If sxs.dll is missing or was not found, repair Windows first with DISM and SFC rather than downloading a replacement. If only one program fails, the real problem may be that application’s private DLL, manifest, or Visual C++ side-by-side dependency rather than the Windows copy of sxs.dll.

What this file actually does

sxs.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component. Its file description is commonly shown as Fusion 2.5, and it belongs to Windows’ side-by-side assembly and activation-context system.

Windows uses application manifests to select compatible versions of assemblies. The side-by-side system helps separate applications from incompatible shared runtime versions. The WinSxS component store supplies and maintains many of those Windows components.

On 64-bit Windows, the native 64-bit copy is normally associated with:

C:WindowsSystem32sxs.dll

32-bit applications use Windows’ WOW64 redirection and normally access the 32-bit system directory:

C:WindowsSysWOW64sxs.dll

The names can be confusing: System32 contains the native 64-bit system files on 64-bit Windows, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system files. A 32-bit program cannot be repaired with an arbitrary 64-bit replacement.

Microsoft explains the side-by-side cache and manifest system in its WinSxS documentation, and its Sxs.dll file tables identify the file as part of Microsoft Windows.

The version and size shown in File Explorer depend on the Windows release and servicing level. Historical examples include both 32-bit and 64-bit files from Windows releases in the 10.0 and 6.3 version families, but those examples are not a complete list of current versions.

Match the symptom to the likely cause

What you observe Most likely cause Start here
Several unrelated programs fail Damaged or missing Windows component Run DISM, then SFC
One old game or application fails Damaged application files, private DLL, or invalid manifest Repair or reinstall the application
The error names Microsoft.VC80.CRT, Microsoft.VC90.CRT, Microsoft.VC100.CRT, or another VC assembly Missing Visual C++ runtime Trace the error, then install the required Microsoft runtime architecture
The error began after antivirus action Windows or application file was quarantined Review Protection history
The error began after an update or driver installation Recent system change or component corruption Install pending updates or use System Restore
sxs.dll appears in a crash report but is present and signed The DLL may only be part of the process that crashed Use Event Viewer and sxstrace.exe
The error points to an application folder The application’s private copy or manifest may be damaged Repair or reinstall that application

Common messages include:

  • “The program can’t start because sxs.dll is missing from your computer.”
  • “sxs.dll was not found.”
  • “sxs.dll file could not be loaded.”
  • “The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect.”
  • “The procedure entry point could not be located in the dynamic link library …sxs.dll.”
  • “sxs.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”

The exact wording varies by Windows version and by the application’s loader state. A message mentioning sxs.dll does not automatically prove that the Windows file itself is defective.

1. Check which copy the error concerns

Before replacing anything, determine whether Windows or the application supplied the file.

Search the Windows directories

Open Start, type Command Prompt, right-click it, choose Run as administrator, and approve the User Account Control prompt.

Run:

where /r "%windir%" sxs.dll
dir "%windir%System32sxs.dll"
dir "%windir%SysWOW64sxs.dll"

The search may find more than two copies inside Windows component locations. That is not, by itself, evidence of corruption.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the System32 or SysWOW64 command reports that the file cannot be found, continue to the DISM and SFC repair below. Do not copy a file from an unrelated computer.

Check the publisher and signature

To inspect a visible copy:

  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. Enter %windir%System32 in the address bar.
  3. Locate sxs.dll.
  4. Right-click it and select Properties.
  5. Open Digital Signatures.
  6. Select the signature and choose Details.
  7. Review the publisher and signature status.
  8. Open Details to view the file description and version.

A normal Windows copy should be digitally signed by Microsoft. If the file is unsigned, the signature is invalid, or the file is located beside one particular program, do not overwrite it manually. Repair the relevant Windows component or application instead.

Also inspect the folder named in the error. If the path resembles:

C:Program FilesExampleAppsxs.dll

the failing program may be loading an application-supplied copy. In that situation, Windows servicing may not repair the application file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Repair Windows with DISM and SFC

This is the safest first repair when the file is missing from the Windows directories, several applications fail, or the problem started after an update, storage issue, cleanup operation, or malware-removal action.

Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker because DISM repairs the Windows component source that SFC uses.

Run DISM

  1. Save your work and close open applications.
  2. Open Start.
  3. Type Command Prompt.
  4. Right-click Command Prompt.
  5. Select Run as administrator.
  6. Choose Yes when Windows asks for permission.
  7. Enter this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Wait for the operation to finish. Do not close the window merely because progress appears to pause.

DISM may use Windows Update as its repair source. When it completes successfully, continue with SFC in the same elevated Command Prompt.

Run System File Checker

Enter:

sfc /scannow

Press Enter and allow the verification to reach 100 percent. Then interpret the result:

  • Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: SFC found no damaged protected files. Continue with application and side-by-side diagnosis if the program still fails.
  • Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: Restart Windows and test the program again.
  • Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: Run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC. If it still cannot repair the files, use the escalation steps below.

Restart after the repair, even if Windows does not explicitly require it. Then launch the affected application normally.

