The timing prompted concern about generative AI’s implications for game companies, but the available reporting does not establish that Project Genie alone caused the decline.
What happened to Take-Two stock on January 30, 2026?
Notebookcheck reported that Take-Two shares fell more than 11% from their opening price at one point during trading on January 30, 2026. The outlet also said the shares were then trading lower than after Take-Two announced a delay to Grand Theft Auto VI in November 2025. This is a historical report of an intraday move, not a current quote or a verified account of where the stock stands today. Notebookcheck’s January 30 report also described declines among other gaming-related companies.
Did Project Genie cause the share-price drop?
Project Genie’s debut and the reported decline happened close together, and Notebookcheck framed investor concern about the tool as part of the market story. That establishes a contemporaneous interpretation, not proof of sole or direct causation. The reporting does not isolate Genie’s effect from other market factors, nor does it show that every investor reacted for the same reason. The safest conclusion is that the debut coincided with a steep reported drop and became a focus of concern—not that it has been demonstrated to be the only cause. TechSpot’s February 4, 2026 report likewise covered the market reaction alongside Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick’s comments about AI.
How this compares with the GTA VI delay
Take-Two’s November 6, 2025 fiscal second-quarter release announced that Rockstar Games planned to release Grand Theft Auto VI on November 19, 2026. The January 30, 2026 stock story compared the reported share-price level with the level following that earlier delay; the two events are distinct, and the comparison does not show that they had the same cause or market effect. The November date is the plan stated in that release, not a guarantee that no subsequent schedule change occurred. Take-Two’s release contains the company’s announcement.

What Project Genie is—and what it is not
Google DeepMind describes Project Genie as an experimental research prototype for creating and exploring generated worlds. Its current Genie 3 page says the system can support real-time interaction at 20–24 frames per second and render at 720p. Those are Google’s stated capabilities for Genie 3 on a page accessed October 8, 2026; they should not be treated as independently measured launch specifications for the January 2026 debut. Google DeepMind’s Genie page also outlines important constraints:
- Its action space is limited.
- Geographic accuracy can be imperfect.
- Text rendering has limitations.
- Sessions last a few minutes rather than hours.
These characteristics describe an experimental world-generation and exploration prototype, not evidence of a complete commercial game engine or a drop-in replacement for production game-development tools. Interacting with a generated world is not the same as building, polishing, testing, and shipping a consistent full-length game.

In a February 4, 2026 report, TechSpot attributed this statement to Zelnick in response to questions following Project Genie’s announcement: “specifically with regards to GTA 6, generative AI has zero part in what Rockstar Games is building.” That is an executive’s reported comment, not an independent audit of every tool or production process used to make the game. It should be read as Zelnick’s stated position about GTA VI, rather than as a verified technical inventory.
