swi32.dll is an old third-party 32-bit component called the Summus Wavelet Image Compressor DLL, not a normal Windows file. The safest fix is to identify the application requesting it, then repair or reinstall that application from its original trusted installer instead of downloading the DLL separately.
What this file actually does
swi32.dll is a native image-compression library developed by Summus, Ltd. It handles Summus Wavelet Image compression and decompression for software that included it.

Available evidence identifies the known Summus implementation as Win32/x86, meaning it is a 32-bit DLL. It is not part of Windows, Microsoft Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET. A clean Windows installation normally will not contain it in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.

These messages do not all mean the same thing. A missing-file message usually means the application cannot find the DLL. “The specified module could not be found” can also mean that a dependency used by swi32.dll is missing. An entry-point error usually indicates that the wrong version was supplied. The “not designed to run on Windows” message can indicate corruption, an incompatible architecture, or a missing dependency.
Causes and symptoms at a glance
| Symptom or situation | Most likely cause | Best response |
|---|---|---|
| The error began after uninstalling or cleaning old software | The application DLL was removed | Repair or reinstall the parent application |
| The file disappeared during installation | Antivirus quarantine or incomplete setup | Check Protection history, then rerun the trusted installer |
| The file exists beside the program but still fails | Missing dependency, corruption, or wrong version | Reinstall the complete application and avoid mixing DLLs |
| “Entry point not found” appears | DLL from a different release | Restore the exact file supplied with that application |
| A 64-bit program reports the error | Architecture mismatch is possible | Confirm whether the application is 32-bit and use its matching files |
| The message appears during Windows startup | An old startup item or scheduled task still launches the program | Identify the startup entry and repair or remove the old application |
| SFC does not restore the file | swi32.dll is not a protected Windows component |

Fix 1: Identify the application that needs swi32.dll
Before downloading or copying anything, find out which program is producing the error.
Check the error window
Read the title bar and the text around the error. If the message appears while opening a document, image, or office file, the application currently being used is the first suspect.
If the error appears immediately after signing in:
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Look for old Corel, WordPerfect, graphics, scanning, document, or media software.
- Note the application name and its startup status.
- Right-click a suspicious entry and select Open file location, when available.
Do not delete the DLL or startup entry yet. First record the folder and executable name.
Inspect the shortcut
If you start the program from a shortcut:
- Right-click the shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Read the path in the Target box.
- Select Open File Location if the button is available.
- Look for the program executable and any nearby
swi32.dllfile.
A DLL normally belongs beside the executable that loads it or in a documented subfolder of that application. The containing folder is more useful than the filename alone.
Search the computer
- Press Windows key + E.
- Select This PC.
- Search for
swi32.dll. - Write down every folder containing a copy.
- For each copy, inspect the nearby executable and application folder.
Do not copy one result over another. Multiple historical applications may each require a different build, and replacing one application’s private DLL with another can create a version mismatch.
Check Event Viewer
If the program name is still unclear:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
eventvwr.msc. - Press Enter.
- Open Windows Logs → Application.
- Select errors recorded at the time of the failure.
- Look for the faulting application name and path.
Also check Task Scheduler if the message appears without you opening a program:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open Start and search for Task Scheduler.
- Open Task Scheduler Library.
- Review recently triggered tasks and tasks associated with old software.
- Do not disable a task unless you recognize the program it launches.
Fix 2: Repair or reinstall the original application
This is the most likely solution because swi32.dll belongs to the application that installed it.
Use Windows repair
Some older programs expose a repair option through Installed apps:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps → Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
If there is no Repair button, open Control Panel:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Select the affected program.
- Look for Repair, Change, or Modify.
- Choose the repair option and complete the wizard.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
The wording varies between installers. Choose repair rather than removal when the option is available.
Reinstall from trusted media
If repair is unavailable or fails:
- Back up the application’s documents and custom settings.
- Locate the original licensed installation media or the software publisher’s official installer.
- Disconnect from unofficial DLL archives and modified software packages.
- Uninstall the affected program from Settings → Apps → Installed apps or Control Panel → Programs and Features.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the original installer.
- Complete the full installation rather than selecting a minimal component set.
- Restart again.
- Test the program before restoring custom plugins or add-ons.
For old Corel or WordPerfect software, use the installer and updates intended for the exact product release. A newer edition may not provide the same legacy DLL.
If the installer fails, right-click its setup file, select Properties, open the Compatibility tab, and try the compatibility mode recommended for that old application. You can also right-click the installer and choose Run as administrator. Do not use compatibility settings to force a random DLL into Windows.

