BattleShip is an unofficial, open-source native PC port of Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 64. It targets Windows, Linux and macOS, supports both the US NTSC-U v1.0 and Japanese v1.0 releases, and requires you to provide a matching ROM. Its “isn’t AI slop” distinction comes from its technical foundation: a substantial matching decompilation, native libraries and contributions from people testing, fixing and extending the project.
What BattleShip actually is
BattleShip is not an official Nintendo release, remake or emulator preset. It rebuilds the N64 game as a native desktop application using the VetriTheRetri/ssb-decomp-re matching decompilation. The port uses libultraship for PC-native rendering, audio and input, while Torch extracts game assets from a ROM during the build process.

The supported desktop targets listed by the project are Windows, Linux and macOS. Related documentation describes Android support as planned or in progress rather than a finished release. Linux support means the project is relevant to Steam Deck owners, but the available documentation does not establish a dedicated Steam Deck build, verified controls profile or guaranteed plug-and-play installation.
Why the project says it is not “AI slop”
The phrase refers to provenance, not to a formal audit of every line of code. The project began with a real reverse-engineering and decompilation effort, then added native-platform code and community work. Its project page says, “As of now, this is no longer a pure AI project.”

That distinction matters because a generated code dump would not by itself provide a reproducible game build, a verified ROM-matching process or a community-maintained port. The documentation credits practical contributions such as playtesting, bug fixes, modding knowledge and feature suggestions. AI may have been involved at an earlier stage, but the current project is presented as a collaborative open-source effort built on established technical work.
How the port is built
A matching decompilation
The underlying decompilation aims to reproduce the original program byte for byte when compared with a user-supplied baserom. The repository does not include that baserom. This approach keeps the project reproducible without distributing Nintendo’s original executable or asset dump.

Native libraries and build-time extraction
libultraship replaces the N64 platform layer for rendering, sound and controls on desktop systems. Torch reads the user’s ROM during the build process and extracts the assets needed by the native build. In practical terms, the project is neither a conventional emulator nor a prepacked PC remake: it is a native port assembled from decompiled code and locally supplied game data.

What you need before building
- A legally owned copy of a supported release.
- A US NTSC-U v1.0 dump (internal code
NALE) or the Japanese v1.0 release, Nintendo All-Star! Dairantou Smash Brothers (internal codeNALJ). - A ROM whose checksum matches the project’s published SHA-1 and MD5 values.
- A development environment appropriate to Windows, Linux or macOS, following the project’s current build documentation.
A different revision, region or altered dump will not work simply because it is also a copy of Smash 64. The checksum requirement is part of the build’s identity check, so obtaining the correct release is the first troubleshooting step.

Neither the repository nor the described documentation indicates that every regional revision is supported. Treat the two listed v1.0 releases as the compatibility list rather than assuming later revisions or other regional dumps will be accepted.

- Confirm that your ROM is one of the two listed v1.0 releases.
- Calculate its SHA-1 and MD5 values and compare them with the project’s published hashes.
- Install the platform tools and dependencies specified in the current BattleShip documentation.
- Point the build process at your own ROM so Torch can extract assets.
- Build the native application for Windows, Linux or macOS.
- If the build rejects the ROM, recheck the region, revision and checksums before changing code or dependencies.
The project documentation says the repository includes no Nintendo code, textures, audio, models, text, ROM data or other copyrighted assets. That is why the user-supplied ROM is a requirement rather than an optional download.

Is there an official Nintendo PC version?
No official Nintendo PC release is identified here. BattleShip is an open-source fan project, and its legality and distribution model depend on users supplying game data they legally own. Downloading a packaged copy that includes Nintendo’s ROM or extracted assets would not be the same as building the project as documented.
Who should try it?
BattleShip is aimed at players who want native desktop controls, developers interested in decompilation and modding, and researchers who need hitbox visualization or configurable input. It is less suitable for anyone looking for an officially supported PC product, a guaranteed one-click installer or compatibility with an arbitrary Smash 64 ROM.
