Super Mario Sunshine has 120 Shine Sprites in total, but you do not need all 120 to reach the final story area. For a full-clear checklist, track the eight episode Shines, two secret-objective Shines, and 100-coin Shine in each of the seven main courses, then finish the Shine objectives in Delfino Plaza and Delfino Airstrip. Nintendo Wire reports that 50 Shines are enough to access Corona Mountain and complete the main story.
How many Shines do you need to beat Super Mario Sunshine?
You need 50 Shine Sprites to access Corona Mountain, according to Nintendo Wire’s 2020 guide. That is a story-clear threshold, not a full-completion target: the game contains 120 Shines. To reach the reported 50-Shine threshold, earn the first seven mission Shines in each of the seven main courses, then collect the first Shine Get at Delfino Airstrip.

The guide below is for the Sunshine version included in Super Mario 3D All-Stars on Nintendo Switch. The collection also includes Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Galaxy. Nintendo describes Sunshine in the collection as featuring updated HD graphics, Joy-Con controls, and a music player; NERD notes that the port uses GameCube emulation technology, with 16:9 HD rendering, updated controller bindings, and HD-upgraded in-game videos.
How the 120-Shine checklist is divided
Nintendo Wire’s 2020 breakdown gives 77 Shines across the seven main stages, 40 in Delfino Plaza, two at Delfino Airstrip, and one additional Shine for collecting 100 coins in Delfino Plaza. Each main course has 11: eight mission rewards, two secret-objective rewards, and one 100-coin reward.

Use a course-by-course checklist
iMore’s walkthrough, last updated September 12, 2022, organizes the collection into seven main courses plus Corona Mountain, Delfino Plaza, and Secret Shines. For each main course, check off Episodes 1–8, then separately confirm its secret-objective and 100-coin entries.

Controls and optional GameCube controller
Nintendo’s tips recommend checking move controls with the minus button, speaking to people and reading signs with A, and adjusting the camera with the right control stick. These basics help when an objective depends on a sign, character, hidden item, or different camera angle.

Nintendo ended digital sales of Super Mario 3D All-Stars on March 31, 2021. Owners who already bought the digital version can still play and redownload it. Nintendo says physical copies may remain available at retailers while supplies last, so check current local listings rather than assuming a copy is in stock.

- A variety of playable characters are available, some with unique attributes that affect gameplay and platforming physics.
- Younger and less-experienced players will love playing as Toadette, who is brand new to both games, and Nabbit, who was formerly only playable in New Super Luigi U. Both characters offer extra assistance during play.
- Multiplayer sessions are even more fun, frantic, and exciting thanks to entertaining character interactions. Need a boost? Try jumping off a teammate’s head or getting a teammate to throw you.
- Features a wealth of help features, like a Hints gallery, reference videos, and a Super Guide in New Super Mario Bros. U that can complete levels for you if they’re giving you trouble.
- Three additional modes—Boost Rush, Challenges, and Coin Battle—mix up gameplay and add replayability, while also upping the difficulty for players who want to try something harder. Players can use their Mii characters in these modes.
Nintendo Support lists version 1.1.4, released October 28, 2025, as the latest update and says the update is required to play the collection on Switch 2. Check the console’s software-update screen if your copy needs updating.
