Super Evil Megacorp announced $10.5 million in financing on November 6, 2019, and said it would shift its focus to a new, cross-platform multiplayer game then code-named Project Spellfire. At the same time, Rogue Games was set to take over Vainglory’s publishing and live operations. That handoff did not last as announced: by April 2020, reporting said Rogue had stopped supporting the game and Super Evil had regained control of its servers.
What Super Evil announced in November 2019
On November 6, 2019, Super Evil Megacorp announced a $10.5 million financing round led by Andreessen Horowitz, according to GamesBeat and PocketGamer.biz. The company said the financing would support its next game, Project Spellfire, while Rogue Games assumed publishing and live-operations responsibilities for Vainglory.
The announcement presented the moves as a shift in Super Evil’s priorities: Rogue would continue building and operating Vainglory, allowing Super Evil to concentrate its resources on new work. CEO Kristian Segerstrale described that intent to GamesBeat: “They will take on the publishing work and building out Vainglory further, effectively allowing us to focus our resources on a future game.” That was the company’s stated plan, not a guarantee of how the arrangement would unfold.
What Project Spellfire was—and what was only planned
In the 2019 coverage, Project Spellfire was described as a cross-platform multiplayer game, larger in scale than Vainglory. GamesBeat reported that it had been in development for 18 months as of November 2019 and that the target release year was 2020. Those details describe the project and schedule as reported at the time; the coverage does not establish that the game launched in 2020.

GamesBeat also reported that Super Evil was pursuing a “cloud-first” strategy. Its article described Rogue working with Indian partner nCore and said five contractors from Vainglory’s team would remain on that project. Rogue expected monthly updates, according to the same report. These were plans and expectations reported in November 2019, not confirmation that every element was carried out.
Why Vainglory was handed to Rogue Games
The proposed handoff separated the studio’s next project from Vainglory’s continued publishing and live operations. In a statement reported by Game Developer, Segerstrale said: “As we write a new chapter for our studio at Super Evil, we wanted to make sure that Vainglory was in the right hands before we refocus our team on our new game.”

GamesBeat reported that Vainglory had more than 45 million players. That was the publication’s reported figure in November 2019; it is not a current player count or a measure of active users. The same coverage framed the Rogue arrangement as a way to keep developing and operating the game while Super Evil redirected attention to its new title.
What changed by April 2020
The transition did not continue as first presented. On April 7, 2020, PocketGamer.biz reported that Rogue Games had ceased supporting Vainglory and planned a server shutdown. Super Evil regained control of the servers before that shutdown, according to the report. It also said that in-game purchases had been switched off.

The report distinguished the Chinese version, operated by NetEase, from the service under discussion: it said that version remained live and was unaffected at that time. This is a historical account of the situation in April 2020, not verification of Vainglory’s current availability in China or elsewhere.

The November 2019 announcement was both a financing story and a studio-strategy shift: Super Evil secured reported backing for Project Spellfire and planned to move Vainglory’s publishing and live operations to Rogue. The April 2020 follow-up shows that the operating arrangement changed, with Rogue ending support and Super Evil regaining server control. The 2019 release target for Project Spellfire and the 2020 service-status reports should be read as dated reporting, not as evidence of present-day game availability or outcome.