If repeatedly hunting through Windows repair results and CBS logs is becoming difficult, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for reported problems and show what needs attention; its free scan identifies issues, while repair actions require the full version. It is optional, and Windows’ built-in DISM and SFC remain the correct first repair path.

Use a matching repair source if DISM cannot repair Windows

If DISM reports that source files could not be found, do not download sxs.dll from a DLL repository. Microsoft documents an offline source form using a matching Windows repair source:

  • MICROSOFT WINDOWS 11 PRO (INGLES) FPP 64-BIT ENG INTL USB FLASH DRIVE
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess

Replace C:RepairSourceWindows only with a verified, matching Windows source that you control. An incorrect source can fail to repair the installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If DISM and SFC still cannot restore the component, install pending Windows updates and consider an in-place Windows repair installation using appropriate Windows installation media. Microsoft’s recovery options describe escalation paths including update removal, System Restore, and reinstalling Windows.

3. Repair or reinstall the affected application

If only one program fails, especially an old game or portable application, repair the program before changing Windows files.

Use the application’s repair option

For a traditional Windows application:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Choose Apps.
  4. Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
  5. Find the affected program.
  6. Open its menu or select the program entry.
  7. Choose Advanced options if available.
  8. Select Repair.
  9. Test the application.

If Repair does not solve the problem, return to the same screen and choose Reset only if you understand that it may remove the application’s settings or local data.

Some desktop programs provide their own repair tool in Control Panel:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Start and type Control Panel.
  2. Select Programs.
  3. Choose Programs and Features.
  4. Select the affected program.
  5. Choose Change, Repair, or Modify if offered.
  6. Follow the installer prompts.

Reinstall from the original vendor

If the program has no repair option:

  1. Back up saved games, profiles, templates, or other personal data.
  2. Uninstall the program from Settings → Apps or Control Panel → Programs and Features.
  3. Restart Windows.
  4. Download or restore the installer from the original software vendor or your legitimate game launcher.
  5. Install the program again.
  6. Test it before adding modifications, unofficial patches, or copied DLLs.

If a game launcher offers Verify, Verify integrity, or Repair, use that feature. It can restore the game’s own files without replacing Windows components.

Do not overwrite an application folder’s sxs.dll with a copy from System32. A private application copy may be tied to that program’s manifest, architecture, or loader expectations.

4. Find out whether the missing item is really a Visual C++ assembly

Side-by-side errors often mention sxs.dll even though the missing item is a dependent assembly such as Microsoft.VC80.CRT, Microsoft.VC90.CRT, or Microsoft.VC100.CRT.

Do not install Visual C++ Redistributables merely because the error contains the word “side-by-side.” Confirm the dependency first.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check Event Viewer

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Event Viewer.
  3. Open it.
  4. Expand Windows Logs.
  5. Select Application.
  6. Look for an error recorded at the time the program failed.
  7. Read the General and Details tabs.
  8. Look for a missing assembly, invalid manifest, activation-context failure, or architecture mismatch.

Microsoft’s documented side-by-side errors include ERROR_SXS_ASSEMBLY_NOT_FOUND, manifest format and parse errors, and ERROR_SXS_FILE_HASH_MISMATCH. These describe different failures and are more useful than the filename alone.

Trace the loader with sxstrace

Open an elevated Command Prompt and start tracing:

sxstrace trace -logfile:sxstrace.etl

Leave that window open. Reproduce the application failure, then return to the Command Prompt and stop tracing:

sxstrace stoptrace

Convert the trace into readable text:

sxstrace parse -logfile:sxstrace.etl -outfile:sxstrace.txt

Open the result:

notepad sxstrace.txt

Search the file for:

  • assembly
  • Microsoft.VC
  • manifest
  • ERROR
  • architecture

If the trace identifies a Visual C++ assembly, use Microsoft’s Latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads. Match the package to the application:

  • A 32-bit application needs the x86 redistributable, even on 64-bit Windows.
  • A 64-bit application needs the x64 redistributable.
  • Older applications may require an older runtime family named by the trace.
  • Multiple Visual C++ runtime versions can legitimately coexist.

Repair or reinstall the exact runtime indicated by the trace, then restart the application. Installing the newest package is not guaranteed to replace every older dependency.

5. Check architecture before changing anything

A 32-bit program cannot use a 64-bit replacement for sxs.dll, and a 64-bit program cannot use a 32-bit replacement. Windows’ WOW64 file-system redirection keeps these environments separate.

To identify the application’s architecture, check its documentation, installer, launcher settings, or vendor support information. You can also inspect the executable with a trusted system or development tool, but do not infer architecture from the name of the Windows folder alone.

Use these rules:

  • For a native 64-bit application, Windows normally provides the 64-bit system copy through System32.
  • For a 32-bit application on 64-bit Windows, Windows normally provides the 32-bit system copy through SysWOW64.
  • An application folder containing its own sxs.dll must be repaired through that application.
  • A system repair should come from Windows servicing, not a manually downloaded file.

6. Review antivirus quarantine

Antivirus software may quarantine a damaged, modified, or falsely detected file. Restoring it without checking the detection can reintroduce malware.

