Tarkir: Dragonstorm introduced five ready-to-play, 100-card Commander decks, each built around one of Tarkir’s three-color clans. They offer fresh starting points for players choosing among Abzan, Jeskai, Sultai, Mardu, and Temur identities—but Wizards’ design goals and product announcement do not establish that the decks improved Commander performance or revived the format.
What are the Tarkir: Dragonstorm Commander decks?
Wizards of the Coast announced five clan-themed Commander preconstructed decks for Tarkir: Dragonstorm. Each is a ready-to-play 100-card deck, with new-to-Magic cards and reprints. The official product description also lists two foil borderless legendary creatures, ten double-sided tokens, a Collector Booster Sample Pack, and a deck box in each product. The collecting guide identifies the two foil borderless cards as mythic rare creatures and says each deck contains eight rare new-to-Magic cards in the default frame.
| Deck | Color identity | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Abzan Armor | White, black, green | Wizards’ design discussion describes Abzan as defense-oriented and discusses counters. Check the individual list and card text rather than assuming every card uses one shared mechanic. |
| Jeskai Striker | Blue, red, white | A dedicated three-color deck with its own commander pairing and card list; review those specifics against your existing strategy. |
| Sultai Arisen | Black, green, blue | A clan-themed option for players who want this color combination. Its list determines which particular strategies and cards it supports. |
| Mardu Surge | Red, white, black | A clan-themed option for this identity; compare its commander pairing and included cards with the way you want to play. |
| Temur Roar | Green, blue, red | A clan-themed option for this identity; use the official decklist to assess individual inclusions. |
The five product names and color identities are confirmed by Wizards’ Commander decklist announcement. The available official information does not rank them by strength.
Which clan fits your playstyle?
Start with the colors you already enjoy or the color identity your existing deck needs. Then compare the paired commanders and the actual decklist: a clan label identifies the product’s theme, not a guarantee that every card will suit every deck in those colors.

- Choose by color identity: Abzan is white-black-green; Jeskai is blue-red-white; Sultai is black-green-blue; Mardu is red-white-black; Temur is green-blue-red.
- Choose by commander pairing: Look at the commanders’ rules text and decide whether their abilities support the strategy you want to build around.
- Choose by card package: Check the official list for cards you want to play, keep, or use to upgrade another deck. Do not assume a card is suitable just because it shares the deck’s colors.
Wizards’ head designer Mark Rosewater describes the design aim this way: “By the nature of Commander, three-color cards have fewer homes than monocolor cards, but Eli did a wonderful job making sure our multicolor cards were appealing for the Commander decks that can use them.” That is a statement of design intent, not evidence that the decks outperform other options. His article also notes that “The clans have to work well mechanically with the other clans,” reflecting the challenge of making neighboring three-color identities function within the set.
What does “revitalizes” mean for Commander?
For a player, the concrete case for these decks is that they provide five new clan-themed starting points, with distinct color identities, commander pairings, and card lists. Wizards’ design commentary explicitly considered Commander when developing multicolor cards. That supports describing the set as adding new possibilities for three-color deckbuilding.

It does not show that Tarkir: Dragonstorm increased Commander participation, improved win rates, or made three-color decks more competitive. The official product information provides no measured player or gameplay outcome. Treat “revitalizes” as editorial shorthand for fresh options—not as a demonstrated change in the format.
