If Windows says that tbs.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, repair Windows first and then repair the program that triggered the error.
The error messages you may see
Common versions include:
- “The program can’t start because tbs.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because tbs.dll was not found.”
- “There was a problem starting tbs.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “Error loading tbs.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “tbs.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
These messages identify a Windows loader failure, not necessarily the complete cause. The file itself may be absent or damaged, but “the specified module could not be found” can also mean that another dependency required during loading is missing.

Use this repair order:
- Install Windows updates and restart.
- Run DISM, then System File Checker.
- Repair or reinstall the affected application.
- Check antivirus quarantine and the file’s digital signature.
- Investigate TPM availability only after the DLL-loading error is resolved.
- Use System Restore or an in-place Windows repair if Windows cannot restore the protected component.
Microsoft documents the TPM Base Services API and its exported functions, including Tbsip_Submit_Command, through the Windows API documentation.
What tbs.dll does
The name refers to TPM Base Services. The file provides a Windows API that applications can use to submit TPM commands and perform TPM-related operations without directly arbitrating hardware access themselves.
The TBS layer sits between applications and TPM functionality. Depending on the program, the calling software may be a security utility, device-management application, installer, authentication component, or game-related service. The existence of a tbs.dll error does not identify one particular application.
It also does not automatically mean that your TPM hardware is broken. A missing or damaged DLL is a Windows file-loading problem. TPM being disabled, unavailable, or refusing a command is a separate problem that usually appears after the application has successfully loaded its dependencies.
On supported Windows installations, the legitimate file is normally part of the protected operating system and is commonly located under:
%SystemRoot%System32
Windows architecture can involve different loading paths for 32-bit applications on 64-bit systems. Do not select a replacement based only on the filename. File versions, sizes, and hashes vary by Windows release, architecture, and servicing build.
Why the error started
The most likely causes are:
- A corrupted or missing Windows system file
- An incomplete Windows update or failed servicing operation
- Disk or file-system corruption
- Antivirus quarantine or a false detection
- A broken application installation
- A missing dependency reported through the loader
- A 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility problem
- Malware or an unauthorized system modification
If only one application fails, its installation and dependencies deserve early attention. If several Windows features fail or System File Checker reports corruption, repair Windows first.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart
Windows servicing can restore protected components and repair the component store used by later system-repair commands.
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- On some Windows 10 installations, select Update & Security, then Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Launch the affected application again.
If the error disappears, the problem was likely related to incomplete servicing or a damaged component that Windows replaced.
If Windows Update displays an error or repeatedly fails, continue with DISM and SFC. Microsoft also provides Windows Update troubleshooting guidance.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then checks protected system files and replaces damaged copies. Run DISM first because SFC may need the repaired component store as its source.
- Open the Start menu.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- When it completes, run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application again.
Microsoft’s System File Checker instructions describe this DISM-before-SFC order.
If SFC reports that it found and repaired corrupt files, restart before testing. If it reports that it could not repair some files, review the result and continue to the advanced recovery section below.
Repeating SFC without understanding what changed can make troubleshooting slower. Outbyte PC Repair can perform a free scan that shows what needs attention, while repair is handled by the full version; it is optional, and Windows repair commands remain the appropriate first step.
Fix 3: Repair or reinstall the affected application
If just one game or program reports tbs.dll, the application may have a broken installation or another missing dependency that the loader is reporting indirectly.
Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Use the application’s repair option
- Open Settings with Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu on Windows 11, or select the application on Windows 10.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
Not every program provides a Windows repair button. For games, open the official launcher and look for Verify, Verify files, Repair, or a similar option. This checks the application’s own files without replacing Windows components.
Reinstall from the official installer
If repair does not work:
- Uninstall the affected application from Settings → Apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the installer from the application developer or publisher’s official source.
- Install the current version.
- Restart again if the installer requests it.
- Test the program before adding unofficial modifications or DLL files.
A program can show a tbs.dll message when a different dependency is absent. Reinstalling the named DLL alone will not fix that situation. If the program still fails after reinstalling, check its application event log or support information for the full dependency error.
Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine safely
Security software may quarantine a damaged file or, less commonly, falsely identify a legitimate system component.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
tbs.dll. - Check the reported path, detection name, and action.
- Do not restore the file solely because its name looks familiar.
- Restore it only when the security product identifies it as a false positive and the location is the expected Windows system directory.
- Run a full scan after any restoration.
- If malware is suspected, use Microsoft Defender Offline scan from Windows Security → Virus & threat protection → Scan options.
