Game-Key Cards are physical cards that unlock a download; they do not contain the full game. Nintendo says the format accommodates larger Switch 2 game data, but a reported leak about a 64GB full-game card option—and claims that cost is why publishers prefer Game-Key Cards—has not been confirmed by Nintendo.
What is a Switch 2 Game-Key Card?
Nintendo Switch 2 supports both regular game cards and Game-Key Cards. A regular game card contains the game data; a Game-Key Card acts as a physical key that lets you download the game. Nintendo’s Game-Key Card overview explains that the complete game is not stored on the key card.
| What to expect | Regular game card | Game-Key Card |
|---|---|---|
| Full game data on the card | Yes | No; the card unlocks a download |
| Initial internet connection and download | Not specified for this comparison by Nintendo Support | Required to download the game and for first launch |
| Storage for game data | Not specified for this comparison by Nintendo Support | System memory or a microSD Express card; required space is shown on the packaging and digital listing |
| Card needed while playing | Not specified for this comparison by Nintendo Support | Yes; keep the Game-Key Card inserted |
Nintendo says a Nintendo Account is not required to download Game-Key Card data. After the download and first launch, you can start the game offline, but the card must still be inserted. If system memory is short, a compatible microSD Express card is an optional way to add storage.
What did Nintendo confirm about why publishers use them?
In its 85th Annual General Meeting shareholder Q&A, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa described Game-Key Cards as “one of the new software distribution methods we have introduced to accommodate the larger game data sizes on Nintendo Switch 2 compared to Nintendo Switch.” The statement gives Nintendo’s official rationale: handling larger game data. It does not say that full-game cards are limited to 64GB or that price is the decisive reason publishers choose the download-key format. See Nintendo’s 85th Annual General Meeting Q&A summary, Q16.

What the cartridge-size leak claimed—and what remains uncertain
A May 2025 report by Nintendo Life, citing leaker and Universo Nintendo editor Necrolipe, said third-party publishers had three options: digital-only, Game-Key Card, or a 64GB card containing the full game. The report itself treated the claim as unclear and unconfirmed. It should not be read as Nintendo’s official cartridge policy. Nintendo Life’s report describes the alleged options and its uncertainty.
In December 2025, GamesRadar reported that publisher ININ Games had retracted a statement suggesting Nintendo would announce smaller cards. The publisher clarified that Nintendo had not officially confirmed those capacities. That correction does not prove smaller cards became available; it reinforces that the full current menu of cartridge capacities is not established in the cited official information. GamesRadar’s report on the retraction covers the claim and correction.

What this means when deciding whether to buy one
- If you want the game data on the physical card: a Game-Key Card is not that format; it requires a full download.
- If you have limited storage or unreliable internet: check the required space printed on the Game-Key Card packaging or shown on the digital listing, and plan for the initial download.
- If you want to play offline after downloading: Nintendo says subsequent starts can be offline, but the Game-Key Card must be inserted.
The practical distinction is confirmed even though the leak is not: a Game-Key Card is a physical purchase tied to a full digital download, while the reported 64GB-only full-game option and a cost-based explanation for publisher choices remain unverified.
