fileio.dll is not one universal Windows component. It is an application DLL name used by unrelated programs, so the correct repair depends on which program reports the error and where the file is expected to be.
Before changing Windows, record:
- The application or game that will not start
- The complete error text
- The executable path shown in the message or shortcut
- The full path of
fileio.dll, if Windows displays one - Whether the problem began after an update, reinstall, disk cleanup, antivirus action, or Windows upgrade
- Whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit
Do not begin by downloading a file with the same name. A GameMaker copy, a Pinnacle Studio copy, and a Thermo MSFileReader copy are not interchangeable.

Fix fileio.dll in the owning application
This is the most likely solution for messages such as:
Recommended Free Tools
- “This application failed to start because fileio.dll was not found.”
- “The program can’t start because fileio.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because fileio.dll was not found.”
- “The file ‘fileio.dll’ could not be loaded or is corrupt.”
The wording can vary between Windows versions and applications. The important clue is the program that shows the dialog.

1. Use the application’s repair or file-verification feature
First check whether the program has a built-in repair option or launcher verification command.
- Close the affected application.
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Select the application.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
If there is no Repair button, open the application’s own launcher or setup program and look for Repair, Verify files, Scan and repair, or Check installation. For a game, use file verification only in the launcher that owns that game.
If the application starts normally afterward, the missing or damaged copy has been restored. If the repair reports that files are missing but cannot replace them, continue with a complete reinstall.

2. Reinstall from the publisher’s installer
Use the original media, the publisher’s official download, or the application’s authenticated launcher. Do not use a DLL download site.
- Back up application projects, saved games, templates, or license information.
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select Uninstall and complete the wizard.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the official installer as an administrator. Right-click the installer and choose Run as administrator.
- Select the correct optional runtime or component packages.
- Start the application and test the operation that previously failed.
A proper reinstall places the DLL beside the application or inside its documented runtime folder. It does not normally require copying the file into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.
If the same error returns immediately, note the application’s installation path and check whether antivirus software removed the file during setup.
Check antivirus quarantine before reinstalling again
Security software can remove or block an application DLL. This is especially plausible when the problem began immediately after an antivirus scan, application update, or runtime installation.
In Microsoft Defender:
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Expand the detection associated with the application.
- Check the detected file path, publisher, and action.
- Use Restore only if the file belongs to the trusted application installer and the application itself is legitimate.
Do not permanently disable antivirus protection to make an unknown DLL load. If the file is restored and is removed again, reinstall the application from its official source and contact the publisher or security-software vendor with the detection details.
Also check whether Windows controlled-folder policies or company security policies blocked the installer. On a managed computer, an administrator may need to approve the application.
Match the product case
Because several unrelated products use this filename, the following cases need different installers and runtime packages.
GameMaker
GameMaker packages can contain FileIO.dll and FileIO.gmplugin. Its Windows runtimes are stored below a GameMaker runtime cache rather than being a general Windows DLL.
If GameMaker cannot install a runtime or fails during a build:
- Close GameMaker.
- Check Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection history for a blocked GameMaker file.
- Confirm that your Windows account can write to the GameMaker installation and runtime folders.
- Reopen GameMaker as an administrator once to test whether permissions are involved.
- Open GameMaker’s runtime management area and reinstall the required runtime module.
- If that fails, uninstall GameMaker, restart Windows, and reinstall it from the official GameMaker installer.
- Rebuild the project and check whether the error now names a different missing component.
If the program works under a new Windows user profile, the original profile may have damaged permissions or corrupted GameMaker settings. A new profile diagnoses that condition, but it is not a replacement for repairing the application installation.
Thermo MSFileReader
Thermo MSFileReader installs application components that can include fileio.dll, fregistry.dll, and XRawFile components. It is available in separate 32-bit and 64-bit installations.
Determine the architecture of the scientific application that loads MSFileReader:
- Check the application documentation or contact its administrator.
- Check whether the application is explicitly identified as x86 or x64.
- Remove an incorrect or incomplete MSFileReader installation through Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Install the MSFileReader package required by the consuming application.
- Make sure the architecture matches. A 32-bit application generally needs the 32-bit component, while a 64-bit application needs the 64-bit component.
- Restart the scientific application and repeat the import or analysis.
An older 32-bit MSFileReader installation can interfere with a 64-bit installation. Do not solve this by copying fileio.dll from another machine or from a different Thermo product.
Pinnacle Studio and other legacy software
Pinnacle Studio 16 used an application-local fileio.dll. Older multimedia, scientific, medical-imaging, Scilab, and Macromedia Director software can also use the same filename for unrelated purposes.
For legacy software:
- Uninstall the damaged application only after saving projects and license details.
- Use the original product media or the publisher’s archived installation package.
- Install all documented patches for that product.
- Right-click the main executable, choose Properties, open Compatibility, and use compatibility settings only if the publisher recommends them.
- Test the program before adding files from another installation.
An old application may not be fully compatible with the current Windows release. If the official installer cannot complete, use a supported version of the product or contact its publisher rather than substituting a similarly named DLL.
Understand “specified module could not be found”
“The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that fileio.dll itself is absent. Windows may have found fileio.dll but failed to load a dependency that it requires.

