stmain.dll is an obsolete Microsoft file from the MSN Search Toolbar. If Windows reports that stmain.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, the most likely cause is a leftover toolbar registration rather than a damaged Windows installation.
Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before replacing anything, note:
- Which program shows the error: Windows startup, Internet Explorer, an old MSN application, or another program.
- When it began: after uninstalling MSN Toolbar or Bing Bar, cleaning the disk, restoring a backup, or an antivirus scan.
- Whether the file exists: search for
stmain.dllin File Explorer. - Its full path: a historical MSN Toolbar copy belonged in an MSN application folder, not
C:WindowsSystem32. - Your Windows architecture: 32-bit or 64-bit Windows does not determine which copy you should download. The old toolbar was associated with a 32-bit Internet Explorer add-on.
Commonly reported messages include:
- “stmain.dll is missing”
- “stmain.dll was not found”
- “Error loading stmain.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The program can’t start because stmain.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “Failed to load stmain.dll”
The wording can vary between applications. It does not prove that Windows itself is missing a system file.

What is stmain.dll?
stmain.dll was part of the MSN Search Toolbar, whose internal component name was st. It functioned as an Internet Explorer Browser Helper Object, or BHO. Historical installations placed it in a path similar to:
C:Program FilesMSN AppsST 1.02.3000.1002en-xustmain.dll
The associated Internet Explorer registration used this CLSID:

Microsoft later renamed MSN Toolbar to Bing Bar and released successive toolbar updates. This history is documented in Microsoft’s Bing Bar update information.
stmain.dll is not a current Windows component, Visual C++ runtime file, DirectX file, .NET component, driver, or protected file that belongs in System32 or SysWOW64.
Fix 1: Uninstall MSN Toolbar or Bing Bar
This is the safest and most likely fix on Windows 10 and Windows 11. If you no longer use the obsolete toolbar, removing the parent application is better than restoring a single DLL.
From Windows Settings
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Search for:
- MSN Toolbar
- Bing Bar
- MSN Search Toolbar
- an old MSN Apps entry
- Select the three dots beside the entry.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Follow the uninstall wizard.
- Restart Windows.
From Control Panel
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Find MSN Toolbar, Bing Bar, or a related MSN application.
- Select it and choose Uninstall.
- Restart the computer.
Microsoft documents both removal methods in its guide to uninstalling apps and programs in Windows.
How to tell whether this worked
The repair succeeded if:
- the startup error no longer appears;
- the old toolbar entry has disappeared;
- Windows no longer tries to load
stmain.dll; - the program that displayed the message opens normally.
If the error remains after uninstalling, the application may have left behind a Browser Helper Object, startup entry, scheduled task, or shortcut. Do not delete random registry keys. First check whether another old MSN application is still installed, then restart again.
Fix 2: Repair the complete legacy application
If you genuinely need an old MSN Toolbar installation on a legacy computer, repair the complete application rather than copying stmain.dll from another machine.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Select the MSN or Bing toolbar entry.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair or Reset, if Windows provides either option.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
You can also open Control Panel > Programs and Features, select the toolbar, and look for Repair or Change.
Do not assume that a historical Microsoft support page represents a current supported download. The old toolbar and Internet Explorer are retired technologies, so uninstalling them is generally preferable on current Windows versions.
If the error belongs to a different legacy program, use that program’s original installer or vendor-supported repair feature. There is no verified connection between stmain.dll and a current game, runtime package, or game middleware component.
Fix 3: Check whether Windows Security quarantined the file
If the error began immediately after an antivirus scan, the file may have been quarantined. Do not restore it solely because its filename matches stmain.dll.

- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open the app.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Find the detection involving
stmain.dll. - Expand the entry and review:
- the full file path;
- the detection name;
- the action taken;
- whether the file was in an old MSN Toolbar folder.
- Run a full scan before making a decision.
Microsoft explains quarantine and restoration in its Protection history guidance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsRestoration is reasonable only when the file is in the expected historical application directory, its publisher and digital signature are trustworthy, and your security software shows no broader infection. If it is in a temporary folder, a user profile folder, an unfamiliar program directory, or a random system directory, leave it quarantined and investigate the computer for malware.
After a verified restoration, repair or uninstall the parent toolbar. Restoring a quarantined DLL without repairing the obsolete application often leaves the original problem in place.
Fix 4: Inspect the file path and publisher
A filename alone does not establish that a DLL is legitimate.
To inspect a copy:
- Press Windows + E.
- Select This PC.
- Search for
stmain.dll. - Right-click each result and choose Open file location.
- Right-click the file and select Properties.
- Review the Details and Digital Signatures tabs.
- Record the full path and publisher information.
A historical MSN Toolbar copy would be expected in an MSN application directory beneath Program Files or Program Files (x86). A copy in System32, SysWOW64, a downloads folder, a temporary folder, or an unrelated application directory needs additional scrutiny.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not treat an old version number or file size as a universal identification test. Historical records report variation, and those values do not prove that a file is safe.
Run Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options > Full scan. If detections continue, disconnect the computer from sensitive accounts and seek malware-removal assistance before attempting DLL repairs.
Fix 5: Do not copy stmain.dll into System32 or SysWOW64
Manually copying a DLL is not a proper repair for this file. It can create:
- a mismatched toolbar version;
- incorrect application registration;
- 32-bit and 64-bit loading conflicts;
- a security risk from an untrusted file;
- a second copy that hides the original installation problem.
The historical toolbar component belonged in its own application directory. A 64-bit Windows installation does not mean that you need a 64-bit stmain.dll, and there is no verified current Microsoft package that supplies this file for Windows 10 or Windows 11.
Avoid random DLL download websites. Their files may contain malware, may be the wrong version or architecture, and often do not repair the stale toolbar registration that caused the message. Use Windows’ uninstall and repair tools, the original application installer, or Microsoft’s own Windows repair procedures instead.

