The strongest moments balanced surprise with useful game reveals; the weakest let anticipation outrun what the show actually delivered. And then there was the unexplained rooster.
How to judge the showcase
These are editorial picks, not an official ranking. The yardsticks are how surprising a moment was, how much concrete information it offered, and whether it was entertaining or awkward. The event recap lists 49 announcements and 49 games; the main showcase ran from 9:00 to 11:00 PM UTC on June 6, 2025. The recap’s schedule and lineup provide the broad picture, while PC Gamer’s live blog records specific moments as they happened.
The best: reveals that gave the show personality
Felt That Boxing was the delightfully oddball standout
An abrasive puppet boxing game is not the kind of reveal most viewers would have predicted, and its trailer’s irreverent tone made it an unusually memorable change of pace. PC Gamer highlighted its dialogue, and GameSpot also included the game among the showcase’s featured titles. One commenter in a viewer discussion thread called it “The puppet game was the best thing shown.” That is one person’s reaction, not evidence of a broader consensus.
Mortal Shell II and Death Stranding 2 gave the lineup recognizable anchors
Both titles stood out in coverage of the event, helping give a sprawling announcement reel some immediate points of reference. Geoff Keighley described the show as having “a little bit of everything,” according to PC Gamer’s live blog; the contrast between a sequel to a dark action game and a high-profile return to Death Stranding’s world illustrates that range. The available event recap does not establish detailed gameplay, release timing, or other specifications for either title, so their value here is as notable lineup moments rather than fully assessed game previews.

The worst: a tease that spent anticipation without paying it off
Resident Evil raised expectations for an announcement that did not arrive
The next Resident Evil game was not announced in the moment described by the coverage. Instead, Jun Takeuchi teased that its announcement would come soon. A matching-title Yahoo article framed the beat as excitement turning to deflation, though its page redirected to a consent screen and that characterization is therefore best treated narrowly as the article’s framing, not as a verified universal reaction.
The format helps explain why the beat could feel awkward: viewers expecting a reveal got a promise of a future reveal instead. One commenter in a discussion thread asked, “Did they seriously make a video to say wait for an RE announcement like wtf”. That captures an individual viewer’s frustration; it does not establish how most viewers felt.

The most WTF: the rooster with no clear explanation
PC Gamer’s live blog noted an unexplained rooster at the event and reproduced a post from Keighley: “Here’s a rooster looking forward to #SummerGameFest”. The bird was striking precisely because it did not come with an explanation in the coverage. There is no established reason to connect it to a particular game or announcement, so the safest reading is also the funniest: it was a genuinely baffling bit of Summer Game Fest atmosphere.
What the audience expectations reveal—and what they don’t
A viewer thread included complaints about waiting for a Resident Evil announcement and disappointment that anticipated games such as Silksong were absent. Those reactions help explain the gap between a large lineup and an individual viewer’s idea of a satisfying show: 49 announcements can still miss the one reveal someone came to see. But a discussion thread is anecdotal, not a representative poll, and absence from this showcase does not by itself establish anything about a game’s future.

Other announcements that rounded out the show
The event recap also lists Game of Thrones: War for Westeros, Atomic Heart 2, The Cube, and MARVEL Cosmic Invasion, among many others. These add to the sense of breadth, but the available event-level evidence does not support detailed claims about their mechanics, platforms, or release plans. The strongest retrospective distinction is between a broad announcement count and the specific moments that delivered surprise, useful information, or an entertaining jolt.
