Wonder is a widely praised, inventive 2D Mario platformer, and the original Nintendo Switch game is an easy recommendation if you want a creative, approachable adventure. The later Super Mario Bros. Wonder – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Meetup in Bellabel Park is a separate release, not the version reviewed in the original game’s 2023 coverage. It is most appealing to new buyers and households keen on its added multiplayer; existing owners who mainly play solo have less reason to upgrade.
What do reviews say about the original game?
Reviews of the original Nintendo Switch release praise its imagination, presentation and steady supply of new platforming ideas. Nintendo Life’s review highlights how Wonder Flowers can transform a stage in unexpected ways, while badges let players change their abilities. Its main reservation is difficulty: outside a handful of specific challenges, the main adventure rarely becomes very hard. That is the reviewer’s assessment, not a guarantee of how every player will experience it.
Nintendo’s official product description sums up the central twist: “Classic Mario gameplay is turned on its head with Wonder Flowers in the Super Mario Bros. Wonder game!” Its examples include pipes that come alive and a sequence involving a giant Spike-Ball. Badges add another layer of choice: depending on the badge, players can gain extra platforms, avoid death from falls or lava, or begin a stage with a Super Mushroom.
The original launched on October 20, 2023. Nintendo Life’s review describes it as a polished, consistently inventive platformer with local and online play. Metacritic’s original-game page listed 130 critic reviews when accessed and showed an 8.9 user score from 3,455 ratings, with 89% positive, 8% mixed and 3% negative. Those figures are a dated, changing snapshot of user ratings—not an official score or an objective measure of quality.

How does the Switch 2 Edition differ?
Super Mario Bros. Wonder – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Meetup in Bellabel Park is a distinct release from the original Switch game. Nintendo UK lists it as available now, and TechRadar dates its release to March 26, 2026. Nintendo says the edition adds multiplayer modes, characters, mouse-control support and other features. Those additions should not be confused with the original game’s launch features.
Reviews of the Switch 2 Edition are separate from reviews of the 2023 original. Nintendo Life’s March 2026 roundup and TechRadar’s review describe generally positive additions, but the value depends on how a player expects to use them. TechRadar praised the presentation, extra content and Dual Badges, while finding the multiplayer attractions uneven. Nintendo Life’s roundup likewise points to a stronger case for households interested in multiplayer than for players who primarily want to replay the adventure alone.

Is Super Mario Bros. Wonder worth it?
For a first-time buyer, the original game is a strong choice if creative level design and a forgiving platforming adventure sound appealing. The review consensus is especially encouraging for players who enjoy variety and experimentation more than a sustained difficulty curve. If you want a demanding challenge throughout, note Nintendo Life’s qualification that the main adventure is rarely very difficult apart from selected challenges.
If you are choosing between editions, base the decision on your console and how much the added Switch 2 content matters to you. The Switch 2 Edition makes more sense for a new buyer who wants its extra modes and features, or for a group likely to play together. If you already own the original and mostly play solo, the reviews give less reason to upgrade.

What multiplayer does the original support?
Nintendo lists one to four players on a single system for the original game. Online features require both a Nintendo Switch Online membership and a Nintendo Account. Nintendo also notes that additional accessories may be required for multiplayer, so check your controller setup before planning a group session.