If reinstalling does not restore the file
Check whether the setup completed successfully. Then:
- Open the application’s installation folder.
- Search the installer’s log files, if it created any.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection → Protection history.
- Check whether the installer or
swi32.dllwas blocked. - Rerun the installer while watching Protection history.
If the installer repeatedly omits the file, the installer may be incomplete, the media may be damaged, or security software may be removing it. Obtain a clean installer from the original publisher or use original installation media. Do not combine files from different product releases.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine safely
An old DLL may be quarantined because it is unsigned, unusual, modified, or bundled with an untrusted installer. Age alone does not prove that swi32.dll is malware, but restoring an unsafe file can compromise the computer.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTo inspect Windows Security:
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Open the detection related to
swi32.dllor the affected application. - Record the detected path and action.
- Confirm that the path belongs to the original application.
Restore or allow the file only when all of these are true:
- You recognize the parent application.
- The file is in the application’s expected installation folder.
- The installer came from original media or the software publisher.
- The file was not obtained from a random archive.
- A current security scan does not identify the application or installer as malicious.
When in doubt, leave the item quarantined and reinstall the parent application from a trusted source. That replaces the complete installation rather than returning one isolated file.
Fix 4: Verify the 32-bit and 64-bit arrangement
The documented Summus implementation is x86, or 32-bit. A 32-bit application can run on 64-bit Windows through WOW64, but a 64-bit application cannot load a 32-bit DLL in its process.
To identify the application architecture:
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Select Details.
- Right-click a column heading.
- Select Select columns.
- Enable Platform, if your Windows version provides it.
- Check the affected application while it is running.
You can also inspect the application’s installation location. Older 32-bit applications are commonly installed under C:Program Files (x86), although location alone is not definitive.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Use the copy supplied with the application’s exact release. Do not place an x86 swi32.dll into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 to see whether it works. Those folders have architecture-specific behavior on 64-bit Windows, and global copying can cause unrelated applications to load the wrong file.
If the error says “not designed to run on Windows,” reinstall the complete application first. If it continues, the DLL may be damaged, mismatched, or dependent on another missing library.
Fix 5: Check for a missing dependency
Windows can report that a module is missing even when swi32.dll is visibly present. In that situation, a second DLL required by swi32.dll may be unavailable.
Use this order:
- Confirm that
swi32.dllis in the application’s original folder. - Check that the file was not blocked by antivirus.
- Run the application’s repair option.
- Reinstall the complete application.
- Apply updates intended for that exact application.
- Review the application’s own support documentation for required runtimes.
Do not automatically install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET because a web page lists them as general DLL fixes. There is no evidence that swi32.dll itself is supplied by those Microsoft runtimes. Install a runtime only when the affected application specifically requires it and obtain it from Microsoft or the application publisher.

Fix 6: Run Windows repair commands only for broader system problems
Because swi32.dll is a third-party application file, System File Checker will not normally recreate it. These commands are relevant when Windows itself is damaged, installers fail across multiple programs, or several unrelated applications show system-component errors.

