Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before changing files, record:
- The exact program named in the error, such as Fritz or another ChessBase-family application.
- Whether the error appears at startup, after an update, after reinstalling, or after antivirus activity.
- The complete error wording and any path shown.
- Whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit, and whether the application itself is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Whether the installation came from ChessBase, DVD media, or Steam.
- Whether
SView3.dllexists in the program’s installation folder, possibly with different capitalization.

sview3.dll is a legitimate application library associated with the SView library from ChessBase GmbH. It is not a Windows system DLL. sview3.dll normally belongs in the affected ChessBase or Fritz installation folder, not in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.
The safest first repair is to repair or reinstall the affected program using its official installer. Do not start by downloading an isolated DLL.

What the error message tells you
Windows may display messages such as:
- “The program can’t start because sview3.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because sview3.dll was not found.”
- “There was a problem starting sview3.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “Error loading sview3.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “sview3.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
- An “entry point not found” message naming
sview3.dll.
These messages do not all mean the same thing.
If the message says the file is missing or was not found, check the application folder and antivirus history first. If it says “specified module could not be found,” SView3.dll may be present while another library that it needs is missing. If it says “not designed to run on Windows” or reports an entry point, suspect corruption, mixed versions, or the wrong architecture.
Fix 1: Restart Windows and inspect the application folder
A restart is worthwhile after an interrupted update or installer operation.
#1 Best Overall
- Save your work and select Start → Power → Restart.
- Start the ChessBase or Fritz program again.
- If the error remains, right-click the program’s shortcut and select Open file location.
- Look for
SView3.dllorsview3.dllin the folder containing the program executable. - If Windows finds the file elsewhere, do not copy it into the application folder yet. A file from another product or release may be incompatible.
Windows file names are generally case-insensitive, so SView3.dll and sview3.dll normally refer to the same file. The important details are the location, product release, architecture, and matching companion files.
If the DLL is absent, proceed directly to an official repair or reinstall. If it is present, continue with the dependency and version checks below.
Fix 2: Repair or reinstall ChessBase or Fritz
ChessBase documentation lists SView3.dll among the files installed with Fritz and ChessBase-family programs. It appears in the program directory alongside files including ChessProgram, ChessRes, FrameRes, Textures3, and ChessBaseAdminTool. Public documentation confirms multiple Fritz and ChessBase releases, but it does not establish a complete list of every product that ships this file.
Recommended Free Tools
Use the ChessBase account installer
For a purchased installation:
- Close Fritz, ChessBase, and any related updater.
- Open the ChessBase account page in your browser.
- Sign in with the account used to purchase or register the product.
- Open My Downloads.
- Locate the exact product and release.
- Download the installer matching your Windows architecture.
- Right-click the downloaded installer and select Run as administrator.
- Choose the repair or reinstall option if offered. Otherwise, complete the installation over the existing product.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the program from its normal shortcut.
Do not use an installer for a different Fritz or ChessBase release. Do not mix a DLL from one product version with executables from another.
If the program opens afterward, use its built-in updater where available. In Fritz, the documented path is File → Activation → Program update. Apply the update, restart the program, and test again.
A failed update can leave executable and DLL versions out of sync. If an “entry point not found” error began immediately after an update, uninstalling and reinstalling the affected product may be necessary. Back up personal chess databases before uninstalling.
If the installation came from DVD media
Use the original disc only if it contains the correct product and release. Copying one DLL from the disc may leave other files at incompatible versions.
Instead:
- Insert the DVD.
- Open This PC in File Explorer.
- Open the DVD drive.
- Run the product setup program as administrator.
- Select repair or reinstall.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
- Apply the product’s official update after the base installation works.
If the disc installer is old and the program immediately requires an update, obtain the current installer from the registered ChessBase account when possible.

