outlwvw.dll Missing: Restore Outlook Today Without DLL Downloads

outlwvw.dll is a Microsoft Outlook file, not a normal Windows system DLL. If outlwvw.dll is missing, damaged, or cannot be loaded, repair the installed Office product instead of downloading a replacement and copying it into System32.

The file is associated mainly with classic Outlook’s Outlook Today and web-style folder views. Outlook may otherwise open normally while Outlook Today shows errors such as “Class not registered,” “Cannot display the folder,” or a script error.

What is outlwvw.dll?

outlwvw.dll has the internal description Outlook Web Views. It is part of Microsoft Office and classic Microsoft Outlook, where it supplies resources and functionality used by Outlook Today and related web-view pages.

Microsoft Outlook update manifests list outlwvw.dll among Outlook binaries, including Outlook 2013 files. You can verify that association in Microsoft’s Outlook 2013 update file manifest.

It is not:

  • A Windows component that normally belongs in C:WindowsSystem32
  • A Visual C++ Redistributable file
  • A DirectX file
  • A .NET runtime file
  • A general-purpose DLL for games and unrelated applications

Historical Office installations have used versions such as these:

Architecture Historical version Approximate size
32-bit 10.0.2625.0 0.3 MB
32-bit 9.0.0.2416 0.29 MB
32-bit 11.0.6565.0 0.27 MB
32-bit 11.0.8161.0 0.27 MB

Those values identify historical file records, not universal requirements for every Outlook installation. The correct file depends on the Office generation, language, update level, installation technology, and architecture.

Typical locations may resemble:

C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOffice121033outlwvw.dll
C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOffice101033outlwvw.dll
C:Program Files (x86)Microsoft OfficerootOffice161033OUTLWVW.DLL

The folder can differ on your computer. Do not use one of these examples as a reason to copy a file there manually.

Why Outlook Today fails

Classic Outlook can load its main executable while failing to load a supporting Office DLL. When Outlook Today requests its web-view resources, a missing or damaged outlwvw.dll can prevent the page from being created.

Microsoft’s archived Outlook documentation records errors including:

  • “An error has occurred in the script on this page.”
  • “Error: Class not registered.”
  • “URL: Outlook Today”

The documented causes include a missing or damaged Outlwvw.dll and damaged related registry settings.

Other symptoms can include:

  • “Cannot display the folder” when Outlook Today is selected
  • A message saying the file could not be loaded
  • A missing outlook.htm or Outlook Today resource path
  • A “not designed to run on Windows” error after a bad replacement or architecture mismatch

The exact wording varies. A message containing outlwvw.dll does not by itself prove that Windows is missing a system file.

First fix: repair Microsoft Office

Repair is the safest and most likely solution because it restores the matching Office files, registry settings, language resources, and installation metadata together.

Before starting, close Outlook and every other Office application.

Repair Microsoft 365 or Click-to-Run Office

On Windows 11:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Installed apps.
  3. Find Microsoft 365, Microsoft Office, or the relevant Office product.
  4. Select the three-dot menu beside it.
  5. Choose Modify.
  6. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  7. Select Quick Repair.
  8. Click Repair and wait for the process to finish.
  9. Restart Windows.
  10. Open classic Outlook and select Outlook Today again.

On Windows 10:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Apps & features.
  4. Select your Microsoft 365 or Office installation.
  5. Choose Modify.
  6. Select Quick Repair.
  7. Click Repair.
  8. Restart Windows when it finishes.

Quick Repair is usually the right first attempt because it is faster and normally does not require downloading the complete Office installation.

If Outlook Today still fails, repeat the steps and choose:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Online Repair
  2. Repair
  3. Sign in if Microsoft requests your account
  4. Wait for Office to reinstall its components
  5. Restart Windows
  6. Test Outlook again

Online Repair is more complete than Quick Repair. It can replace a damaged Office installation, so allow time for Office applications to be repaired and possibly reconfigured.

Microsoft’s current instructions are in Repair an Office application.

Repair an older MSI-based Office installation

Some older perpetual Office versions use the traditional Windows Installer system rather than Click-to-Run.

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type:

text
appwiz.cpl

  1. Press Enter.
  2. Select the Microsoft Office entry.
  3. Click Change.
  4. Choose Repair.
  5. Follow the prompts.
  6. Restart Windows.
  7. Test Outlook Today.

If the Office entry offers Online Repair and Quick Repair, it is using a newer repair interface. If it presents a traditional setup wizard, follow that wizard’s repair option.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to tell whether repair worked

Repair worked if:

  • Outlook Today opens without the script or class-registration error
  • The folder no longer reports that it cannot be displayed
  • Outlook no longer reports that outlwvw.dll cannot be loaded
  • The file is restored inside the Office installation directory
  • Other Office files also behave normally

Do not judge success only by whether a file search finds the DLL. A file in the wrong Office folder, language directory, or architecture is not a valid repair.

