synisdll.dll Missing: Trace Progressive Touch on Windows 11

The synisdll.dll error usually points to an incomplete or damaged Synaptics touchpad package, not a missing Windows component. synisdll.dll is an old 32-bit Synaptics component associated with Progressive Touch and the Synaptics Pointing Device Driver.

The safest repair is to reinstall the complete touchpad or pointing-device driver for your laptop. Do not download the DLL by itself or copy it into System32.

Which fix applies to you

Use this list before changing anything:

  • The touchpad stopped working after a Windows or driver update: reinstall the laptop manufacturer’s touchpad driver, or roll back the driver.
  • The error appeared after cleanup software, antivirus activity, or an incomplete uninstall: check Windows Security Protection History, then reinstall the complete Synaptics package.
  • The touchpad works but a popup appears during startup: an obsolete Synaptics startup entry may still be requesting the DLL. Repair or remove the old package.
  • The error appears when opening a touchpad control panel or utility: reinstall the Synaptics pointing-device package rather than an isolated DLL.
  • The laptop manufacturer no longer lists the old driver: try Windows Update or Device Manager first. System Restore is another possibility if the problem began recently.
  • The file exists but Windows says a module cannot be found: the named DLL may have a missing dependency, may be the wrong architecture, or may be in the wrong folder.
  • The file was found in a temporary or unusual directory: treat it as suspicious and scan the computer instead of restoring it.

What synisdll.dll is

The file’s recorded description is Install Resource Strings, and its publisher is identified as Synaptics, Inc. Historical Synaptics packages place it alongside touchpad drivers, enhancement utilities, control-panel components, and uninstall-related files.

Progressive Touch is a historical product label, not a universal current installer that applies to every Windows computer. The exact package that installed synisdll.dll cannot be determined from the filename alone.

It is not a standard Windows DLL, Microsoft runtime component, or general-purpose file that belongs in C:WindowsSystem32. Available file records identify it as 32-bit. On 64-bit Windows, that does not mean you should place it in C:WindowsSysWOW64. Application and driver files normally stay in the folder used by the package that installed them.

Common messages include:

  • “The program can’t start because synisdll.dll is missing from your computer.”
  • “There was a problem starting synisdll.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
  • “Error loading synisdll.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
  • “The code execution cannot proceed because synisdll.dll was not found.”
  • “synisdll.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”

The wording depends on the Windows version and the executable requesting the file. “The specified module could not be found” can also mean that a dependency is missing even when synisdll.dll itself is present.

Fix 1: Reinstall the laptop manufacturer’s touchpad package

This is the most likely fix because Synaptics touchpad software is commonly customised and distributed by laptop manufacturers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Identify the laptop model

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type msinfo32.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Note System Manufacturer, System Model, and OS Name.
  5. In the same window, note System Type. It will usually identify a 64-bit or 32-bit installation.

You can also find the model on the laptop’s label or in Settings > System > About.

Download the correct package

  1. Open the laptop manufacturer’s official support page.
  2. Search for the exact model.
  3. Select the Windows edition installed on the computer.
  4. Open the Mouse, Touchpad, Input, or Pointing Device driver category.
  5. Download the Synaptics touchpad package that matches the model and Windows architecture.
  6. Do not choose a package solely because its filename contains synisdll.dll.

If the manufacturer’s page offers several historical packages, start with the one intended for the installed Windows version. A package for another model can install the wrong files and still leave the original error unresolved.

Install it

  1. Close open programs.
  2. Right-click the downloaded installer and choose Run as administrator.
  3. Follow the setup instructions.
  4. Restart Windows, even if the installer does not insist on a restart.
  5. Test the touchpad, its buttons, scrolling, and any touchpad settings panel.

If the error has disappeared and the touchpad works, the repair is complete.

Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the manual work of hunting through model-specific driver pages and guessing which input driver is stale. Its free scan shows what needs attention, while the repair or driver installation is performed by the full version; reinstalling the laptop manufacturer’s Synaptics package remains the definitive fix for this file.

Fix 2: Reinstall the device through Windows Update

Use this route when the OEM site has no suitable package or the downloaded installer fails.

Microsoft’s touchpad guidance recommends Windows Update and Device Manager for updating or reinstalling touchpad drivers: Microsoft touchpad troubleshooting.

Check optional driver updates

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Choose Advanced options.
  4. Select Optional updates.
  5. Expand Driver updates.
  6. Install an available touchpad, HID, mouse, or Synaptics-related driver.
  7. Restart the computer.

