Sunderfolk launched on April 23, 2025, for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch. Developed by Secret Door and published by Dreamhaven, it is a digital, turn-based co-op RPG inspired by tabletop play—not a physical board game. Players can share a screen and use phones or tablets as controllers, while a 2026 PC update added mouse-and-keyboard controls and native online multiplayer.
When did Sunderfolk come out?
Dreamhaven announced the April 23, 2025 release date on March 25, then confirmed that Sunderfolk was live on that date. It launched on Steam, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch. Dreamhaven’s release-date announcement and its launch-day post document the announcement and release.
Secret Door developed the game; Dreamhaven published it. The game is a tactical, turn-based co-op RPG with tabletop and board-game inspiration. Its shared-screen setup borrows the social feel of playing around a table, but the game itself is digital.
How does Sunderfolk co-op work?
Couch co-op with phones or tablets
For the original shared-screen setup, the game runs on a TV or monitor while each player uses a phone or tablet as a controller and character-information display. One copy supports up to four players. Dreamhaven’s launch materials describe joining without a printed rulebook or a separate copy for every couch player. The phone or tablet is part of the control setup; the sources do not establish a required device model or minimum specification.

Joining on Xbox
In its Xbox launch explainer, Dreamhaven described a host displaying a QR code for friends to scan and use the free Sunderfolk mobile app to join. The host still needs an Xbox controller to navigate the console’s main menu and basic settings. The article also describes remote participation through screen sharing; those steps are specific to its Xbox guidance, published April 23, 2025, and should not be assumed to describe every platform or setup. Read the Xbox Wire launch guide.
PC online multiplayer and keyboard controls
Patch 2.0, released March 10, 2026, added native online multiplayer lobbies for PC and direct mouse-and-keyboard controls, so PC players can play without the Controller app. Steam distinguishes this mode from phone-based couch co-op: each participant in native PC online multiplayer needs their own copy, while couch co-op players can join the host’s copy using phones or tablets. Dreamhaven’s Patch 2.0 notes and the Steam listing describe the current options.

Which way to play should you choose?
| Mode | Where the game runs | Controls and copies | Remote play |
|---|---|---|---|
| Couch co-op | Shared TV or monitor; available on the game’s supported platforms | Players use phones or tablets; one game copy supports up to four players | Xbox Wire’s launch guide described joining remotely through screen share for its Xbox setup |
| Native online multiplayer | PC, added in Patch 2.0 on March 10, 2026 | Mouse and keyboard are supported; each online player needs their own copy | Online lobbies support remote PC play |
If you want a shared-screen game night and phone-based controls, couch co-op is the relevant option. If your group is playing remotely on PC and prefers conventional controls, Patch 2.0’s native online mode is the fit. A Nintendo Switch is one supported platform, not a requirement; choose among the platforms you already use and the play style you want.
Which characters are available?
At launch, Dreamhaven listed six heroes: Arcanist, Bard, Berserker, Pyromancer, Ranger and Rogue. Patch 2.0 added the Vanguard, along with two One Shot scenarios. The six-character count therefore describes the original launch roster, not the current roster listed in those update notes.

PC requirements and support notices
Minimum Windows requirements
Steam lists these minimum requirements for Windows PC: Windows 10 x64 or higher; an Intel Core i5-4590 or AMD Ryzen 3 4100 processor; 8 GB RAM; a GeForce GTX 750 Ti (2 GB) or Radeon RX 570 (8 GB) graphics card; DirectX 12; and 12 GB of storage. Storefront requirements can change, so consult the current Steam listing before purchase or installation. Recommended specifications are also listed there.
What a dated mobile-app notice said
In a notice dated March 23, 2026, Dreamhaven asked couch co-op players to update the mobile Controller app. It reported that some Android users could get stuck at startup after updating to version 2.0.1 and recommended reinstalling the app. The publisher also said it was investigating reports of service errors affecting online multiplayer and couch co-op, while noting that single-player was unaffected. This is a dated notice, not confirmation of an ongoing outage; check Dreamhaven’s Patch 2.0.1 update post for the context of that report.