Update Office after repairing it

A damaged or incomplete update can leave Outlook files inconsistent. After Office repair:

  1. Open classic Outlook or another Office application.
  2. Select File.
  3. Select Account or Office Account.
  4. Select Update Options.
  5. Choose Update Now.
  6. Wait for the update process to finish.
  7. Restart Windows.
  8. Test Outlook Today.

If Update Options is missing, your organization may control Office updates, or the installation may use a different management method. Contact the administrator rather than downloading an Outlook update from an unofficial source.

Microsoft’s instructions are available in How to update Microsoft 365 or Office for Windows.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reinstall Office if repair cannot restore the file

Use a reinstall when:

  • Quick Repair and Online Repair both fail
  • The Office installation is incomplete
  • Office files are repeatedly disappearing
  • The installed product cannot update
  • The error began after an interrupted Office upgrade
  • The file exists but produces a compatibility or corruption error

First identify the Office edition and architecture:

  1. Open Outlook or another Office application if possible.
  2. Select File > Account.
  3. Look for the product name and version information.
  4. Select About Outlook if available.
  5. Note whether the installation is 32-bit or 64-bit.

If Outlook will not open, check Settings > Apps > Installed apps or Control Panel > Programs and Features for the Office product name.

Uninstall Office through its normal Windows uninstall entry, restart Windows, and reinstall the same edition from Microsoft’s official Office installation source. Do not mix a DLL from Office 2007 with Office 2013, Office 2016, or Microsoft 365. Do not install a 32-bit replacement into a 64-bit Office installation, or the reverse.

After reinstalling:

  1. Start Outlook.
  2. Install available Office updates.
  3. Restart Windows.
  4. Open Outlook Today.
  5. Recreate or test your Outlook profile only if the file problem has been resolved.

Check Microsoft Defender quarantine

Security software can remove or quarantine an Office file. Do not assume that every detection is a false positive, but do check the event before reinstalling repeatedly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Look for a detection involving outlwvw.dll or the Office installation folder.
  5. Expand the detection to view its location and classification.
  6. Confirm whether the file was actually inside your genuine Microsoft Office directory.

Restore or allow the file only when:

  • The file belongs to the installed Microsoft Office product
  • The detection is identified as a false positive
  • Your security software provides enough information to support that conclusion
  • The Office installation itself is legitimate and current

If the detection is suspicious, leave the file quarantined and run a full security scan. Then repair or reinstall Office from Microsoft rather than restoring an untrusted copy.

If the file repeatedly disappears after repair, inspect Protection History, other antivirus logs, disk health, cleanup utilities, and possible malware. Repeatedly downloading the DLL does not solve the underlying removal.

Check Office architecture before changing files

Windows can be 64-bit while Office is 32-bit. That is normal. Office architecture and Windows architecture are separate choices.

A 32-bit Outlook installation needs the matching 32-bit Office files. A 64-bit Outlook installation needs matching 64-bit Office files. The file name alone does not prove that two copies are interchangeable.

Architecture problems can cause:

  • “The application was unable to start correctly”
  • “Not designed to run on Windows”
  • A DLL load failure after manual replacement
  • Outlook opening but Outlook Today failing
  • Office repair appearing to complete without fixing the error

The safe solution is to repair the installed Office product or reinstall the correct Office edition. Do not copy a DLL from another computer unless the complete Office installation is being restored through an approved Microsoft deployment process.

Test Outlook in Safe Mode

If Outlook works except for Outlook Today, the problem may involve an add-in, profile setting, or Outlook Today configuration rather than a missing file.

  1. Close Outlook.
  2. Press Windows key + R.
  3. Type:

text
outlook.exe /safe

  1. Press Enter.
  2. Choose the Outlook profile if prompted.
  3. Open Outlook Today.

If Outlook Today works in Safe Mode:

  1. Close Outlook.
  2. Start Outlook normally.
  3. Select File > Options.
  4. Select Add-ins.
  5. At the bottom, set Manage to COM Add-ins.
  6. Click Go.
  7. Clear the check box for each nonessential add-in.
  8. Restart Outlook and test after each change.

A new Outlook profile can help when the existing profile is damaged:

  1. Close Outlook.
  2. Open Control Panel.
  3. Set View by to Small icons or Large icons.
  4. Open Mail.
  5. Select Show Profiles.
  6. Select Add.
  7. Create a new profile.
  8. Configure the account.
  9. Select Prompt for a profile to be used or set the new profile as the default.
  10. Start Outlook and test Outlook Today.

A new profile cannot replace a missing Office binary. Repair Office first if the error specifically names outlwvw.dll.

Repair broader Windows corruption only when appropriate

outlwvw.dll belongs to Office, so System File Checker is not a guaranteed way to restore it. Use Windows component repair when other Windows files are also failing, Windows features are behaving unusually, or the problem affects more than Outlook.