Windows may not display the word Synaptics if the driver is delivered under a hardware or OEM name.

Reinstall in Device Manager

  1. Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
  2. Expand Human Interface Devices.
  3. Also expand Mice and other pointing devices.
  4. Look for a Synaptics device, touchpad device, HID-compliant touchpad, or an entry with a warning icon.
  5. Right-click the relevant device and choose Uninstall device.
  6. Confirm the uninstall. If Windows offers a checkbox to remove the driver package, select it only when you intend to remove that package.
  7. Restart Windows.

After the restart, Windows may reinstall the device automatically or obtain a driver through Windows Update. Test the touchpad again.

Roll back a recently updated driver

If the error began immediately after a driver update:

  2. Expand Human Interface Devices or Mice and other pointing devices.
  3. Double-click the touchpad device.
  4. Open the Driver tab.
  5. Select Roll Back Driver if the button is available.
  6. Choose a reason and confirm.
  7. Restart Windows.

If rollback is unavailable, install the appropriate OEM package instead.

Fix 3: Repair or reinstall the Synaptics program

If Synaptics software appears in the installed-program list, repair it before removing anything manually.

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  2. Search for Synaptics, Touchpad, or Pointing Device.
  3. Select the program’s three-dot menu.
  4. Choose Advanced options if available.
  5. Select Repair.
  6. Restart Windows and test the original application or control panel.

On older Windows installations:

  1. Open Control Panel.
  2. Select Programs > Programs and Features.
  3. Select the Synaptics pointing-device entry.
  4. Choose Repair or Change if offered.
  5. If repair is unavailable, uninstall the package.
  6. Restart the computer.
  7. Install the correct touchpad package from the laptop manufacturer’s support page.

Do not delete individual DLLs or random registry values first. An uninstall entry may call a historical utility through rundll32.exe, but that does not mean you should run the DLL manually.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine

A security product may have removed or quarantined the file. This can happen after a detection, a cleanup operation, or a change to the installed package.

  1. Open Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Choose Protection history.
  4. Look for an entry involving synisdll.dll.
  5. Expand the entry and inspect its original path, detection name, and action.
  6. Compare the path with the expected Synaptics installation directory.
  7. Check whether the file came from the signed OEM installer you downloaded.

Only restore or allow the file when all of these are trustworthy:

  • It came from the original laptop manufacturer’s installer.
  • Its location is consistent with the Synaptics package.
  • The file has a valid vendor signature where one is expected.
  • A current security scan does not identify it as malicious.

Microsoft explains that restoring a quarantined file can cause Defender to detect it again until it is explicitly allowed: Microsoft Protection History.

Do not restore a copy found in a temporary download folder, a user-writable folder, or an unexpected directory merely because the name is synisdll.dll. Run a full scan, or use a Defender Offline scan, through Microsoft’s virus and threat protection guidance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you are uncertain, reinstall the complete signed OEM package instead of allowing the quarantined copy.

Fix 5: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC

SFC and DISM are useful when Windows itself is damaged, but they normally do not recreate a third-party Synaptics DLL removed from its application directory.

Use them when you also see damaged Windows features, unexplained system errors, failed updates, or several unrelated system files reporting corruption.

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
  3. Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
  4. Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for it to finish. This can take time.
  2. Then run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
  2. Restart Windows.

Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC: Microsoft system file checker instructions.

Outbyte PC Repair can make the manual process less repetitive by showing what its free scan finds instead of leaving you to repeat SFC and DISM without knowing what changed. Repair actions are performed by the full version, and reinstalling the Synaptics package is still the correct fix when that package is the damaged component.

If DISM or SFC reports errors, restart and run the commands again once. If Windows reports that it could not repair some files but synisdll.dll remains missing, return to the OEM driver reinstall rather than copying a DLL manually.

Fix 6: Use System Restore for a recent change

System Restore can help when the file disappeared after a driver update, cleanup operation, or software removal and a restore point exists from before that event.

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type:
rstrui.exe
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Select Next.
  3. Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
  4. Select Scan for affected programs if available.
  5. Review the changes.
  6. Select Next > Finish.

System Restore does not normally remove personal documents, but it can reverse drivers and installed programs. Microsoft describes the procedure here: Microsoft System Restore.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

After restoration, prevent the same driver or cleanup action from immediately removing the package again. If the touchpad driver is still old, obtain the correct OEM update.