If the installation came from Steam
Use Steam’s file verification rather than downloading replacement DLLs:
- Open Steam.
- Select Library.
- Right-click the affected game.
- Select Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the process to finish.
- Start the game again.
Steam should replace missing or damaged files belonging to that installation. If verification repeatedly reports changes, check the disk, antivirus history, and Steam library permissions.
Fix 3: Check whether a Microsoft runtime dependency is missing
A present SView3.dll can still fail when one of its imported libraries is absent. A public Fritz/Wine launch record identifies mfc140u.dll as a dependency for one build of SView3.dll; that evidence applies to that build and is not an official dependency list for every ChessBase release.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Read the dialog carefully. It may name a Microsoft runtime instead, including:
mfc140u.dllmsvcp140.dllvcruntime140.dll
If one of these is named, install or repair the official Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable:
- Open Microsoft’s Visual C++ Redistributable downloads page.
- Download the package matching the application architecture.
- Run the installer.
- Select Repair if the package is already installed. Otherwise select Install.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the ChessBase or Fritz program.
A 32-bit program on 64-bit Windows still requires the x86 redistributable. A 64-bit application requires the x64 package. If you cannot identify the application architecture, check the program’s documentation or installer details rather than assuming that 64-bit Windows means the program is 64-bit.
For an older ChessBase product or an installer that explicitly requires Visual Studio 2015 components, use Microsoft’s official Visual C++ 2015 package. Keep older Visual C++ redistributables installed when other applications depend on them. Newer packages do not automatically replace every older runtime.
Fix 4: Review antivirus quarantine
Security software may have removed or quarantined an application-local DLL during an update or after a repair.
Windows Security
- Open Start → Settings.
- Select Privacy & security → Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review entries from the time the problem began.
- Expand any entry associated with the ChessBase or Fritz installation.
- Confirm the file path and detection details before taking action.
Prefer reinstalling the file from the official ChessBase installer or Steam. Restore a quarantined file only when its origin is trusted, the installation is intact, and the detection has been investigated. Do not create a broad antivirus exclusion for the entire System32 folder or for arbitrary DLL download sites locations.
After restoring or reinstalling the program, run another security scan and test the application. If the file is quarantined again, stop restoring it and contact ChessBase support or your security administrator with the detection name and full path.
Fix 5: Resolve mixed versions and architecture errors
A DLL copied from another Fritz release, another ChessBase product, or an unrelated computer can produce errors even when the file name is correct.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCommon clues include:
- “Not designed to run on Windows”
- Initialization failure
- Entry-point errors
- The program worked before an update but not afterward
- The program folder contains files with noticeably different modification dates
- A 32-bit and 64-bit installation were mixed
Use the installer supplied for the exact product and release. Do not treat one catalogued public build reported as version 5.40.0.0 and 32-bit as a universal version for all ChessBase software.
To check Windows architecture:
- Open Start → Settings → System → About.
- Read System type under device specifications.
- Check the application’s installer or product documentation for the program architecture.
- Reinstall using the matching ChessBase package.
If only one program fails, an application repair is more likely to help than changing Windows system files.
Fix 6: Do not copy the DLL to System32 or use regsvr32
SView3.dll is an application-local component. Copying it into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 can create version conflicts and does not repair the program’s other files or dependencies.
regsvr32 is also generally irrelevant here. Microsoft documents it for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. There is no authoritative evidence that SView3.dll is a self-registering COM or ActiveX library.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteDo not run:
regsvr32 sview3.dll
as a routine fix. It will not restore a missing file, repair a damaged ChessBase installation, or install a missing Visual C++ runtime.
Fix 7: Repair Windows only when other programs also fail
Use Windows repair commands when the failure is part of a wider problem, such as several unrelated applications failing, damaged Windows components, or system errors after storage trouble. These commands will not normally recreate a missing third-party SView3.dll in a ChessBase program folder.
- Open Start and type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Run DISM first:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Run System File Checker:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected program.
Microsoft recommends DISM before SFC. If SFC reports that it repaired files, restart and test again. If it reports that it could not repair everything, repeat the application reinstall rather than placing a third-party DLL into a Windows folder.
When repeated manual scans make it difficult to identify which Windows components changed, Outbyte PC Repair can provide a free scan showing reported problems; repairs are performed by the full version, and reinstalling ChessBase or Fritz remains the definitive fix for a missing application DLL.
Consider System Restore
If several programs broke immediately after a system change:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter
rstrui.exeand press Enter. - Select Next.
- Choose a restore point from before the failure.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next → Finish.
System Restore can revert system files, registry settings, and installed programs without normally affecting personal files. It does not replace a proper ChessBase reinstall and should not be the first choice when only one application is affected.

sview3.dll is not a Windows device driver. Updating a graphics or chipset driver is not a direct replacement for repairing ChessBase. Consider it only when other programs show display failures, Windows reports device errors, or the problem began with a wider graphics issue.
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters and any relevant device category.
- Right-click the affected device and select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab and record the provider and version.
- Use Windows Update or the hardware manufacturer’s official support channel for a compatible driver.
- Restart Windows and test again.
When hunting through Device Manager for several stale drivers is the problem, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and show reported driver issues; driver installation is handled by the full version, and it is not a substitute for reinstalling the ChessBase product that owns SView3.dll.

If the repair still fails
Collect these details before contacting ChessBase support:
- Product name and exact release
- Installer source: ChessBase account, DVD, or Steam
- Windows edition and version
- Windows and application architecture
- Full error text
- Full path shown in the error
- Whether
SView3.dllexists in the program folder - Any dependency named by the dialog
- Antivirus detection and quarantine details
- Whether the issue began after an update or reinstall
- Results of the official repair, Steam verification, and runtime repair
If repeated updates fail, uninstall and reinstall the affected program from its official source after backing up personal databases. Keep the program’s files together and avoid replacing individual DLLs from another installation.
FAQ
Is sview3.dll part of Windows?
No. It is an application library associated with ChessBase’s SView component and should normally remain in the ChessBase or Fritz installation directory.

Which products install it?
Public Fritz and ChessBase documentation confirms the file in multiple releases, but there is no complete public product list. Identify the exact program named in the error and repair that installation.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Is a missing sview3.dll always caused by the file being deleted?
No. The file may be present while a dependency is missing. “The specified module could not be found” can refer to a library required by SView3.dll.
Should I download sview3.dll from a DLL website?
No. An arbitrary download may contain malware, belong to the wrong release, use the wrong architecture, or leave the damaged installation unresolved. Use the official ChessBase installer, original media, or Steam verification.
Do I need both x86 and x64 Visual C++ packages?
Install the architecture required by the application. A 32-bit ChessBase program needs x86 even on 64-bit Windows. Do not remove older redistributables that other programs may still require.
Why did the error appear after an update?
An interrupted update can leave program files mismatched or incomplete. Repair or reinstall the exact product, then run its official program update.
Will DISM or SFC restore SView3.dll?
Normally no. DISM and SFC repair protected Windows components. They do not normally recreate a third-party DLL missing from an application folder.
What if only this ChessBase program fails?
That points more strongly to a damaged or incomplete application installation than to general Windows corruption. Reinstall the affected product first.