Fix 6: Use SFC and DISM only for broader Windows corruption
System File Checker and Deployment Image Servicing and Management are not primary fixes for stmain.dll, because this was not a protected Windows system file. Use them when Windows has other symptoms, such as damaged built-in applications, failed updates, missing system components, or repeated operating-system errors.
Run DISM first
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to finish.
- Restart if Windows requests it.
Run System File Checker
Open an elevated Command Prompt again and run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent, then restart Windows.
SFC may report that it repaired Windows files, found no integrity violations, or could not repair some files. Even if it repairs system corruption, it will not normally restore a missing third-party MSN Toolbar DLL. If the stmain.dll message remains, return to the uninstall or application-repair steps.

Fix 7: Use System Restore after a recent change
System Restore is useful when the error began immediately after a cleanup utility, software installation, update, or backup restoration. It can reverse system configuration changes without removing personal documents.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the error began.
- Select Next > Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore is not a way to obtain a clean copy of stmain.dll. It is appropriate when a recent system change created the stale reference or removed the old application incorrectly. Microsoft provides additional instructions for System Restore.
Fix 8: Check drivers only when another error identifies a driver
stmain.dll is not a device driver, so updating drivers will not normally repair it. Check drivers only if the same incident also involves a printer, graphics device, network adapter, or another device that has its own error.

To update a device manually:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart if prompted.
For a device that stopped working after an update, open Properties > Driver and review Roll Back Driver, if available. Use the hardware manufacturer’s official support page when Windows cannot find a suitable driver.
If manually hunting through Device Manager and manufacturer pages leaves you guessing which of many drivers is stale, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers; its free scan shows the findings, while driver installation requires the full version.
Drivers are not a substitute for repairing or removing MSN Toolbar. If only stmain.dll is mentioned, return to the toolbar steps.
Does regsvr32 fix stmain.dll?
Usually, no.
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide a COM registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general-purpose missing-DLL repair command. Running:

Use regsvr32 only when the specific application’s official documentation explicitly requires it and identifies the exact DLL path and procedure. For this file, uninstalling or repairing the complete MSN Toolbar is safer.
Microsoft documents the command’s actual purpose in its regsvr32 reference.
Should you enable Windows Features or Internet Explorer?
No Windows Feature restores stmain.dll. Do not enable legacy Internet Explorer components merely to suppress this message.

Internet Explorer and the MSN Toolbar were designed for older Windows environments. On Windows 10 or Windows 11, a prompt for stmain.dll strongly suggests an obsolete application or leftover registration rather than a missing Windows feature.
Frequently asked questions
Is stmain.dll a Windows system file?
No. It was associated with the Microsoft MSN Search Toolbar and Internet Explorer. It does not belong in System32 or SysWOW64.
Is stmain.dll safe?
The historical file was a Microsoft application component, but every file with that name is not automatically safe. Verify its path, publisher, signature, and antivirus status.
Why does Windows ask for it after I removed MSN Toolbar?
The uninstall may have left a Browser Helper Object, startup entry, shortcut, scheduled task, or application registration that still points to the old file. Removing or repairing the parent application is safer than downloading a replacement.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Will Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET repair it?
No. stmain.dll is not documented as a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX, or .NET file. Installing those packages is unrelated unless the actual error names a different component.
Should I download a replacement DLL?
No. A downloaded DLL can be malicious, mismatched, or ineffective. Use the original application installer if a legacy installation is genuinely required, or uninstall the obsolete toolbar.
What if the error appears during startup but no toolbar is listed?
Check installed applications, startup entries, scheduled tasks, and old shortcuts for an MSN-related parent program. If the problem began recently, System Restore is safer than deleting registry entries manually.
When should I reinstall Windows?
A single stmain.dll message does not justify reinstalling Windows. First remove the obsolete toolbar, check quarantine, inspect the file path, and use SFC/DISM only if broader Windows corruption is present.
