Super Monkey Ball: Banana Mania Reviews: Is It Worth Playing?

A large collection of classic-style rolling-platform stages makes Banana Mania appealing, but launch-era reviews warn that repetition and demanding retries can wear thin.

Super Monkey Ball: Banana Mania is a substantial return to precision rolling-platforming, but its large stage count comes with a mixed reception: reviewers praised the content and updates while also pointing to repetition, frustration, and changes from the originals’ feel. Launch-era reviews from 2021 suggest it is best suited to players who enjoy demanding retries—and, especially, local multiplayer.

What is included in Banana Mania?

Banana Mania is a collection built from Super Monkey Ball and Super Monkey Ball 2, with additional stages associated with Super Monkey Ball Deluxe. Nintendo Life reported 300 stages, while GameSpot described the package as repackaging the first two games alongside a selection of Deluxe stages. It is not presented in those reviews as a complete remake of every prior game’s content. (Nintendo Life; GameSpot)

Nintendo’s Switch listing gives October 5, 2021 as the release date and describes platforming, score and fastest-time competition, and online play. The game also includes party games, giving the collection a multiplayer option alongside its solo obstacle courses. (Nintendo Switch listing)

What did reviewers think?

The launch-era reviews point to a real trade-off rather than a unanimous verdict. Nintendo Life emphasized the scale of the stage collection and quality-of-life improvements. GameSpot noted gameplay updates intended to broaden the game’s appeal. IGN’s review summary was more critical of the solo-stage loop, describing the content as repetitive and frustrating and finding local multiplayer more enjoyable than solo play. These are individual critics’ assessments, not a guarantee that every player will react the same way. (Nintendo Life; GameSpot; IGN)

Is it a good fit for newcomers?

It can be, if you are curious about the series’ core idea: steer a monkey inside a ball across narrow platforms, ramps, and other obstacle courses, aiming for the goal while avoiding a fall. Its breadth gives newcomers plenty to explore, and the updated elements noted by GameSpot are intended to make the package more approachable. But the central challenge still depends on careful movement and learning through retries; the reviews do not establish that the updates remove the difficulty or reproduce the originals’ movement exactly.

Consider whether the main loop sounds satisfying to you: a short stage can demand repeated attempts, and a mistake may mean starting it again. Players who enjoy precision challenges and incremental improvement are more likely to welcome that structure than players who want a forgiving, low-friction platformer.

How challenging or repetitive are the stages?

The challenge is part of the appeal, but the volume of stages can also make the experience feel uneven over time. Nintendo Life’s praise for the collection’s scale and IGN’s criticism of repetition and frustration describe two sides of the same design: there is a great deal to play, but quantity alone does not guarantee that every stage will stay enjoyable. (Nintendo Life; IGN)

If you are comparing it with the original releases, pay particular attention to movement and physics. The available reviews raise changes to the original feel as a concern, but do not provide a definitive, platform-by-platform measurement of how closely the controls match each earlier game. Treat fidelity as a point of disagreement, not as a settled claim that the remake is either identical or wholly different.

Is multiplayer better than playing solo?

There is a case for choosing Banana Mania primarily as a local party game. IGN’s review summary specifically found local multiplayer more enjoyable than solo play, while Nintendo describes score and fastest-time competition and online play on the Switch listing. The best mode for you depends on whether you want to tackle stages alone or turn the game into a shared competition; the review evidence does not show that everyone will prefer multiplayer. (IGN; Nintendo Switch listing)

What does Helper Mode change?

GameSpot reports that using Helper Mode disqualifies players from online leaderboard rankings and prevents score saving. If leaderboard competition or keeping scores matters to you, consider that trade-off before relying on the mode. (GameSpot)

Who should consider playing it?

  • Good fit: players who enjoy precise movement, retrying compact obstacle courses, and working through a large collection of stages.
  • Good fit: friends or households looking for local party play alongside solo platforming.
  • Less suitable: players who expect the exact movement and physics of the original releases.
  • Less suitable: players who find repeated attempts frustrating or want every stage to feel consistently fresh.

These recommendations reflect the differences in the 2021 review coverage, rather than firsthand testing. The ESRB rates the game E10+ (Everyone 10+) for Cartoon Violence. (ESRB ratings)