First install pending Windows updates and restart. Then open an elevated Terminal or Command Prompt:
- Open Start.
- Search for Command Prompt.
- Right-click it.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to finish. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows after both commands complete and test the application again.
DISM repairs the Windows component image, while SFC checks protected Windows system files. Neither command is a substitute for reinstalling the program that supplied swi32.dll.
Repeating these commands will not fix an application-specific missing DLL if Windows reports that no integrity violations were found. Return to the original application installer instead.
If you prefer help identifying which Windows components are damaged instead of repeatedly running repair commands and interpreting their output, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for problems; its free scan shows what it finds, while repairs require the full version. Reinstalling the application remains the definitive fix when swi32.dll belongs to that application.
Fix 7: Update the application and relevant drivers
An old application may fail on modern Windows because of compatibility problems rather than because the DLL alone is missing.
First update the application from its publisher:
- Identify the exact product and release.
- Visit the publisher’s official support area.
- Download updates intended for that product.
- Install them over the repaired application.
- Restart Windows and test again.
A graphics, scanner, or imaging application may also depend on a display or device driver. Update drivers only from Windows Update, the computer manufacturer, or the hardware manufacturer:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand categories such as Display adapters, Imaging devices, or Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click the relevant device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart if Windows installs an update.
Do not use Device Manager to replace swi32.dll; it does not manage application-private DLLs. If you are tired of hunting through several hardware vendors and checking which driver is stale, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver issues; its free scan reports findings, while driver installation requires the full version.
Fix 8: Use compatibility settings for very old software
If reinstalling restores swi32.dll but the program still will not start:
- Right-click the application shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
- Choose an older Windows version appropriate to the application.
- Select Run this program as an administrator only if the program requires it.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Start the application.
If the program remains unreliable, use a supported legacy computer or a virtual machine containing the operating system for which the application was designed. Keep the old environment isolated and use the original application media.
Why regsvr32 usually does not apply
Do not run this command merely because a DLL error appears:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →regsvr32 swi32.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration functions such as DllRegisterServer, commonly used by COM or ActiveX components. swi32.dll is an application image-compression library, not a documented COM registration component.
The command may return an error saying that the module was loaded but the DllRegisterServer entry point was not found. That does not mean the DLL is missing, and registering it will not repair the application.
Why random DLL downloads and System32 copying are unsafe
Avoid websites offering an isolated swi32.dll download. The file may contain malware, be the wrong version, use the wrong architecture, or lack dependencies required by the application. Even a genuine file from another release may produce an entry-point error.

Safe sources are:
- The original application’s licensed installation media.
- A verified backup made from that application.
- The software publisher’s official installer or support channel.
- An official update for the exact product version.
When System Restore is appropriate
Use System Restore only when the error began immediately after a known software change and a suitable restore point exists.
- Open Start and search for Create a restore point.
- Open it.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point created before the failure.
- Review the affected programs.
- Start the restore and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore may undo an application change, but it is not guaranteed to restore a third-party DLL. Back up recent documents first.
If files keep disappearing after reinstalling, run a malware scan, check disk health, and investigate whether antivirus or a cleanup utility is removing them.
Frequently asked questions
Is swi32.dll a Windows system file?
No. It is a third-party Summus image-compression DLL that was included with applications. It should not normally be present in a clean Windows installation.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Did Corel WordPerfect install it?
Historical evidence places it in the WordPerfect Office 11 Programs folder. Other Corel-related inventories also mention the file, but it is not safe to assume that every copy came from Corel or WordPerfect.
Is swi32.dll 32-bit or 64-bit?
The publicly documented Summus implementation is 32-bit Win32/x86. Use the copy supplied with the exact application and do not substitute a file from another release.
Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Not automatically. swi32.dll is not identified as a component of those runtimes. Install one only when the affected application specifically reports that dependency.
Should I copy it into System32 or SysWOW64?
No. Use the application’s own installation directory and its original installer. Global copying can create conflicts and will not fix a missing dependency.
Can I register it with regsvr32?
Usually not. It is a private image-compression DLL, not a documented self-registering COM or ActiveX component.
What if antivirus quarantined it?
Check Windows Security → Virus & threat protection → Protection history. Prefer reinstalling the complete application. Restore the file only when its source, location, and authenticity are trustworthy.
What should I include when asking for help?
Provide the affected program’s name and version, your Windows version, the complete error text, the application’s installation path, whether swi32.dll exists elsewhere, and whether antivirus quarantined it. Do not upload a DLL from an unknown source.
What if reinstalling still does not work?
Confirm that the installer is for the exact application release, check antivirus history during setup, verify the application is compatible with your Windows version, and look for a missing dependency or architecture mismatch. If necessary, run the program in an appropriate legacy environment rather than mixing DLLs from unrelated installations.