For third-party security software, open its quarantine or history page and follow the vendor’s verification process. If the file is in an unexpected folder, leave it quarantined and investigate the system rather than restoring it.
Fix 5: Check whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit
Windows uses different system-file and dependency paths for 32-bit and 64-bit applications. A 32-bit program on 64-bit Windows does not justify copying a 32-bit replacement into the Windows system directory.
Check the application’s documentation or installer. You can also inspect its executable:
- Open File Explorer.
- Browse to the program’s installation folder.
- Right-click the main
.exefile. - Select Properties.
- Open the Details tab and review the available product information.
The exact tab information varies by application. The safe repair is to reinstall the correct application build and repair Windows itself, not to choose a DLL by filename or architecture guess.
Fix 6: Update drivers only when the evidence points there
A TPM-related application can also depend on firmware, chipset, security-device, or platform drivers. Driver updates are not the primary fix for a genuinely missing protected Windows DLL, so use Device Manager when you have a related device warning or the application documentation identifies a driver problem.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is TPM disabled causing the missing DLL error
Usually, no. TPM state and DLL loading are different layers.
After Windows can load the application and its dependencies, check TPM status:
Recommended Free Tools
- Press Windows + R.
- Type:
tpm.msc
- Press Enter.
- Review the status shown by the TPM Management console.
If the console reports that a compatible TPM cannot be found, the hardware may be disabled in firmware, unavailable to Windows, or unsupported by the system. That does not prove that tbs.dll is missing. Resolve the loader error first, then investigate TPM configuration.
Windows Hello, BitLocker, security software, and anti-cheat components may use TPM capabilities, but the presence of one of these features does not establish the cause of a tbs.dll message.
Should you run regsvr32 tbs.dll
No. regsvr32 is for DLLs that provide COM registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. Microsoft documents regsvr32 as a registration tool, not as a general-purpose missing-DLL repair command.
There is no Microsoft instruction to register tbs.dll. Running:
regsvr32 tbs.dll
may produce an error saying that the module loaded but the DllRegisterServer entry point was not found. That result does not repair the Windows component.
Why copying or downloading tbs.dll is unsafe
Avoid DLL-index sites, “DLL fixer” utilities, and arbitrary copies from another computer. A replacement can have the wrong Windows build, architecture, servicing state, or malicious modification. Placing it beside a game or application can also make Windows load an unintended file.
Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, the application’s official installer, or a valid Windows installation source instead. Microsoft describes manual replacement of protected system files only as an advanced recovery procedure using a known-good file from the same Windows version and build.
If DISM and SFC do not fix the error
Try these steps in order:
- Restart and test the exact application again.
- Open Event Viewer by searching for it in Start.
- Select Windows Logs → Application.
- Look for an error recorded at the time of the failure.
- Repair or reinstall the affected application.
- If corruption returns, check the drive for file-system problems. An administrator Command Prompt can run:
chkdsk /f C:
Windows may schedule the check for the next restart.
If Windows Update is broken and you have a matching repair source, Microsoft documents this form:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace the placeholder with a valid repair source that matches the installed Windows version and build.
If the issue began after a known update, driver change, cleanup operation, or software installation, use System Restore:
- Search Start for Create a restore point.
- Open it.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the problem began.
- Review affected programs and complete the restoration.
Back up important files first. If System Restore is unavailable or unsuccessful, an in-place Windows repair using official installation media can replace Windows components while preserving the existing installation, depending on the selected options. Contact Microsoft Support when DISM, SFC, and an in-place repair cannot establish system integrity.

FAQ
Is tbs.dll part of Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
No. It is a Windows TPM Base Services component. Reinstall those runtimes only when the application’s own installer specifically identifies one of them as missing.
Where should the real file be?
It is commonly found under %SystemRoot%System32 on Windows. Do not use a fixed version, size, or hash as a universal reference because servicing builds and architectures differ.
Can a game anti-cheat program cause this error?
A game or security component may call Windows TPM APIs, but there is no universal list of programs that produce this message. Repair the game through its launcher and repair Windows rather than deleting or replacing tbs.dll.
What if the file exists but the program still says it is missing?
The loader may be unable to find another dependency, or the application may be using the wrong architecture. Check the application’s event information, then reinstall the application and run DISM followed by SFC.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Should I enable TPM in firmware?
Only after the DLL-loading problem is resolved and the application reports a genuine TPM availability or authorization issue. A disabled TPM does not by itself explain a missing tbs.dll.
When is Microsoft support appropriate?
Use support or an in-place Windows repair when protected files remain damaged after DISM and SFC, corruption returns, or you cannot verify that the system is trustworthy.
