| Item | Details |
|---|---|
| File | swshellfilelauncherresu.dll |
| Component | swShellFileLauncher |
| Software | SOLIDWORKS desktop software and shared utilities |
| Publisher | Dassault Systèmes SolidWorks Corp. |
| Typical role | Supports launching SOLIDWORKS files from Windows Explorer |
| Typical location | A SOLIDWORKS language or resource folder |
| Universal version or size | Not established; these vary by release, service pack, language, and installation |
This is not a Windows system DLL. It is not normally supplied by Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, or a graphics driver. The filename and its placement in language directories indicate that it is likely a localized resource or support module for the SOLIDWORKS shell launcher.
A common location is:
C:Program FilesCommon FilesSOLIDWORKS SharedlangEnglish
Older releases can use a product-specific lang directory instead. Do not assume that every SOLIDWORKS installation uses the same path.

Fix 1: Repair SOLIDWORKS
Repair is the safest and most likely solution because it restores the correct DLL, language resources, dependencies, and shell-launcher configuration together.
- Close SOLIDWORKS and any SOLIDWORKS-related tools.
- Press
Windows, type Control Panel, and open it. - Select Programs > Programs and Features.
- Find the installed SOLIDWORKS version or SOLIDWORKS product entry.
- Right-click it and choose Change.
- In SOLIDWORKS Installation Manager, select Repair your installation.
- Select the affected SOLIDWORKS product.
- Clear unrelated products if the installer allows individual product selection.
- Continue through the wizard and click Repair.
- Restart Windows when the repair finishes.
SOLIDWORKS repair requires the original installation files and any service-pack files applied to that installation. If the repair completes successfully, open SOLIDWORKS directly and then double-click the file that previously failed.
If the main SOLIDWORKS program opens but Explorer still produces the error, continue to the file-association steps below.
If SOLIDWORKS is not listed
The installation may have been removed partially, registered under a different entry, or managed through an administrative image, PDM deployment, or 3DEXPERIENCE installation. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps and search for SOLIDWORKS there as well.
Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11If no usable entry exists, obtain installation media for the same major SOLIDWORKS release and service pack from the official SOLIDWORKS Downloads page. Run setup.exe as administrator, then choose the repair or reinstall option offered for the installed product. Do not combine files from different SOLIDWORKS releases.
Fix 2: Repair the matching language resources
swshellfilelauncherresu.dll is associated with SOLIDWORKS language/resource folders. That matters when the error starts after changing the SOLIDWORKS language, adding a language pack, installing a service pack, or completing an update incompletely.
First, check the installation manually:
- Open File Explorer.
- Browse to the SOLIDWORKS shared folder under
C:Program FilesCommon Files. - Open the
SOLIDWORKS Sharedfolder, if present. - Open
lang, then the language folder used by SOLIDWORKS. - Search for
swshellfilelauncherresu.dll.
Do not copy an English file into a German, French, or other language folder. Do not copy a DLL from another computer or another SOLIDWORKS year. A file from the wrong release, service pack, language, or architecture can leave the launcher in a worse state.
If the file is absent, repair the SOLIDWORKS installation and select the required language or product components. If the file exists but Windows reports that a specified module cannot be found, another dependency may be missing. Repairing or reinstalling the complete SOLIDWORKS product is safer than replacing only this file.
Fix 3: Restore SOLIDWORKS file associations
When SOLIDWORKS opens normally but double-clicking a part or drawing fails, the problem may be the Explorer association or a damaged per-user configuration.
Start with SOLIDWORKS itself:
- Open the Start menu and launch SOLIDWORKS directly.
- Run it as administrator if the association option is unavailable. Right-click SOLIDWORKS and select Run as administrator.
- Open Tools > Options.
- Look for the System Options > File Explorer section.
- Use the available option to restore or register SOLIDWORKS file associations.
- Apply the change and close SOLIDWORKS.
- Restart File Explorer or restart Windows.
- Test a
.SLDPRT,.SLDDRW, or.SLDASMfile.
The exact wording and location of the association control can differ between SOLIDWORKS releases. If one Windows account has the problem but another account can open the same file, the installation may be healthy and the original user profile may be damaged.

