In the days before the Nintendo Switch 2 launched on June 5, 2025, customers reported that Target and Walmart had canceled some preorders. Neither the cited coverage nor the retailers established a verified cancellation total or a definitive cause. Target did announce limited in-store launch stock, but its plan called for queues and tickets—not disorderly crowds. These are historical launch-week details, not current stock information.

What happened to the preorders?

Gizmodo reported on June 3 that customers said Target and Walmart had canceled Switch 2 preorders shortly before launch. One Walmart customer said an initial email blamed a card issue; the customer later said support referred to a large number of orders. Gizmodo also reported an earlier Target cancellation. Kotaku had described customer reports of cancellations at both retailers on June 2.

Those accounts document customer claims, not a retailer-wide cancellation announcement. The cited coverage did not establish how many orders were canceled, and it did not confirm a single cause. Overselling, supply constraints, tariff-related delays and payment processing appeared as possible explanations, not proven reasons for the cancellations. (Gizmodo; Kotaku)

What did Target and Walmart plan for June 5?

The headline’s “mob stores” phrasing overstates what retailers announced. Target described a limited-stock, managed in-store process; Walmart’s reported plans also depended on location and inventory.

What to do if your preorder was canceled

  1. Read the cancellation notice. Check whether it identifies a payment or account issue and whether it gives instructions for correcting it.
  2. Check your order status through the retailer. Use the retailer’s official account or support channel to confirm whether the order is canceled and ask what, if anything, can be done to resolve it.
  3. Do not assume store stock is reserved for canceled orders. Target’s announcement described limited launch inventory and its own queue-and-ticket process; it did not promise replacement consoles for customers whose preorders were canceled.
  4. Treat launch-week availability as historical. The June 5 and June 6, 2025 arrangements do not indicate what either retailer has in stock now.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
