What is Syndicate (2012)?
Syndicate is a first-person shooter developed by Starbreeze Studios and published by Electronic Arts. Released in 2012 for PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360, EA described it as a re-imagining of the 1993 cult classic rather than a continuation in the original game’s format. EA announced a North American release on February 21, 2012, and a European release on February 24, 2012. Why does it feel so different from the franchise’s earlier identity?
The central point of friction is also the clearest description of the game’s ambition: Syndicate shifted the series into first-person shooter action. EA’s 2011 announcement explicitly presented the project as an FPS revival, with a new single-player campaign and a distinct co-op mode that drew some missions from the original. Executive producer Jeff Gamon described the goal as serving both modern action-shooter players and fans of the original; that was EA’s stated aim, not proof that every audience embraced the result. That shift offers a grounded way to understand why the game can be called misunderstood, without pretending that audience resistance or a critical consensus has been independently established here. A player approaching it as a faithful return to the older game’s genre and control format may judge it against expectations it was not designed to meet. A fairer reconsideration starts with what the reboot actually attempts: translate a corporate dystopia into a shooter shaped by digital intrusion and accelerated combat.

What is the story and setting?
The game takes place in 2069, when mega-corporations compete for market dominance in a world where corporate power has displaced ordinary government oversight. The player controls Miles Kilo, Eurocorp’s prototype agent, in a plot involving corporate conflict, corruption, and revenge. EA credits science-fiction author Richard Morgan with writing the story. These details come from EA’s launch announcement and EA’s game details.
EA’s launch copy summarized the premise this way: “With no government to question their intentions or actions, mega corporations are at the forefront of this war.” That is promotional framing, but it captures the game’s basic setup: the player operates inside a corporate conflict rather than trying to restore a conventional public order.

How does DART 6 shape the combat?
Kilo’s implanted DART 6 chip is the game’s signature tool. EA says it can slow time, reveal enemies through walls, and breach opponents or digital systems. Those abilities add tactical choices to the shooting, but they are best understood as combat and hacking powers—not evidence of a full stealth or strategy game.
- Slow time: create a brief advantage during a firefight.
- Enhanced vision: see through walls and locate threats.
- Breaches: attack enemies or interact with digital systems through the chip.

What does co-op add?
The online co-op mode is separate from the single-player campaign. EA described it as four-player co-op with nine missions, some re-imagined from the original game. Players take the role of operatives in the Wulf Western syndicate as it competes with rival corporations. It is therefore a distinct mode with its own premise, not simply the campaign played with a squad. EA’s launch announcement and mode overview provide those details.
Who is in the cast?
EA’s February 10, 2012 cast announcement names Rosario Dawson and Brian Cox among the performers playing Eurocorp executives, and identifies Michael Wincott as the voice of Jules Merit. How should you judge it as a reboot?
Separate the question “Is this the old Syndicate?” from “Does this work as a cyberpunk shooter?” The first has a straightforward answer: it changes the format, and EA openly called it a re-imagining. The second depends on how well its shooting, DART 6 abilities, story, and co-op suit an individual player; the product facts alone cannot settle that judgment.
- Consider it on its own terms if a first-person shooter built around time manipulation, enhanced vision, and hacking sounds appealing.
- Be cautious about format expectations if what you want is a direct recreation of the 1993 game’s play structure; this reboot was not presented as one.
- Keep reception claims narrow: the available evidence here does not establish a full critical consensus, audience reaction, or commercial outcome.
That distinction is why “misunderstood” is a useful argument rather than a settled verdict. The format change is documented; the claim that it explains the game’s reception would need broader review and sales evidence.

Can you buy or play it today?
The documented release platforms are PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360. Xbox has an official Syndicate product listing, but the existence of a product page does not establish that the game is currently purchasable in every region, compatible with every modern system, or supported by active co-op matchmaking.
