Take-Two CEO on Nintendo Switch 2: “I Never Count Nintendo Out”

Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick expressed confidence in Nintendo’s Switch successor, while identifying Civilization VII—not a broader lineup—as the reported backward-compatibility example.

Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick’s reported answer when asked about Nintendo’s Switch successor was simple: “I never count Nintendo out.” The remark, reported by GamingBolt on November 11, 2024, signals confidence in Nintendo’s prospects—not a commitment to bring Take-Two’s full game catalogue to the new console.

What did Strauss Zelnick say about Nintendo Switch 2?

GamingBolt reported that Zelnick made the comment in an interview with GamesIndustry after being asked about the Switch successor. His answer was: “I never count Nintendo out.” GamingBolt’s November 11, 2024 report presents the line as a brief expression of confidence in Nintendo, not an announcement about Take-Two’s platform plans.

Why did backward compatibility matter to Take-Two?

Zelnick said backward compatibility could benefit the company’s catalogue: “Backward compatibility is good for our catalogue, and we think we have the highest selling catalogue per SKU in the business.” That is Zelnick’s characterization; GamingBolt’s report gives no sales figures, measurement period, methodology, or comparison set to independently establish the superlative.

He also acknowledged that games compete for players’ attention even when they are from the same publisher: “You’re always competing with everything, and you’re competing with yourself.” In that view, older games remain potential competitors for attention, but access to them on a successor platform can also keep a catalogue available to players.

Which Take-Two games did the report connect to the successor?

The report specifically said Civilization VII, which was releasing for the original Nintendo Switch, would be playable on the successor through backward compatibility. That is the concrete game and compatibility detail in the account; it does not amount to confirmation of a separate Switch 2 edition.

GamingBolt also listed Borderlands 4, Mafia: The Old Country, and Grand Theft Auto 6 among Take-Two-label games planned for release in 2025. Their appearance in that list does not establish that any of them was planned for Switch 2.

What the comment does—and does not—confirm

  • Confirmed in the report: Zelnick said, “I never count Nintendo out,” when asked about the Switch successor.
  • Stated as his view: Backward compatibility is good for Take-Two’s catalogue, and games compete with one another for players’ attention.
  • Named compatibility example: The report said the Switch version of Civilization VII would be playable on the successor.
  • Not established: A broader Switch 2 game lineup, platform commitments for the other titles mentioned, or independent data backing the catalogue-sales-per-SKU claim.

The account is GamingBolt’s report of a GamesIndustry interview, rather than an original interview transcript. It documents what Zelnick was reported to have said in November 2024; it does not establish current Switch 2 availability, specifications, or game compatibility beyond the specific Civilization VII point reported at the time.
