There is no single strongest team for every mode in Pokémon Legends: Z-A. For the story, build around type coverage and moves you can time and aim well. For competitive play, Garchomp, Excadrill, and Magearna were prominent in one third-party Legends Z-A OU snapshot—but that April 2026 data is not an official tier list or a guide to the current ranked season.
Is there one strongest Pokémon or team in Pokémon Legends: Z-A?
No universal strongest roster has been established. Pokémon Support says a Pokémon’s strength depends on how it is trained and the challenge it faces, so a team that works in one battle or format may not be best in another. Pokémon Support’s general guidance is a useful starting point, but it does not name a strongest Z-A team.

Z-A also makes execution part of team choice. The Pokémon Company describes battles as real-time: Pokémon move during combat, and the timing of swaps and moves matters. Moves differ in reach, area of effect, and the time they take to execute. A theoretically favorable matchup may be less useful if its move is difficult to land or leaves too little time to react. The official gameplay overview explains these mechanics.
How to build a strong team for the main story
For the campaign, choose a flexible team rather than chasing a fixed six-Pokémon ranking. The official guidance does not publish a strongest story roster. Use the opponents and battle situations you expect to face to decide which types and moves your team needs.

- Join Team MZ and the Mega Evolution Successor, Korrina, to investigate Hyperspace Lumiose, the otherworldly home to rare and hyper-strong Pokémon

- Cover likely opposing types. Avoid relying on one Pokémon or attack to handle every matchup; consider what your other team members can answer.
- Pick moves you can execute effectively. Think about a move’s reach, area, and execution time alongside its type. A move that suits the space and timing of a fight can be more practical than one that looks stronger on paper.
- Keep the team prepared between battles. The Pokémon Company recommends catching Pokémon, training the team, and stocking up on important items before nighttime battle zones and promotion matches. In the Z-A Royale, players start at Rank Z and climb by winning battles and promotion matches. See the official gameplay guidance.
Competitive candidates from one Legends Z-A OU snapshot
If you want names to investigate for competitive play, Garchomp, Excadrill, and Magearna ranked near the top of Showdown Tier’s third-party “Legends Z-A OU” statistics. The figures below cover March 14–April 9, 2026; the page was updated April 11, 2026. They are usage and win-rate statistics reported by that site, not Pokémon Company data.
| Pokémon | Position in the cited snapshot | Usage | Win rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Garchomp | 1st | 28.79% | 54.26% |
| Excadrill | 2nd | 22.39% | 53.96% |
| Magearna | 3rd | 13.47% | 56.02% |
Showdown Tier’s Legends Z-A OU page documents the format and statistics. These are candidates seen in one format and time window—not a tested three-Pokémon team, a universal ranking, or proof that the same choices dominate Battle Club ranked play. Usage shows how often Pokémon appeared in that dataset; it does not by itself establish that a roster suits your preferred playstyle or current rules.

Why Battle Club and ranked play need separate planning
Battle Club Link Battles have different demands from the campaign and from a format-specific usage list. The official description allows up to four players in a three-minute match. Defeating an opponent’s Pokémon earns a point, and attacks can cover a fixed radius or travel along a straight line. That makes a move’s area and reach relevant to hitting multiple or distant targets, as well as its execution time. The Pokémon Company’s Battle Club description outlines these rules.
Ranked rules can also change with the season. The official Season 15 notice specified a Water-type format running August 6–27, 2026; those dates have passed. That notice is not a current eligibility list for October 8, 2026, and the current ranked season’s rules and standings are not established here. Check the live in-game format before building around a seasonal roster rather than treating historical rules as current. The Season 15 notice is a record of that past season.

A practical way to choose between options
When comparing Pokémon for a particular team, weigh the rules and battle conditions rather than relying on one overall ranking:
- Mode and ruleset: distinguish the campaign, four-player Link Battles, and the ranked season’s eligible roster.
- Type coverage: consider the opponents you expect and whether the rest of your team can cover weaknesses.
- Move execution: compare timing, reach, area of effect, and wind-up or execution time.
- Role and risk: think about damage, durability, group or ranged pressure, and vulnerabilities in the specific match.
- Evidence and date: separate official rules from third-party competitive snapshots, and check when any statistics were collected.
Mega Evolution can be another team-planning factor: Nintendo says it increases power and can change some Pokémon’s types. That can affect how a Pokémon fits a matchup, but Mega Evolution alone does not identify the strongest choice for a given mode. Nintendo’s product page describes the feature.
