Sword and Fairy: Together Forever is worth considering if you want a real-time action RPG with a distinctive Chinese mythology setting, striking art direction, and the ability to switch among party members in combat. Reviews are mixed, however: the game’s visual identity and variety do not guarantee equally polished combat or performance. On PS5, weigh the story and combat style against the mixed critic reception; on PC, check your hardware and recent player-review sample before buying.
What game are the reviews discussing?
The game is called Sword and Fairy: Together Forever on PlayStation and Xbox storefronts and Sword and Fairy 7 on Steam. Steam lists its PC release as October 21, 2021; the PlayStation listing gives August 4, 2022 for the console release. The story follows conflict among the Human, Deity, and Demon clans. Store descriptions present it as a standalone entry, so newcomers are not expected to need prior series knowledge.

Its core is a single-player action RPG, not a turn-based RPG: combat unfolds in real time, and you can switch between party characters. Exploration, character skill progression, spirit creatures, and a card-battle mini-game broaden the experience. The Steam listing and PlayStation Store listing describe the game and its features.
What do the reviews say?
PS5 critic reception is mixed
Metacritic’s PS5 page displays a score of 73 from 21 critic reviews in the snapshot available for this article: 11 positive (52%), 9 mixed (43%), and 1 negative (5%). Treat that as a dated, platform-specific aggregation, not a universal verdict or a prediction of how the game will run on your console. Reviews in the aggregation praise art direction, combat, variety, world design, and character moments; criticism points to uneven quality, including concerns about combat and technical performance. The range of responses is a reason to focus on the parts of the game you care about rather than treating a single score as decisive. Metacritic’s PS5 review page contains the score and selected excerpts.
#1 Best Overall

- Learn and equip new skills as you progress
- Capture, tame and feed spirit creatures that aid you in different ways
- Play card battle mini-games in between intense battles
Steam player ratings are positive, but the samples differ
Steam’s listing snapshot shows 87% positive among 944 English-language reviews, labeled Very Positive, while its recent rating shows 75% positive among 29 recent reviews across languages, labeled Mostly Positive. The recent sample is small, and both percentages and review counts can change. They reflect Steam users, not a controlled comparison with the PS5 version. Check the current Steam listing for the live figures.
PlayStation Store users rate it highly
The PlayStation Store snapshot shows 4.42 out of 5 from roughly 1,800 ratings. This is a platform-store rating that can change and may vary by region or page snapshot; it should not be read as equivalent to a professional review score. The store page displays the current listing information.

What kind of player is it best for?
Consider it if you value setting and presentation
The Chinese mythology premise and visual style are central attractions, and the review material includes praise for the art direction and environments. That praise concerns visual identity; it does not establish consistently smooth performance on every platform.
Consider the combat before buying
Real-time battles and instant party switching are defining features, so the game is a better fit if you want action combat than if you are specifically seeking a turn-based system. Reviews are not unanimous about combat quality. A trailer can show the basic format, but it cannot settle whether the moment-to-moment feel will suit you.

Look elsewhere if polish is your top priority
The mixed critic response includes concerns about uneven quality and technical performance. The available review aggregation does not provide a platform-by-platform performance test, so it cannot establish frame rate, loading times, or smoothness on a particular PS5, Xbox, or PC configuration.
Which version should you buy?
PS5 and PS4
The PlayStation Store lists digital PS4 and PS5 versions, Chinese voice, and screen-language options including Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, English, and Japanese. Confirm the exact language and compatibility details on your regional store page before purchase. The console release date listed by PlayStation is August 4, 2022. A European physical PS4/PS5 edition was announced by Tesura Games, with preorders offered through its store, major retailers, and Amazon at the time of the announcement; that announcement does not confirm current stock, price, or shipping availability. Check the retailer listing for the exact edition and region. Tesura Games’ physical-edition announcement describes that release.

Quick Recap
How to make the purchase decision
- Buy if: the mythology setting, visual style, and real-time party combat are the main draw, and mixed reviews do not put you off.
- Pause if: reliable platform-specific performance evidence or highly polished combat is essential to your choice; the review snapshots here do not settle those questions.
- Before paying: compare the current regional price and edition, verify language and platform details, and check whether any desired expansion is sold for your platform. Store prices, promotions, ratings, and physical stock can change.