For Microsoft Defender:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Choose Privacy & security on Windows 11, or Update & Security on Windows 10.
  4. Select Windows Security.
  5. Choose Virus & threat protection.
  6. Select Protection history.
  7. Review entries from the time the problem began.
  8. Expand the relevant detection and inspect its path and action.

Restore or allow a file only after confirming that it is a genuine Microsoft-signed file and that the detection is a false positive. If the file was in an application directory, reinstalling the application is usually safer than restoring it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If malware removal preceded the error, run a full security scan. A missing DLL after malware activity is a reason to investigate the system, not simply to copy a replacement into place.

7. Consider a recent update, driver, or system change

If the problem began immediately after a Windows update, driver installation, application installation, or uninstall:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Choose Check for updates.
  4. Install available updates.
  5. Restart Windows.
  6. Test the affected program again.

If a recent driver appears involved:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the device category related to the failure.
  4. Right-click the device.
  5. Choose Properties and open the Driver tab.
  6. Review the driver provider and date.
  7. Use Update Driver only with a verified manufacturer or Windows source.
  8. If the failure began immediately after an update, select Roll Back Driver when that option is available.
  9. Restart Windows and test again.

Driver changes do not normally replace sxs.dll, but a system change can expose an application or activation-context problem. If several programs began failing after the same change, return to Windows servicing and System Restore rather than replacing individual DLLs.

When identifying stale drivers manually across Device Manager, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and show driver issues; its free scan identifies problems, while driver installation through the full version is optional. Use the device manufacturer or Windows Update as the authoritative source, and do not treat a driver scan as a substitute for repairing the affected application.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

8. Use System Restore when the timing is clear

System Restore is useful when a restore point predates the failure and the problem followed a system change.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Create a restore point.
  3. Open the matching Control Panel result.
  4. Select System Restore.
  5. Choose Next.
  6. Select a restore point created before the error began.
  7. Select Scan for affected programs if available.
  8. Confirm the restore point and choose Finish.
  9. Allow Windows to restart.

System Restore normally rolls back system files, registry settings, drivers, updates, and installed programs without removing personal files. It does not replace a damaged application’s personal data or guarantee recovery from malware. If the error remains, repair or reinstall the affected program.

Do not download or register sxs.dll manually

Avoid DLL download websites and search-result “fixers” offering a standalone sxs.dll. Such files can contain malware, have the wrong Windows version, use the wrong architecture, fail signature checks, or leave the actual manifest and component-store problem untouched.

There is no verified current Microsoft “sxs.dll redistributable.” Windows servicing supplies the system component. The safe sources are:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • DISM and SFC built into Windows
  • Windows Update
  • A matching Windows repair source
  • The original application vendor or legitimate game launcher
  • Microsoft’s Visual C++ Redistributable page when sxstrace identifies a VC assembly

Do not run regsvr32 sxs.dll as a general repair. regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose a COM registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer; a Windows runtime and side-by-side loader component normally is not repaired by manual registration. Microsoft explains the limitations in its Regsvr32 documentation.

Manual copying can also create DLL-search-order problems. A copied file may load before the intended Windows component, produce an entry-point error, break only one architecture, or conceal tampering.

If SFC says it repaired the file but the program still fails

The filename may not have been the true cause. Continue in this order:

  1. Restart Windows.
  2. Run the application repair or reinstall it.
  3. Check Event Viewer for the application error.
  4. Run sxstrace.exe and inspect the parsed output.
  5. Check whether the error names a Visual C++ assembly.
  6. Check whether the error path points to an application-local DLL.
  7. Review antivirus Protection history.
  8. If needed, inspect the SFC record in the Windows servicing logs and escalate to a matching repair source or in-place repair installation.

A crash report naming sxs.dll only proves that the process loaded or referenced that Windows library. It does not establish that the library caused the crash.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

FAQ

Is sxs.dll a Windows file?

Yes. sxs.dll, commonly described as Fusion 2.5, is part of Microsoft Windows and supports side-by-side assemblies and activation contexts.

Should I download sxs.dll?

No. Do not use random DLL download sites. Repair Windows with DISM and SFC, or repair the application if the error points to an application folder.

Is sxs.dll part of Visual C++?

Not as a standalone Visual C++ redistributable. A side-by-side error can identify a missing Visual C++ assembly, but install a Visual C++ package only when Event Viewer or sxstrace identifies that dependency.

Why is the file in System32 if my program is 32-bit?

On 64-bit Windows, System32 is normally the native 64-bit system directory. A 32-bit application is redirected to SysWOW64. This naming is historical and does not mean that System32 contains 32-bit files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will regsvr32 sxs.dll fix the error?

Generally, no. regsvr32 is for COM DLL registration and is not a general repair command for Windows runtime components.

What if the file is present but the program still says it is missing?

Check the exact path in the error, inspect Event Viewer, and run sxstrace.exe. The real problem may be an invalid manifest, missing assembly, hash mismatch, private application DLL, or wrong architecture.

When should I reinstall Windows?

Use reinstall or an in-place repair only after DISM, SFC, application repair, tracing, and System Restore have not resolved the problem. If SFC cannot repair protected files and DISM cannot use a matching source, Microsoft’s Windows recovery options provide the appropriate escalation paths.