This can happen when:
- The application’s runtime package is incomplete
- The wrong x86 or x64 build was installed
- A Microsoft Visual C++ runtime is missing
- Another vendor DLL was quarantined
- The DLL was copied without the rest of the application
Check the folder containing fileio.dll. If the file exists beside the application executable but the error remains, reinstall the complete application or its documented runtime package. Dependency inspection with a reputable diagnostic tool can identify the missing imported module; record that result before contacting the publisher.
Install a Visual C++ runtime only when required
Do not assume Visual C++ is the owner of fileio.dll. Install a Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable only when the application documentation, installer, or dependency analysis identifies it as required.
When it is required:
- Identify whether the application is x86 or x64.
- Download the matching package from Microsoft’s latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable page.
- Run the installer.
- Choose Repair if that option appears.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
Microsoft provides vc_redist.x86.exe, vc_redist.x64.exe, and vc_redist.arm64.exe. Older redistributable versions may remain installed side by side because different applications can require different runtime generations.
Repair Windows components conditionally
Windows repair commands will not normally restore a third-party application DLL. Use them when other Windows components are also failing, Windows Update is damaged, or the application error began with broader system corruption.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFirst install pending updates:
- Open Start > Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart when prompted.
Then repair the Windows component store:
- Open Start.
- Search for Command Prompt.
- Right-click it and choose Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows and test the application.
Microsoft explains these commands in its System File Checker repair instructions. DISM repairs the Windows image, while SFC checks protected Windows files. If both complete successfully but the same application still reports fileio.dll, repair or reinstall the owning application instead.
Repeatedly running SFC and DISM without identifying what changed usually adds no value. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for issues and show what needs attention, while its repair actions require the full version; it is optional, and reinstalling the application remains the definitive fix when that application owns fileio.dll.
Update drivers only when the error points to them
A fileio.dll message is usually an application-file problem, not a driver problem. Consider drivers only if the application also crashes during video capture, playback, imaging, hardware access, or another operation that clearly involves a device.
Use Windows Update first:
- Open Start > Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Advanced options > Optional updates.
- Expand Driver updates, if present.
- Install the driver intended for your hardware.
- Restart Windows.
You can also inspect Device Manager:
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters, Cameras, or Imaging devices.
- Right-click the device and choose Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart and retest.
Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify which versions need attention, while driver installation through the full version is optional; do not treat a driver update as a substitute for reinstalling the application that installed fileio.dll.

Do not register fileio.dll simply because it has a .dll extension. regsvr32 is intended for self-registering COM or ActiveX libraries that provide a DllRegisterServer entry point.
A failed command such as:
regsvr32 fileio.dll
does not prove that the file is missing. It may mean that the DLL is not a self-registering component, that the wrong architecture of regsvr32 was used, or that a dependency is unavailable. Microsoft documents the tool and its limitations in its regsvr32 troubleshooting guidance.
Use the application installer’s repair process unless the software publisher specifically instructs you to register the file.
Avoid random DLL downloads
Do not download fileio.dll from an unverified DLL library, rename another DLL, or copy a file into System32, SysWOW64, or the application folder. The risks include malware, the wrong publisher’s file, the wrong architecture, and a version that still lacks its dependencies.

Use System Restore only as a fallback
If the error began immediately after a system-wide change and application repair did not help, System Restore can roll back system configuration and installed programs while preserving personal files.
- Press Win+R.
- Enter:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select a restore point from before the problem began.
- Select Scan for affected programs.
- Review the changes.
- Confirm the restore only if the result is acceptable.
System Restore is not the normal fix for an application-local missing DLL. Microsoft describes the process in its System Restore instructions.
FAQ
Is fileio.dll a Windows system file?
It is not verified as a standard Microsoft DLL installed in System32 or SysWOW64. The same filename is used by multiple unrelated applications.
Can I copy fileio.dll from another computer?
No. The other computer may have a different product, version, architecture, or dependency set. Reinstall the application that owns the file.
Should I install Visual C++ 2015?
Not automatically. Install the architecture-matched Microsoft redistributable only when the application requires it or dependency analysis identifies it.
What if fileio.dll exists but Windows still reports it as missing?
The message may refer to a dependency of fileio.dll. Reinstall the complete application or runtime package, then inspect dependencies if the error continues.
Does regsvr32 fix fileio.dll?
Usually not. Ordinary application libraries do not need registration. Use it only when the publisher explicitly identifies the DLL as a self-registering component.