Open an elevated Command Prompt:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Approve the prompt.
  6. Run:

text
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

  1. Wait for it to complete.
  2. Then run:

text
sfc /scannow

  1. Restart Windows.
  2. Test Outlook.

DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC checks protected Windows files. Neither command should be presented as a specific guaranteed repair for an Office-owned DLL.

Repeating these commands without knowing what changed makes troubleshooting harder. Outbyte PC Repair can show a free scan of broader Windows problems, while repair actions are handled by the full version; it is optional, and Office repair remains the direct fix for this file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If DISM or SFC reports errors, record the exact result. If both complete successfully but Outlook still reports the same DLL error, return to Office Repair or reinstall Office.

What about drivers and Device Manager?

A graphics, printer, or storage driver is not a normal cause of a missing Outlook-owned outlwvw.dll. Do not update random drivers as the first response.

Check Device Manager only when you also see broader hardware symptoms:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the relevant category.
  4. Look for a warning icon.
  5. Right-click the affected device.
  6. Select Properties.
  7. Review the General and Driver tabs.
  8. Use Update driver only when the device itself has a problem.
  9. Restart Windows and test again.

Hunting through dozens of driver packages is unnecessary when the error is limited to classic Outlook. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers, but its free scan only identifies issues and the full version performs the driver installation; it is not required to repair outlwvw.dll.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use System Restore as a fallback

System Restore is reasonable when the error began immediately after an Office update, application installation, driver change, or other system modification and Office repair did not help.

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type:

text
rstrui.exe

  1. Press Enter.
  2. Select Next.
  3. Choose a restore point from before the problem began.
  4. Select Scan for affected programs if available.
  5. Review the results.
  6. Select Next, then Finish.
  7. Allow Windows to restart.

System Restore rolls back system settings and installed programs, but it does not normally remove personal documents. It is not the first fix for a damaged Office installation and may not restore a missing Office file. If it fails, reinstall the same Office edition from Microsoft.

What not to do

Do not download outlwvw.dll from a random DLL site

A downloaded DLL can contain malware, belong to the wrong Office generation, use the wrong language resources, or have the wrong architecture. Even a genuine-looking file may not match the rest of the Office installation.

Use Office Repair, Office Update, or an official Microsoft reinstall instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not copy it into System32 or SysWOW64

Those folders hold Windows system components. outlwvw.dll is Office content and normally belongs in an Office version and language directory.

Copying it into a Windows folder can create a second, mismatched copy that Outlook does not use and other programs might attempt to load.

Do not run regsvr32 as a routine fix

regsvr32 is for DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. There is no authoritative basis for treating outlwvw.dll as a DLL that users should manually register.

Running commands such as these is not a safe default:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
regsvr32 outlwvw.dll
regsvr32 C:pathtooutlwvw.dll

A registration error does not prove that the file is missing, and successful registration would not repair a wrong-version or corrupted Office installation. Microsoft explains the command’s purpose in its regsvr32 documentation.

Do not install unrelated runtimes

Installing Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET is not a supported fix for an Office-owned outlwvw.dll error unless the exact message identifies a separate missing dependency. Repair Office instead.

Do not use Windows Features for this file

Turning on .NET Framework, legacy components, or other Windows Features does not restore an Office DLL. Use Windows Features only when a separate application explicitly requires that Windows component.

Frequently asked questions

Is outlwvw.dll a Windows file?

No. Evidence identifies it as a Microsoft Office and classic Outlook component. It should not normally be placed in System32 or SysWOW64.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which Office versions use it?

Historical Office generations used it, and Microsoft Outlook update manifests list it among Outlook files. The exact file and location vary by Office generation, language, installation technology, update level, and architecture.

Why does Outlook open if the DLL is missing?

Outlook consists of many components. The main program can start while a specific Outlook Today or web-view component fails when that page is requested.

Should I register outlwvw.dll?

Usually no. regsvr32 is not a routine repair for this file. Repair Office so its files and related settings are restored together.

Will SFC restore outlwvw.dll?

Not reliably. SFC repairs protected Windows files, while outlwvw.dll is an Office file. Use SFC and DISM for broader Windows corruption, then repair or reinstall Office for this specific problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if Outlook works except for Outlook Today?

Test outlook.exe /safe, disable add-ins, and try a new profile if necessary. Also run Office Repair because Outlook Today can fail when the DLL or its related settings are damaged.

When should I reinstall Office?

Reinstall when Quick Repair, Online Repair, and Office Update do not restore the correct component, or when the installation is incomplete, repeatedly damaged, or unable to update.

What information should I record before asking for help?

Record the exact error text, Office edition and build, 32-bit or 64-bit architecture, installation type, Office file path, Defender Protection History result, and the outcome of Quick Repair and Online Repair. This distinguishes an Office installation problem from a profile, security, or broader Windows issue.
