You can play Xbox games on a Windows 11 PC in four main ways: install compatible titles through Xbox Play Anywhere or PC Game Pass, stream supported games with Xbox Cloud Gaming, or use Remote Play to stream games from your own Xbox console. Your Xbox purchase does not automatically include a Windows version, so the first step is identifying which entitlement or streaming method applies.
Choose the right way to play

Method 1: Install Xbox Play Anywhere games
Xbox Play Anywhere is the clearest route from an Xbox purchase to a Windows installation. A participating digital game can be played on compatible Windows PCs and Xbox One or Xbox Series consoles. Look for the Xbox Play Anywhere icon on the game’s Microsoft Store listing or on Xbox.com.

Install the game
- Sign in to Windows, the Xbox app and Microsoft Store with the Microsoft account that owns the game.
- Open the Xbox app from Start > Xbox.
- Find the game in your library and choose the install option.
- If it is not shown in the Xbox app, open Search on the taskbar > Microsoft Store > Library.
- Open My library > All owned, locate the game and select its Download icon.
A Download icon means the game is associated with the account but is not installed on that PC. Installation still depends on the PC meeting the game’s compatibility and system requirements.
Method 2: Install games with PC Game Pass
PC Game Pass gives subscribers access to eligible PC games on compatible Windows devices. It is separate from simply owning an Xbox console game: the game must be included in the PC catalog and have a Windows-compatible version.
- Install or open the Xbox app on Windows 11.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account holding the PC Game Pass subscription.
- Browse or search the PC Game Pass catalog.
- Select a game and choose Install.
You can also use the Microsoft Store. Open Start > Microsoft Store > Gaming, select a game, and choose Get when it is available through your account. Microsoft associates the PC Game Pass entitlement with the account for compatible Windows devices. An individual game can be used on only one device at a time under the applicable usage rules.

Method 3: Stream games with Xbox Cloud Gaming
Xbox Cloud Gaming lets you play supported Xbox games without installing them locally. It is useful when your PC lacks storage or hardware for a native installation, but it depends more heavily on your connection and Microsoft’s regional and device support.

Use the Xbox Cloud Gaming service and sign in with the account that has the required Game Pass Ultimate access. The device must be registered and signed in, and your internet connection must provide enough bandwidth for streaming. Some games and features are unavailable in particular territories or on particular devices.
Cloud Gaming is not the same as downloading an Xbox license to Windows: the game runs on Microsoft’s servers and sends an interactive video stream to your PC. Expect a better experience from a stable, low-latency connection than from an unreliable or congested network.
Method 4: Use Xbox Remote Play
Remote Play streams games from your personal Xbox console to your Windows 11 PC. It is the appropriate option when you want to use the games installed or available on your console, including titles that do not provide a Windows installation entitlement.
Set it up through Microsoft’s current How to set up remote play support guide. This is Xbox Remote Play, not Windows Remote Desktop. Remote Desktop is a separate Windows feature for connecting to another Windows PC and is not the Xbox-console streaming method.

Because Remote Play depends on communication with your console, the console must be configured for the feature and the quality of the experience depends on the network between the console and Windows PC. A console-only purchase can therefore be playable through Remote Play even when it cannot be installed natively on Windows.
Install and connect an Xbox controller
Windows 11 can pair a compatible Xbox Wireless Controller over Bluetooth. First make the controller discoverable:
- Press and hold the controller’s Xbox button and the Connect button. The Connect button is on the top of the controller.
- On the PC, open Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Add device > Everything else.
- Select Xbox Wireless Controller.
- Follow any additional prompts and select Done.
If the controller does not appear, repeat the Xbox-plus-Connect step before opening the Add device screen. The controller must be in discoverable mode when Windows scans for it.
Use Xbox mode in Windows 11
Xbox mode is a controller-oriented, full-screen Windows gaming interface. It is separate from Xbox Game Bar, although Game Bar provides one way to open it. Microsoft documents Xbox mode for all editions of Windows 11 version 24H2 and 25H2, but the feature is available only in supported markets.

Enable Xbox mode on a regular PC
- Open Start > Settings > Gaming > Xbox mode.
- Select Enable Xbox mode.
- Optionally enable Show Xbox mode in Task View.
Configure it on a gaming handheld
- Open Start > Settings > Gaming > Xbox mode.
- Select Choose home app and choose the gaming home app you want Xbox mode to launch.
- Optionally enable Enter Xbox mode on startup.
- Selecting None turns Xbox mode off.
Enter or exit Xbox mode
You can enter it from Game Bar with Win + G or the controller’s Xbox button, then open Settings; from Task View with Win + Tab; or directly with Win + F11. Use Game Bar settings, Task View or Win + F11 to leave it.
Xbox mode displays one window at a time and makes supported apps full-screen where possible. Some desktop keyboard shortcuts are disabled. Apps that do not support full-screen can appear against a black background.

The game is not in your PC library
Check Microsoft Store > Library > My library > All owned. If it is absent, verify that Windows, Xbox and Microsoft Store are using the same Microsoft account. Other possibilities include:
- The purchase belongs to a different account.
- The game has no Windows-compatible version.
- The purchase is a console-only license.
- The title is not part of Xbox Play Anywhere.
A standard Xbox One or Xbox Series digital purchase is not automatically a Windows entitlement. Native Windows installation is guaranteed across Xbox and PC specifically for participating Xbox Play Anywhere titles, or is available when the game is separately sold for Windows or PC.

The game says it is incompatible
Some Microsoft Store games work only on particular device types or Windows versions. Review the game’s compatibility details in the Store and check the publisher’s minimum system requirements. A Play Anywhere entitlement does not remove ordinary hardware, operating-system or device restrictions.
Windows tries to install to the wrong device
Microsoft permits up to 10 devices for the relevant account. To remove an old or incorrect device, open account.microsoft.com/devices, select Show details or Manage, choose More actions, and select Remove.
The game is already being used elsewhere
Play Anywhere and PC Game Pass usage rules limit an individual game to one active device or console at a time. Game Pass Ultimate can cover PC and console use under its applicable terms, but it does not make simultaneous use of the same game across multiple devices permissible.
Cloud streaming is unavailable
Confirm that you are signed in on the registered streaming device, that your connection has sufficient bandwidth, and that the game, device and service are supported in your territory. If those conditions are not met, install a compatible PC version or use Remote Play from your own console instead.
Xbox mode is missing
Check the Windows version under Settings > System > About. Xbox mode requires Windows 11 version 24H2 or later and is restricted to supported markets. It is not a universal feature of earlier Windows 11 releases.
