Turn on Co-Star Mode

Launch Super Mario Galaxy from the Super Mario 3D All-Stars game selection.

Press the controller’s + Button to open the in-game menu. This is the game menu, not the Nintendo Switch HOME menu.

Select Co-Star Mode.

Pair the controllers that Player 1 and Player 2 will use. Nintendo says two players can each use one Joy-Con held horizontally in solo grip; other controller combinations are also supported. The game’s product page specifies one compatible controller per player for multiplayer.

Select a save file. On the File Select screen, choose the P2 star icon to see Player 2’s controls.
What Player 2 does
Co-Star Mode is local two-player assistance, not two players each controlling a character. Player 1 controls Mario, while Player 2 uses the pointer to help during play. The mode is available in Super Mario Galaxy only; the other two games in Super Mario 3D All-Stars do not have its two-player option.

Return to one-player mode
Player 1 can press + to open the in-game menu and select Solo Mode.
Controller and console notes
Nintendo lists Co-Star setup support for Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch Lite, and Nintendo Switch OLED. On Switch Lite, additional Joy-Con or other compatible accessories may be needed; the built-in controls alone do not provide a detached second controller. Nintendo also notes that compatibility and play experience can differ on Switch Lite.

For Switch 2, Super Mario 3D All-Stars must be updated to version 1.1.4 to play. Nintendo lists that update as released on October 28, 2025. If the game will not launch on Switch 2, check for an update from the HOME Menu. The prior version 1.0.1 update, released September 16, 2020, improved the screen display during Co-Star Mode; Nintendo does not say that version 1.1.4 changed Co-Star Mode.

Nintendo says the physical edition is sold through retailers while supplies last. Its digital edition is no longer available for purchase, although people who bought it digitally can redownload it. Current physical stock depends on retailer availability.
