films and John Carpenter.

Verdict: who should consider Tesla vs Lovecraft?

Tesla vs Lovecraft is worth considering if you want a twin-stick arena shooter with a brisk monster-fighting premise, a quirky Tesla-versus-cosmic-horror theme, and the option of local split-screen co-op. The strong Steam purchaser rating is encouraging, while the lower Metacritic score displayed there suggests critics were less enthusiastic overall; the available figures do not explain that difference. If you need firm answers on campaign length, combat balance, or long-term variety, those points are not established by the listing and review snapshot summarized here.
