Tanglewood critic reviews of the 2026 season are mixed by program, not reducible to one verdict. Critics praised performances by the Boston Symphony Orchestra and individual artists, while raising different concerns about institutional tensions and the ambitions of Yo-Yo Ma’s “We the People” residency. Bachtrack’s index displayed 41 English-language Tanglewood Festival reviews, but that is a listing count—not a rating or evidence of consensus.

What are critics saying about Tanglewood?

The available Tanglewood concert reviews focus on distinct programs rather than a single season-wide assessment. A.Z. Madonna’s review of the July 10–12 concerts in The Boston Globe praised the BSO’s playing and several soloists while placing the performances against reported organizational tensions. A separate Globe review of Yo-Yo Ma’s residency found intriguing programming but judged that its broad ambitions sometimes weighed down the execution.

These are different critical questions: how well musicians performed, whether a program held together, and how the institution’s circumstances shaped the experience. The reviews should be read on those terms, not combined into a ranking.

Reviews of notable 2026 programs

July 10–12: BSO concerts amid institutional tension

In her review for The Boston Globe, A.Z. Madonna described a strong musical weekend set against reported backstage tensions. She wrote that “to hear this weekend’s three concerts, you’d never know about the volcano of intrigue rumbling backstage.” That line is Madonna’s characterization of the contrast between the performances and the institution’s reported situation—not a general assessment of Tanglewood.

Madonna praised the playing of the orchestra and performances by Seong-Jin Cho, Emanuel Ax, and Eric Lu. She also noted individual qualifications, including a less successful vocal moment. Her review therefore offers both an account of musical strengths and a reminder that a critic may distinguish what happened onstage from what was unfolding around the organization.

August 11: Yo-Yo Ma’s “We the People” residency

The Boston Globe framed its August 11 review of the residency as a case of intriguing programs stumbling under the weight of all-encompassing ambitions. The accessible review points to Jon Batiste’s “American Symphony” and Julia Wolfe’s “Liberty Bell” as highlights. Its criticism concerns the residency’s scope and execution; it is not a blanket judgment on every event or performer involved.

Festival of Contemporary Music: Salonen’s programs

Michael J. Moran’s In The Spotlight coverage concerns Festival of Contemporary Music concerts on July 23 and 27, directed by Esa-Pekka Salonen. The available account describes a program that highlighted Salonen’s influences, musical friends, and younger composers he has championed. It also notes that he introduced the opening program with personal memories of recently deceased composers. This account supports those points about the program’s framing, but not a broader claim about its reception.

How much review coverage is there?

Bachtrack’s Tanglewood Festival index displayed 41 English-language reviews when indexed in 2026. That figure describes the number of listings shown, not how many critics agreed, whether reviews were positive, or how the whole season was received. The index highlighted coverage including Cameron Kelsall’s August 22 review of a Dvořák program, Kevin Wells’s August 9 review of Yo-Yo Ma’s “We the People” program, and Edward Sava-Segal’s July 31 review featuring Esa-Pekka Salonen and Yefim Bronfman.

The available reviews provide a guide to several programs, not an exhaustive record of Tanglewood criticism across years or a complete synthesis of every 2026 event.

Why the reviews cover different kinds of events

Tanglewood is the Boston Symphony Orchestra’s music and learning campus and summer home in Lenox, Massachusetts. The BSO’s January 29, 2026 season announcement said the season opened in late June and continued toward Labor Day weekend. Its lineup ranged beyond standard orchestral concerts to include the Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra, Boston Pops, a Festival of Contemporary Music directed by Salonen, Ma’s artist-led residency, Laurie Anderson events, popular concerts, and learning programs.

That range helps explain why one review may focus on orchestral execution, another on the shape of a multi-event residency, and another on contemporary music and a guest conductor’s artistic influences. Andris Nelsons, the BSO’s music director and Tanglewood’s head of conducting, called the Berkshires “the perfect setting for world-class music-making” in the season announcement; that is the institution’s own framing, distinct from critics’ assessments.

How to read Tanglewood concert reviews

  • Check the program and format. A standard orchestral concert, contemporary-music event, artist-led residency, and popular concert ask different things of performers and audiences.
  • Separate performance from programming. A critic can praise musicians while finding a larger program overextended, or describe a strong event without endorsing the institution’s broader context.
  • Keep attribution attached. Madonna’s account of the July weekend and the Globe’s assessment of Ma’s residency are specific critics’ or publication’s judgments, not a universal consensus.
  • Use indexes as discovery tools. A review count can help locate coverage; it cannot stand in for reading the reviews or measuring their tone.
