What the Switch 2 updates change in Super Mario Odyssey
Nintendo of America lists version 1.4.0 as released on June 3, 2025. It adds three Switch 2 enhancements: optimized visuals for the Switch 2 display and high-resolution TVs, HDR support, and GameShare support for two players. In GameShare, one player controls Mario while the other controls Cappy. HDR in TV mode requires an HDR-compatible display. Nintendo of America’s update notes do not give a specific resolution or frame-rate figure for Odyssey.

Nintendo of America lists version 1.4.1 as released June 24, 2025. It addresses several issues to improve gameplay on Switch 2, but Nintendo does not identify the individual issues. Nintendo Japan lists the same versions on June 4 and June 25, 2025, respectively; those one-day differences reflect regional release dates. Nintendo Japan’s update page provides the regional dates.
How to update Super Mario Odyssey
Connect the console to the internet before checking for the update. Use the following steps on Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch 2:

- Mario's new friend, Cappy, lets you master new moves like cap throw, cap jump and capture

- From the HOME Menu, highlight the Super Mario Odyssey game icon without starting the game.
- Press the + or – button.
- Select Software Update, then Via the Internet.
If the console is online and Software Auto-Updates is enabled, software updates download and install automatically. Nintendo says Odyssey save data remains available after downloading the update. Nintendo’s free-update list covers selected Switch games, and the enhancements differ by title. It has grown beyond the initial group of updates in June 2025: Nintendo Australia’s current page also lists games with updates released in January and September 2026. The examples below illustrate the different kinds of changes announced; they are not a complete list. Nintendo Australia’s list includes titles, features and availability information.

These are free updates for eligible games, not paid Switch 2 Editions. If you own a game that Nintendo lists for a free update, you do not need to repurchase it to get that update. The Nintendo Australia page is updated over time, so check it for the latest title-specific details rather than assuming every game receives the same enhancements.
GameShare and online requirements
Odyssey’s GameShare feature supports two players, with one controlling Mario and one controlling Cappy. Nintendo also describes local GameShare separately from online sharing through GameChat. For online GameShare through GameChat, Nintendo’s page says an internet connection, a Nintendo Account and a Nintendo Switch Online membership are required after the open-access period that ended March 31, 2026. These online conditions do not mean local GameShare requires the same online setup. Nintendo’s free-update page explains GameChat conditions.
