Sudachi is no longer in active development. The project’s developer, Jarrod Norwell, said the immediate reason was that he needed to focus on Folium, his paid multi-emulator project for iOS—not that Nintendo had directly forced Sudachi to close. That distinction matters, although Nintendo’s legal pressure on the Switch-emulation scene was an important part of the background.
Why Sudachi development stopped
Sudachi’s official website said the emulator was “no longer in-development and won’t be for some time.” According to reporting from Android Authority, Norwell explained that he had a required commitment to Folium, which he had already been developing for more than a year.

In other words, the documented immediate reason was developer time and priorities. Sudachi was a project led by a solo developer, and Norwell moved his focus to Folium rather than continuing active work on the Switch emulator.

So, did Nintendo shut down Sudachi?
Not directly, based on the available evidence. Sudachi was reported as no longer in development on August 25, 2025. Nintendo’s later DMCA action against GitHub-hosted Sudachi repositories was reported on February 13, 2026—months after development had already stopped. The later notices therefore cannot be the event that ended development.
It would also be misleading to say Nintendo had nothing to do with the project’s circumstances. Sudachi was a fork of Yuzu, and it was among the Yuzu-derived projects affected by Nintendo-related DMCA pressure after Yuzu shut down. Sudachi’s Discord and GitHub pages were reported as having been taken down, with later rehosting on private servers. Norwell had also described the Switch-emulation environment as “very unsafe and unpleasant.”

- 6.2” LCD screen
- Three play modes: TV, tabletop, and handheld
- Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
- Detachable Joy-Con controllers
- Nintendo Switch is the home of Mario & friends
Those factors help explain the difficult environment around Sudachi, but they are not the same as evidence that Nintendo directly ordered or caused the August 2025 development halt. The clearest account is narrower: Norwell stopped active work because of his commitment to Folium, against a backdrop of continuing legal and platform pressure.

When development ended, the final version was expected to remain available, and users were reportedly encouraged to move to Eden. However, the supplied reporting does not verify whether an official Sudachi download was still available as of August 7, 2026.

A mirror of the project’s source repository lists Android, Linux, macOS, and Windows support and identifies the codebase as C++. But it is explicitly not an active development channel: its README says compatibility information is unavailable, contributions will not be accepted, and pull requests will be closed. The visible source history ends in April 2024, including a commit dated April 13, 2024. That repository history should not be treated as proof of the date of Sudachi’s final binary release.
The project’s later availability is also complicated by Nintendo’s continued enforcement activity. On February 13, 2026, Android Authority reported that Nintendo sent DMCA notices to GitHub repositories associated with Sudachi and Skyline, even though those projects were inactive. That action concerned GitHub-hosted repositories; it does not prove that every copy or mirror of Sudachi disappeared.

How Sudachi relates to Yuzu and Eden
Sudachi was a Yuzu fork that aimed to add enhancements beyond Yuzu’s final release. After Sudachi development stopped, Norwell contributed to Eden, which the Sudachi homepage promoted as a fork making “real, significant changes.” That recommendation is why Eden became the more relevant successor for users looking for continued Switch-emulation development.
“Successor” should not be read as an official transfer of Sudachi ownership or a guarantee of compatibility. The evidence supports saying that Norwell contributed to Eden and promoted it as the recommended alternative; it does not provide a current, authoritative compatibility list or setup guide for either emulator.

What the Nintendo legal dispute does—and does not—mean
Nintendo’s legal theory, as described in the cited reporting, involves circumvention of technological protection measures, including console cryptographic keys used to decrypt games. The reporting says Sudachi, Citron, and Eden did not bundle those keys with their emulator software. Users were described as needing to modify their own consoles and import their own keys and firmware.
That distinction does not eliminate legal risk. Laws differ by country, and distributing copyrighted games, console keys, or firmware can raise separate legal and platform-policy issues. Readers should use only software and data they are legally entitled to use and should check the law where they live.
The Yuzu case also did not produce a court ruling that emulation itself is illegal. Nintendo and Yuzu settled out of court, so that settlement did not resolve the broader legal status of emulation. Nintendo’s lawsuits and DMCA notices show that the company is willing to challenge projects it believes facilitate circumvention, but they are not the same as a universal judicial ban on emulation.
The accurate bottom line
Sudachi is no longer actively maintained. Its developer’s stated immediate reason was the need to work on Folium, while Nintendo’s actions and the wider legal climate formed a significant part of the surrounding context. Nintendo’s 2026 DMCA notices came after Sudachi had already ended development, so saying “Nintendo shut down Sudachi” gets the timeline wrong. Saying Nintendo played no role in the project’s hostile operating environment leaves out important context.
For users, the practical takeaway is that Sudachi should be treated as a discontinued emulator rather than an evolving project. Its final build may still exist in some locations, but current official availability, version details, setup instructions, and compatibility claims were not verified by the available sources. Eden was the alternative promoted by Norwell, but users should evaluate its current distribution and legal situation independently.
