winusbcoinstaller.dll is a legacy Microsoft WinUSB installation component, not a general Windows application runtime. When Windows says winusbcoinstaller.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, repair the USB device package or older installer that requested it rather than downloading a random DLL.
| Detail | What it means |
|---|---|
| File | winusbcoinstaller.dll |
| Role | User-mode co-installer used while installing some WinUSB-based USB drivers |
| Origin | Microsoft Windows Driver Kit 8 redistributable components or a vendor’s bundled driver package |
| Modern status | Generally unnecessary on Windows 10 and Windows 11 |
| Related file | winusbcoinstaller2.dll, used by another legacy WinUSB package |
| Architecture | Packages may contain x86 or x64 components |
| Reported version | 6.0.5841.16388 has appeared in third-party indexes, but it is not a universal required version |
What winusbcoinstaller.dll does
WinUSB is Microsoft’s driver framework for USB devices that do not need a custom kernel-mode driver. The normal WinUSB runtime uses the inbox winusb.sys driver and the user-mode winusb.dll API library.

The co-installer is different. It is an installation helper referenced by older driver packages through an INF file. It may run when you install a phone tool, development board, flashing utility, USB transfer program, recovery tool, or other hardware-specific software.

That does not mean every Windows installation should contain the file. It normally belongs beside the installer or driver package that needs it.
Microsoft also states that WinUSB co-installers are not required on Windows 10 and later. A current driver package should reference the inbox WinUSB driver through its INF instead of depending on this legacy DLL.
Why the error appears
The timing of the message usually identifies the cause:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- While plugging in a device: the device’s driver package is incomplete, obsolete, or damaged.
- While installing a program: the program bundles an old USB driver component.
- At application startup: the application may be launching an installer, service, or device helper rather than using the DLL as a normal runtime dependency.
- After an antivirus detection: the file may have been quarantined.
- After a Windows update: an old installer may no longer be compatible, even though Windows itself is functioning correctly.
Common messages include:
- “The program can’t start because winusbcoinstaller.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because winusbcoinstaller.dll was not found.”
- “There was a problem starting winusbcoinstaller.dll.”
- “Error loading winusbcoinstaller.dll.”
- “winusbcoinstaller.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
These are loader messages. They do not prove that this DLL alone is defective. A missing dependency of the DLL, a wrong architecture, or a broken INF can produce a similar result.
Fix winusbcoinstaller.dll errors in order
1. Identify the device or installer responsible
First reproduce the error and note what happens immediately beforehand.
- Disconnect recently added USB devices.
- Restart Windows.
- Reconnect one device at a time.
- If the message appears during setup, note the product name and installer version.
- Check Settings > Apps > Installed apps for recently installed USB utilities, phone software, board tools, flashing tools, or recovery programs.
- Open Device Manager by right-clicking Start and selecting Device Manager.
- Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers, Other devices, and any category matching the hardware.
- Look for a yellow warning icon.
- Right-click the suspected device and select Properties.
- Read the General tab for a Code number, then check Details > Hardware Ids.
The hardware ID and the exact installer name are more useful than the DLL filename. If the error appears only when one device is connected, that device’s package is the primary suspect.
2. Repair or reinstall the vendor’s complete package
The safest fix is the current driver or application installer from the hardware or software publisher.

- Disconnect the USB device.
- In Settings > Apps > Installed apps, uninstall the related program if it is listed.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the current Windows 10 or Windows 11 package from the publisher’s official support page.
- Check whether the download offers separate x86 and x64 packages.
- Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator.
- Follow the setup prompts.
- Restart if requested.
- Reconnect the device only when the installer says to do so.
Prefer a package that supports Windows 10 or Windows 11 and no longer uses a legacy co-installer. Reinstalling the complete package restores the INF, driver files, services, firmware tools, and permissions that a loose DLL cannot provide.
If the vendor offers only a Vista, Windows 7, or Windows XP-era installer, the package may simply be obsolete. Look for a newer driver, firmware utility, or Windows Update-supported installation method before forcing the old setup.
When manually hunting through device models and driver revisions becomes repetitive, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show what needs attention; its free scan identifies issues, while driver installation is handled by the full version. Reinstalling the specific vendor application remains the definitive fix when that application owns the missing file.
3. Try Windows Update and Device Manager
Windows Update may provide a modern driver that avoids the old co-installer.

- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Open Advanced options > Optional updates > Driver updates, if available.
- Install the driver that clearly matches the device.
- Restart Windows and test the device.
You can also use Device Manager:
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- If Windows finds nothing, return to the device menu and select Uninstall device.
- Restart the computer.
- Reconnect the device and allow Windows to detect it.
Device Manager is a useful secondary route, but the manufacturer’s complete package is often better because it may include the correct INF, architecture, firmware updater, and application dependencies.
4. Use the WDK redistributable only for a genuinely old package
For a legacy driver that explicitly requests this file, Microsoft documents the Windows Driver Kit 8 redistributable components as the appropriate source. See Microsoft’s redistributable framework components documentation.
Do not install the WDK components merely because the filename appears in an error. Confirm that:
- the device package is genuinely old;
- the vendor’s instructions call for the WDK redistributable;
- the package matches x86 or x64;
- the installer and driver files come from a trusted, signed source.
A 32-bit installer can require the x86 component even on 64-bit Windows. Do not replace it with an x64 copy, and do not substitute winusbcoinstaller2.dll for winusbcoinstaller.dll. They are related legacy components, not interchangeable filenames.

5. Check Windows Security quarantine
Security software may remove a co-installer from an otherwise trusted package.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review detections related to the device installer or DLL.
- Expand a detection to inspect its path and source.
- Restore the file only if it came from a trusted, signed vendor package and you have confirmed it is a false positive.
- Reinstall the complete driver package afterward.
Do not restore an unexplained DLL simply because its filename matches the error. Microsoft describes this workflow in its Protection History guidance.
6. Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Use these tools when several unrelated Windows components are failing, Windows Update is broken, or system corruption is suspected. They will not recreate a vendor DLL that was never part of Windows.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for the command to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Retry the device installer.
Microsoft recommends DISM before SFC because DISM can provide the repair source used by System File Checker. If Windows Update cannot provide that source, use a matching Windows installation source:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with the correct repair source. Microsoft provides additional DISM repair-source instructions.
If you repeatedly run repair commands without knowing which system files changed, Outbyte PC Repair can provide a free scan showing detected Windows issues; repairs are performed by the full version, and it is not required for a vendor driver package that was never installed.
7. Use System Restore after a recent change
If the error began immediately after installing a driver or application and an appropriate restore point exists:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the failure.
- Select Scan for affected programs.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next > Finish.
System Restore does not delete personal documents, but it can remove recently installed drivers and programs. Follow Microsoft’s System Restore instructions.

What not to do
Do not download the DLL from a random website
Standalone DLL downloads can contain malware, use the wrong architecture, be unsigned, or come from an incompatible package. Even an authentic copy may not fix the missing INF, driver, firmware utility, or dependent module.
Use the device manufacturer’s complete installer, Windows Update, or Microsoft’s documented WDK redistributable source for a verified legacy package.
Do not copy it into System32
The file may be designed to remain in the vendor’s driver directory. Copying it globally can create version conflicts and does not make Windows recognize the associated driver package.
Do not run regsvr32 as a generic repair
Do not use:
regsvr32 winusbcoinstaller.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. A driver co-installer is invoked by the device-installation system through the driver package and INF, not repaired through arbitrary registration. Microsoft documents the command’s purpose in its regsvr32 reference.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Do not reinstall unrelated runtimes first
Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, and .NET are not the normal source of winusbcoinstaller.dll. Install or repair them only when the application’s own documentation identifies a separate runtime error.
If reinstalling does not work
Check the vendor installer log and Windows device-installation log rather than assuming the DLL is the only problem. The Windows log is commonly found at:
C:WindowsINFsetupapi.dev.log
Also check:
- the device’s Code number in Device Manager;
- whether the installer is x86 or x64;
- whether the package refers to
winusbcoinstaller2.dll; - whether the installer is digitally signed;
- whether the device works under a new local administrator profile;
- whether Windows Security removed part of the package;
- whether the device appears under a different USB port.
If the old installer works on Windows 7 but fails on Windows 10 or Windows 11, treat compatibility as the likely issue. Seek a current vendor package instead of forcing the obsolete co-installer.

FAQ
Is winusbcoinstaller.dll a Windows system file?
It is a Microsoft WinUSB co-installer, but it is not a universal Windows 10 or Windows 11 system dependency. It is normally supplied with an older device or application package.
Should I install Visual C++ to fix it?
Usually no. The file belongs to a legacy USB driver installation path, not the Visual C++ runtime.
Why does the error mention the DLL when another file is missing?
The Windows loader can report a requested module when one of that module’s dependencies is absent. Check the complete installer log and package rather than replacing only the named file.
Can I use the x64 file on a 32-bit installer?
No. Use the architecture required by the installer and device package. A 32-bit installer may need x86 components even on a 64-bit Windows computer.
Does Windows 11 need this file?
Modern Windows generally does not need WinUSB co-installers. A current INF should use the inbox WinUSB driver. If an old installer still demands this DLL, update or replace the installer.
When should I reset Windows?
Only after identifying broader system damage and exhausting the vendor reinstall, Windows Update, Device Manager, DISM/SFC, and System Restore options. A reset is not the normal solution for one missing legacy driver component.