Why downloading the DLL alone is unsafe

Do not use random DLL download sites as the first repair. An isolated file can have:

  • The wrong version for the installed Synaptics package.
  • The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.
  • Missing dependent files.
  • A damaged or modified binary.
  • Malware using the same filename.
  • No matching installer or uninstall registration.

Copying it to System32 or SysWOW64 can also create a second problem by putting an application component in a Windows directory where the requesting program does not expect it.

The safe sources are the laptop manufacturer’s official support page, Windows Update, and Device Manager. These methods select a package for the hardware and Windows installation instead of guessing from a filename.

Why regsvr32 usually does not apply

regsvr32 is for registering DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general missing-DLL repair command.

The recorded role of synisdll.dll is Install Resource Strings, and there is no verified reason to register it manually. Running commands such as these is therefore unlikely to repair the touchpad package:

regsvr32 synisdll.dll

On 64-bit Windows, choosing between the 32-bit and 64-bit copies of regsvr32 also does not solve a missing package or dependency. Microsoft documents the command’s purpose and syntax here: Microsoft regsvr32 documentation.

Check the requesting program and path

When reinstalling the driver does not help, identify what is actually requesting the file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Record the complete error message.
  2. Note whether it appears during startup, sign-in, opening a touchpad settings panel, or launching another program.
  3. Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
  4. Select Startup apps.
  5. Look for an old Synaptics, pointing-device, or touchpad entry.
  6. Right-click it and choose Open file location if available.
  7. Record the executable name and folder.
  8. Check Event Viewer > Windows Logs > Application for an error at the same time.

If the touchpad works and only a startup popup remains, the likely cause is stale software registration from an incomplete uninstall. Remove the obsolete Synaptics program through Settings > Apps or Control Panel > Programs and Features, then restart.

Do not disable or delete registry entries at random. The executable requesting the DLL determines which package needs repair.

If the manufacturer no longer offers the driver

Use these steps in order:

  1. Check Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates > Driver updates.
  2. Reinstall the device through Device Manager.
  3. Check the manufacturer’s support page for an archived package for the exact model.
  4. Use System Restore if a suitable restore point predates the removal.
  5. If the touchpad works with a Microsoft-provided driver, remove obsolete Synaptics utilities rather than forcing the historical package back onto Windows.

An old Progressive Touch component may no longer be necessary if the current touchpad driver provides the required functionality.

Security checks for a genuine file

A filename does not prove authenticity. Investigate the copy’s:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Full file path.
  • Digital signature and stated publisher.
  • Source installer.
  • Relationship to the laptop model and installed driver.
  • Detection status in Windows Security.

A Synaptics-associated copy should normally be connected to the installed pointing-device package, not sitting in a temporary download location or an unrelated application folder. If the signature is missing, the path is unusual, or antivirus identifies the file, quarantine it and scan the system. Then reinstall from the official OEM source.

Prevention

  • Keep the laptop’s touchpad driver matched to the exact model.
  • Prefer Windows Update, Device Manager, and the manufacturer’s support page.
  • Save the original OEM installer before removing an old driver.
  • Review antivirus quarantine before restoring any DLL.
  • Avoid registry cleaners and isolated DLL replacement.
  • Create a restore point before changing an old input-device package.
  • Remove obsolete Synaptics utilities when the current touchpad driver no longer depends on them.

FAQ

Is synisdll.dll part of Windows?

No reliable evidence identifies it as a standard Windows component. It is associated with Synaptics pointing-device software and Progressive Touch.

Is synisdll.dll related to a Synaptics touchpad?

Yes. It is an old component associated with Synaptics touchpad and pointing-device packages, although the filename alone cannot identify the exact package or model.

Should I reinstall Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?

Not for this file specifically. Those runtimes are not identified as the source package for synisdll.dll. Reinstall them only when the program separately reports a matching runtime error.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I run SFC and DISM?

Run DISM followed by SFC when Windows components appear corrupted. Do not expect them to restore a third-party Synaptics DLL removed from its application folder.

Does a 32-bit DLL belong in SysWOW64?

Not automatically. A 32-bit application DLL normally stays with the application or driver package that installed it.

What if the touchpad works?

If only a startup message remains, repair or uninstall the obsolete Synaptics software through the normal Apps or Programs and Features interface. The touchpad may already be using a newer driver.

What information should I collect if the error remains?

Record the laptop model, Windows edition and architecture, complete error text, requesting executable, full file path, touchpad driver version, and any related Event Viewer application error.
