Equip an Amber at a Lantern: interact with the Lantern, choose the Amber equipment option, and select the Amber you want to slot. If that option is missing, William may not yet have reached the progression threshold that unlocks an Amber slot. The number of available slots increases as he levels, and Catalyst Clots in your inventory can help you reach the next level threshold sooner.
How to equip an Amber
- Find and interact with a Lantern.
- Look for the Amber equipment option in the Lantern menu.
- Select the Amber you want to use and confirm the slot.
The official Xbox Wire guide summarizes the process as: “Slot them in when you visit a lantern.” Lanterns also provide the usual rest, level-up and travel functions, so the Amber option may appear alongside those activities once the relevant progression requirement is met.

If the Amber option is not visible
Having an Amber in your collection does not necessarily mean you can equip it immediately. A Steam player described finding four Ambers but seeing only rest, level-up and travel at several Lanterns. That situation indicates a progression lock rather than a missing collectible. Continue leveling William until an Amber slot is granted, then check a Lantern again.

The available sources do not establish a universal button sequence or a precise level-by-level slot table. Menu labels and the number of slots should therefore be treated as progression-dependent rather than tied to a specific Lantern location.

What Ambers change in combat
Ambers are build modifiers. Some provide straightforward power increases, while others alter the way encounters work. Choosing one should start with the behavior you want to change and then account for its cost or limitation.

This makes Amber selection a playstyle decision rather than a simple rarity check. Marksman’s Bane changes defense into ammunition generation, Volatile End adds burst damage to precision attacks, and Butcher’s Carnage replaces Flask-based recovery with healing tied to melee engagement.

How Amber slots unlock
The official guide states that the number of Ambers William can equip increases as he levels. If you are carrying an Amber but cannot slot it, the practical fix is to advance your character progression rather than search for a special Lantern.
Use Catalyst Clots to reach the next threshold
Catalyst Clots from your inventory can push William past the next level threshold. Use them when you are close to the level needed for another Amber slot, then return to a Lantern and check the equipment menu. The sources do not specify a fixed Catalyst Clot cost or a complete level-to-slot chart, so avoid assuming that every threshold uses the same amount.

Finding more Ambers and upgrading them
Many Ambers are hidden in optional areas, and the official guide warns that a single playthrough is unlikely to reveal every one. PowerPyx’s collectible guide, dated October 13, 2026, lists 28 unique Ambers across 55 collectible locations.
Duplicate pickups and level upgrades
Duplicates are not simply redundant. According to the same guide, 15 Ambers can be upgraded to level 3 by collecting duplicate pickups. If you are targeting a stronger version of a particular Amber, revisit optional areas and collect its additional copies rather than stopping after the first discovery.

Ambersmith achievement
For the Ambersmith achievement, you need one of each of the 28 unique Ambers. The achievement requirement is distinct from upgrading: duplicates can improve eligible Ambers, but the collection goal is satisfied by obtaining every unique entry once.

A practical setup checklist
- Confirm that the Amber is in your collection.
- Visit a Lantern after reaching the required progression threshold.
- Use Catalyst Clots if you are just short of the next level.
- Pick an Amber whose effect matches your main source of damage or recovery.
- Read the limitation before confirming the slot, especially when using Butcher’s Carnage.
- Keep checking optional areas if you want all 28 unique Ambers or level-3 upgrades.
Why a Lantern may show only rest, level-up and travel
Those menu options do not prove that the Lantern is defective or that the Amber is lost. The most likely explanation supported by the available guidance is that the Amber slot has not unlocked for William yet. Level up, apply Catalyst Clots when appropriate, and revisit the Lantern. Once the threshold is met, the Amber equipment entry should become available; the exact unlock level is not documented in the cited guides.
