Yes—Super Robot Wars Y is built around the pleasure of watching characters and mecha from different anime worlds collide in one new story. The “kid’s giant robo fanfiction” description captures that exuberant crossover fantasy, but misses the game’s other half: it is a grid-based tactical RPG about commanding a squad, improving favorite units, and deciding how to use them in battle.
What the “giant robo fanfiction” comparison gets right
Super Robot Wars Y brings pilots and mecha from multiple anime properties together to face shared enemies. Its appeal is not just spotting familiar machines: characters from separate series meet, talk, and take part in a crossover narrative. Bandai Namco’s launch announcement named base-game series such as Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury Season 1, Code Geass: Lelouch of the Re;surrection, Mobile Suit Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz, SSSS.DYNAZENON, Getter Robo Arc, Macross Delta, and Godzilla Singular Point (Bandai Namco Entertainment America, August 28, 2025).
That mix makes the fanfiction comparison understandable: the game creates a shared stage for characters who normally belong to different stories. But it is an analogy for the crossover’s appeal, not a literal description of the format. Missions, squad management, and tactical combat give the premise a structured game system rather than leaving it as a parade of cameos.
How the story and tactical missions fit together
The game alternates narrative-adventure sections with grid-based simulation battles. In combat, players command a squad, use units’ weapons and abilities, and work through mission objectives. Between missions, they can spend earned credits and resources to upgrade units and train pilots. That investment is central to the series’ design, as producer Kota Toma put it: “The core experience of Super Robot Wars lies in strategically investing training resources into your favorite units and watching them excel on the battlefield.” (Bandai Namco Europe, September 7, 2025.)
#1 Best Overall
- Tactical role-playing game with crossover mecha franchises
- Extensive unit customization and upgrades
- Story-driven missions with anime-style battles
- Large list of iconic robots and pilots
- Turn-based grid battle for strategy fans
The result is a combination of character-driven crossover scenes and a progression loop: pick the units you care about, develop their capabilities, and take them into missions. The story supplies the interactions; tactical play gives those favorites a practical role in your squad.
Assist Link gives supporting characters a role in combat
Not every character who supports the squad is a battlefield pilot. With Assist Link, supporting characters can use Assist Commands to help during missions. Official materials describe effects including restoring HP or EN and increasing attack power. Assist crew members also rank up through participation and use, strengthening their effects over time (Bandai Namco Entertainment America; Bandai Namco Europe).

- Asian version all in English. Works on all switch console. Need asian account to download dlc included
This makes squad development broader than upgrading combat units alone: support characters also have a progression path and can affect how a mission plays out.
Is it approachable if you have not watched every series?
MeriStation reviewer Miguel Olmedo Morell describes the main story as self-contained enough for newcomers, while noting that the many connections among its anime series can make the wider narrative web difficult to follow. In practice, that means you can follow the central plot without knowing every source work, but familiarity with the crossovers may add context to character appearances and interactions (MeriStation, October 4, 2025).
The same review praises the character interactions, fidelity to the source material, and battle animations. Olmedo Morell also criticizes the slow pace, lengthy dialogue, and an interface he finds overwhelming; he says combat may feel too easy outside Expert difficulty. Those are one reviewer’s assessments, not a guarantee of how every player will experience the game.
