In Baldur’s Gate 3, Swashbuckler is a Rogue subclass available at Rogue level 3. It focuses on moving out of melee safely, making Sneak Attacks under specific close-range conditions, and using Dirty Tricks and Panache to disrupt enemies. Its mechanics are the game’s implementation, not a substitute for tabletop D&D rules.
When can you choose Swashbuckler?
You can select Swashbuckler when your Rogue reaches level 3. Larian added the subclass in Patch 8, which introduced one subclass for each of the game’s twelve classes. Larian later described Patch 8 as the game’s final major patch. Official Patch 8 announcement
What does Swashbuckler do at level 3?
Fancy Footwork: move away after a melee attack
After you make a melee attack against a target, that target cannot make opportunity attacks against you for the rest of your turn. This supports a hit-and-move approach without requiring a separate disengage effect. The BG3 wiki reports that the passive can also work when the attack misses, and notes bugs involving enemies with War Caster or Polearm Master; these are reported caveats, not independently verified results. Rakish Audacity: initiative and close-range Sneak Attack
Rakish Audacity provides a +2 initiative bonus. It also lets you use Sneak Attack in melee without Advantage if you are within 1.5 m (5 ft) of the target and do not have Disadvantage. The proximity and no-Disadvantage conditions matter: this does not make every melee attack a Sneak Attack.

Dirty Tricks: three Bonus Action options
- Flick o’ the Wrist: may Disarm the target.
- Sand Toss: may Blind the target.
- Vicious Mockery: gives the target Disadvantage on its next attack roll.
The subclass page lists each Dirty Trick as a Bonus Action. BG3 wiki: Swashbuckler
How does Panache work at level 9?
Panache is an Action available to a Swashbuckler at level 9. It targets a humanoid within 18 m (60 ft) and pits your Persuasion check against the target’s Insight. If the target fails, the result depends on whether it is an enemy:

- Other target: becomes Charmed.
The listed duration is 10 turns. Panache cannot target beasts, monstrosities, plants, undead, oozes, constructs, or elementals. The BG3 wiki also reports that on higher difficulty modes a target may accuse the caster of enchanting them, notes a condition-removal caveat, and records bugs involving War Caster and Polearm Master. Treat these as wiki-reported caveats rather than independently confirmed behavior. BG3 wiki: Panache
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to think about the subclass
Swashbuckler’s mechanics favor three practical dimensions: Fancy Footwork links an attack to safer movement away from that target; Rakish Audacity supports melee Sneak Attacks when its precise conditions are met and improves initiative; Panache adds a contested-check control option with target limits. These features describe what the subclass does, but they do not establish a numerical ranking, damage advantage, or best build compared with other Rogues.