You can also reset the association from Windows:
- Right-click a SOLIDWORKS file.
- Select Open with > Choose another app.
- Select SOLIDWORKS.
- Enable Always use this app to open these files.
- Click OK.
Repeat this for each affected SOLIDWORKS file type. If the error returns only for one Windows profile, test a new profile before considering a full Windows reinstall.
Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can quarantine application files after an update or scan. This is not proof that swshellfilelauncherresu.dll is malicious, but a sudden disappearance should be investigated.
- Open Windows Security or your installed antivirus application.
- Open Virus & threat protection or the equivalent security area.
- Select Protection history, Quarantine, or Detected items.
- Search for an event involving the SOLIDWORKS installation folder.
- Check the recorded path and detection details.
- Restore the file only if it came from the original SOLIDWORKS installation and its location is correct.
- Run the SOLIDWORKS repair afterward.
Before restoring anything, verify the file’s digital signature. Right-click the DLL, select Properties, open Digital Signatures, and inspect the signer. A legitimate installation should identify Dassault Systèmes SolidWorks Corp. If the signature is absent, invalid, or the file is outside the SOLIDWORKS directory, do not restore it manually. Repair SOLIDWORKS from trusted installation media instead.
Fix 5: Reinstall SOLIDWORKS from matching media
Use a reinstall when repair is unavailable, the installation source cannot be found, or the installation remains damaged after repair.
- Note the installed SOLIDWORKS major release and service pack if shown in Programs and Features or Installation Manager.
- Download the matching media through the official SOLIDWORKS Downloads page.
- Sign in with the account, subscription access, or serial number required by SOLIDWORKS.
- Extract or mount the installation media.
- Right-click
setup.exeand select Run as administrator. - Choose the existing release.
- Select Repair if offered.
- If repair is not available, follow the product’s uninstall and reinstall workflow.
- Include the required language and shared SOLIDWORKS components.
- Restart Windows and test Explorer launching.
Do not install a newer release merely because it is available, and do not mix a DLL from one release with another. If several SOLIDWORKS versions are installed, repair the version assigned to the affected file extension, which may not be the newest version.
If the installer asks for unavailable source files, use the official Downloads page to obtain the same release and service pack, or contact your SOLIDWORKS reseller. Continuing with random replacement files is not a substitute for missing installation media.

Windows repair commands do not normally restore a third-party SOLIDWORKS DLL. Use them when Windows has other symptoms, such as damaged built-in apps, failed updates, servicing errors, or when SOLIDWORKS repair reports a Windows component problem.
Open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Press
Windows, type Command Prompt. - Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
- Run DISM first:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish, then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Retry SOLIDWORKS repair and test the file association.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC because DISM can repair the component store that SFC uses. These commands check Windows components, not the SOLIDWORKS installation itself.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting slow and unclear. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for related Windows problems and show what needs attention; its repair functions require the full version. Reinstalling SOLIDWORKS remains the definitive fix when this specific DLL is missing from the application installation.
Fix 7: Check drivers only for wider graphics or system symptoms
A graphics driver is not the normal home of swshellfilelauncherresu.dll, and updating a driver will not replace this SOLIDWORKS file. Consider a driver check only if SOLIDWORKS also crashes during normal operation, displays graphics errors, or Windows reports broader device problems.
To check manually:
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the graphics device and select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab and review its status.
- Use Update Driver only when a compatible driver is available from the hardware manufacturer or Windows Update.
- Restart Windows and test SOLIDWORKS.
Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers instead of making you hunt through numerous hardware pages; the full version performs the driver installation. This is secondary troubleshooting, not a replacement for repairing the SOLIDWORKS release that owns the DLL.

Do not download the DLL separately
Random DLL archives may provide the wrong release, language, architecture, or a modified file. Even a genuine-looking replacement may not fix a missing dependency, broken registration, damaged association, or incomplete SOLIDWORKS installation.

Use the original SOLIDWORKS installer, official SOLIDWORKS Downloads, or a reseller instead.
Do not copy it into Windows folders
Do not place the file in:
C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64
C:Windows
Those folders are not the normal location for this SOLIDWORKS component. System32 and SysWOW64 also have specific 64-bit and 32-bit roles, so copying files between them can create more confusion. The correct architecture is determined by the installed SOLIDWORKS release and installer, not by a generic download page.
Do not routinely run regsvr32
regsvr32 is for DLLs that provide registration functions such as DllRegisterServer. There is no reliable evidence that this resource-related SOLIDWORKS DLL should be manually registered.
Do not use:
regsvr32 swshellfilelauncherresu.dll
unless SOLIDWORKS Support gives release-specific instructions. Registration will not restore missing language resources, dependent modules, or Explorer associations.
FAQ
Is swshellfilelauncherresu.dll a Windows DLL?
No. It belongs to the SOLIDWORKS installation and supports swShellFileLauncher, the component involved in opening SOLIDWORKS files from Explorer.
Why does SOLIDWORKS open directly while double-clicking fails?
Direct launching can work while the Explorer shell launcher, file association, language resource, or per-user configuration is damaged. Repair the installation, then restore file associations.
Which SOLIDWORKS version should I repair?
Repair the version associated with the affected file extension. Do not assume the newest installed SOLIDWORKS version owns that association.
Is the file 32-bit or 64-bit?
A universal architecture cannot be confirmed for every release. Architecture and location can vary with the SOLIDWORKS installation. Use the matching installer rather than copying a file based on a listing from another release.
Should I reinstall Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
These are not established as the primary cause of this specific error. Repair SOLIDWORKS first. Investigate runtimes only if the SOLIDWORKS installer or another error specifically identifies one as missing.
What if repair says it cannot find the source?
Obtain matching installation media for the same SOLIDWORKS release and service pack through the official SOLIDWORKS Downloads page. If access is unavailable, contact your SOLIDWORKS reseller or support channel.
Recommended Free Tools
When should I contact SOLIDWORKS Support?
Escalate when matching media cannot repair the product, the file signature is invalid, several releases conflict, the installation is managed by PDM or an administrative image, or the error continues after repair and association reset. Provide the SOLIDWORKS release, service pack, language, exact error text, file path, and repair log.
