As of October 7, 2026, Epic Games Store lists System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster as free for Windows, with the displayed offer ending October 8 at 11:00 PM in the store’s local time. Check Epic’s live listing for your region and its current claim deadline. This is Nightdive Studios’ 2025 remaster, published by Atari—not the original 1999 release.
Yes, you can play the remaster with a controller. Nightdive added gamepad-focused navigation and control options that make the old PC game more approachable from a couch, though they do not make a controller the best choice for every player.
Can you play System Shock 2 with a controller?
Yes. Epic advertises optimized controller support for the Windows version of System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster. Nightdive’s description of the remaster explains how the gamepad controls work, including ways to navigate the PDA, reach quick-access controls, and adjust aiming. A controller is optional; the sources do not say it is required.
The giveaway listing identifies Nightdive Studios as developer, Atari as publisher, and Windows as the platform. The claim window is time-sensitive: Epic displayed an end time of October 8, 2026, at 11:00 PM in the store’s local time when checked on October 7. Offers may vary by region or change, so rely on the live listing rather than assuming that deadline applies everywhere.
#1 Best Overall
- Compatible with Windows and Android.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)

- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
What changed in the remaster’s controller scheme?
Nightdive describes several changes intended to make the game’s menus and controls work naturally with a gamepad:
- PDA and hacking: Directional-pad and face-button navigation lets players move through PDA screens and hacking tools.
- Interface access: Triggers cycle PDA interfaces; bumpers switch tabs and quick-access bars.
- Aiming and leaning: Aim slowing offers finer adjustment, while a single lean toggle uses the control stick to choose the direction.
- Remapping: Nearly every control can be remapped, with analog-stick looking and walking as the stated exceptions.
Nightdive developer Lexi Mayfield told Xbox Wire: “You can also slow down your aim for the sake of accuracy, and instead of multiple lean buttons there’s now a single lean toggle that uses the control stick for the lean direction.” Read the March 20, 2025 Xbox Wire interview for Nightdive’s account of the remaster’s design.

How does that compare with the original PC controls?
The original game’s manual documents a keyboard-oriented setup, with separate keys for tasks such as opening the map and inventory, quicksaving, and selecting weapons. Nightdive has also said the original game and engine were designed for late-1990s PCs with mouse and keyboard. The remaster’s dedicated menu navigation, triggers, bumpers, and remapping are a meaningful adaptation—not evidence that the original controls were universally bad or that a gamepad is now better for everyone.
The two input styles have different trade-offs. Mouse aiming may suit players who prioritize direct precision; a controller offers stick-based movement and a control scheme built around gamepad access to menus and quickbars. Nightdive’s feature descriptions do not establish a measured performance winner, and individual comfort matters.

What should you use to play?
If you already own a compatible PC game controller, the remaster advertises controller support and Nightdive documents the controls. There is no evidence here that a particular model is required or that any specific controller has been tested, so choose based on the device and input style you prefer. Mouse and keyboard remain a reasonable option, especially if that is how you want to handle aiming and the game’s interface.
System Shock 2 is a science-fiction horror role-playing game set aboard a starship; Nightdive’s product page also describes cross-play co-op and mod support. See Nightdive’s game page for its overview. For console-specific context, including DualShock 4 and DualSense support, consult the PlayStation.Blog interview; those controller names should not be taken as a compatibility promise for every PC setup. The original game manual is useful for its historical keyboard bindings, not as a guide to the remaster’s current controls.
