The best Nintendo Switch game depends on what you want to play: a huge solo adventure, a relaxed island life sim, a couch multiplayer favorite, or a demanding action game. This editorial selection of 30 games prioritizes variety across genres, play styles, challenge, and newcomer appeal—not a universal ranking. Nintendo Life’s reader-rating list is a separate, changeable ranking, while Nintendo’s recommendations are intended to showcase different kinds of experiences. Nintendo Life’s list and Nintendo’s recommendations are useful starting points, but the order below is organized for choosing a game that fits you.

All 30 picks below are presented as Nintendo Switch games. If you plan to play on Switch 2, check the exact title and edition first: Nintendo says compatible physical and digital Switch games work on Switch 2, but some titles may be unsupported or not fully compatible. Some also have free updates or paid upgrades. Nintendo’s Switch 2 compatibility guidance explains the distinction.

The best Nintendo Switch games, by type of player

These picks are grouped by the experience they offer rather than ranked from best to worst. Release editions and availability can differ by region, so confirm the Nintendo Switch listing before buying, particularly when a similarly named Switch 2 Edition exists.

Open-world adventures and exploration

  1. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild — An open-world adventure built around exploration, experimentation, and solving problems with the tools and environment around you. A strong first pick if you want a long solo game that lets you set your own pace.
  2. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom — A sprawling sequel that expands exploration with creative building and problem-solving. Choose it for another substantial Hyrule adventure; newcomers may find Breath of the Wild the simpler place to start.
  3. Pokémon Legends: Arceus — A Pokémon action role-playing game that puts exploration and catching at the center of its loop. It suits players who want a more active, exploratory take on the series.
  4. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Complete Edition — A large, story-led open-world role-playing game for players comfortable with mature themes and a substantial commitment. Check that you are buying the Nintendo Switch Complete Edition, not a listing for another platform.

Platforming and family-friendly play

  1. Super Mario Odyssey — A lively 3D platform adventure with varied worlds and a focus on movement and discovery. Its approachable controls make it an easy recommendation for solo play.
  2. Super Mario Bros. Wonder — A fresh-feeling 2D Mario platformer with inventive level changes and cooperative play. It works well for players who want short stages and the option to play together.
  3. Kirby and the Forgotten Land — An approachable 3D platform adventure with exploration and action. Consider it for younger or less experienced players seeking a gentler entry point; check the local age rating for your household.
  4. Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury — A two-part package combining cooperative 3D platforming with a separate, more open-ended Mario adventure. A good fit for households looking for shared play as well as solo exploration.

Multiplayer and pick-up-and-play favorites

  1. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe — Accessible racing for local multiplayer, with online play also available. It is an especially reliable choice for mixed-skill groups because the basic goal is easy to grasp.
  2. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate — A large crossover fighting game that can serve as a party game for local groups or a competitive solo pursuit. Its depth rewards practice, but casual matches are easy to start.
  3. Animal Crossing: New Horizons — A relaxed island-life game centered on decorating, collecting, and shaping a personal space over time. It is better suited to players who enjoy an unhurried routine than those looking for a tightly directed campaign.
  4. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge — Arcade-style cooperative action with a straightforward beat-’em-up structure. Choose it for short, energetic sessions with friends or family.
  5. Fortnite — A free-to-play online battle royale available on Switch, for players who want ongoing online matches. It includes in-game purchases, and online play depends on an internet connection; check the current Nintendo listing and online-service requirements for your account and region.

Action, combat, and challenge

  1. Metroid Prime Remastered — First-person exploration and action, with interconnected environments to investigate. It is a strong solo pick if you prefer atmosphere and discovery alongside combat.
  2. Hades — An action roguelike that combines repeat runs with story progression. Its run-based structure suits portable sessions, while its combat offers a satisfying challenge for players willing to learn through retries.
  3. Hollow Knight — A challenging 2D action-adventure with expansive interconnected areas. It is best for players who enjoy careful exploration and demanding fights rather than a guided, low-pressure experience.
  4. Monster Hunter Rise — An action game about preparing for and hunting powerful monsters, with cooperative play as a major draw. Expect to learn weapon systems and hunt routines over time.
  5. Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown — Fast 2D action platforming with exploration and combat. A good option if you want responsive movement and a more direct action focus.
  6. Ori and the Will of the Wisps — An atmospheric platform adventure that blends exploration, movement challenges, and action. It fits players looking for a visually expressive solo journey.
  7. NieR:Automata The End of YoRHa Edition — An action role-playing game with story and combat at its core. It is a distinctive choice for players seeking a more unusual, narrative-driven action experience; check the game’s rating and content details before choosing it for younger players.

Strategy and role-playing games

  1. Pikmin 4 — A strategy and exploration game about directing small groups of Pikmin to solve problems and gather resources. Its structured missions make it a good fit for players who enjoy planning without committing to a traditional role-playing campaign.
  2. Fire Emblem: Three Houses — A tactical role-playing game that pairs turn-based battles with character relationships and story choices. Choose it if you want strategic combat and a long-form narrative.
  3. Persona 5 Royal — A stylish, story-heavy role-playing game that combines turn-based combat with daily-life and social systems. It is a substantial solo commitment, best for players who want characters and plot as much as battles.
  4. Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition — A large-scale role-playing adventure with an expansive world and a long story. It is a natural fit for players who want a lengthy solo journey.
  5. Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition — Science-fiction role-playing focused on exploration and a broad world. Verify the exact Nintendo Switch edition when purchasing, since the Definitive Edition name matters.
  6. Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age — A traditional turn-based role-playing adventure with a clear central journey. A dependable choice for players who want a classic party-based RPG structure.
  7. Unicorn Overlord — A tactical role-playing game for players who enjoy arranging units and thinking through battles. It offers a strategy-first alternative to more action-led RPGs.
  8. The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy — A tactical role-playing game with visual-novel elements, suited to players who want substantial story alongside strategic decisions. Check the Switch edition and regional listing before buying.
  9. Luigi’s Mansion 3 — A puzzle-focused action adventure built around exploring a hotel and solving environmental challenges. It offers a lighter alternative to combat-heavy adventures and supports cooperative play.

Which is best, Breath of the Wild or Tears of the Kingdom?

Pick Breath of the Wild if you want the original open-world experience and a more straightforward starting point. Choose Tears of the Kingdom if you have already explored that world and want a sequel emphasizing creative construction and expanded exploration. The better choice depends on whether you want an introduction or a follow-up, not on a universal ranking.

Are sales a useful guide to which games are best?

Sales show how many copies a game has sold, not whether it is right for a particular player. Nintendo reported these worldwide life-to-date software sales units as of June 30, 2026; Nintendo says the figures include downloadable versions and quantities bundled with hardware or other products. They are popularity context, not a quality score.

What should you check before buying for Switch 2?

A Nintendo Switch game can be playable on Switch 2 without being a Switch 2 Edition. Nintendo says compatible physical and digital Switch software runs on Switch 2, while also warning that some games are unsupported or not fully compatible; some titles have a free update or paid upgrade. Check the specific game’s Nintendo listing and compatibility status rather than assuming that a Switch 2 Edition is interchangeable with the Switch version. For example, the catalog lists Hades II as a Switch 2 Edition; it is not the same listing as the original Hades for Nintendo Switch. Check Nintendo’s compatibility guidance and confirm the edition shown by the retailer.
