Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →tdh.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows system file used by Event Tracing for Windows (ETW). If tdh.dll is missing, corrupt, or incompatible, repair Windows first rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
What tdh.dll does
The name refers to Trace Data Helper. Microsoft’s TDH API documentation describes the programming interface used to read and interpret ETW event metadata and payloads.
TDH is used indirectly by diagnostics, monitoring, security, tracing, and other Windows software. It is an inbox Windows component, not a Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX package, .NET runtime, or ordinary game DLL. Microsoft documents the API header as tdh.h, the import library as Tdh.lib, and the runtime library as Tdh.dll.
TDH APIs are available starting with Windows Vista. A damaged copy can therefore affect Windows tools or an application that uses Windows tracing, but there is no single application or game that can be identified as the universal cause of these errors.

Identify the correct architecture and version
On 64-bit Windows, the normal locations are:
- 64-bit
tdh.dll:%windir%System32 - 32-bit
tdh.dll:%windir%SysWOW64
Those directory names are counterintuitive. System32 normally contains 64-bit system files, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system files.
Historical Windows builds have included versions such as these:
| Architecture | Example file version | Approximate historical size |
|---|---|---|
| 32-bit | 10.0.14393.0 | 0.53 MB |
| 64-bit | 10.0.14393.0 | 0.65 MB |
| 32-bit | 10.0.10586.0 | 0.74 MB |
| 64-bit | 10.0.10586.0 | 0.94 MB |
| 32-bit | 6.3.9600.17031 | 0.72 MB |
| 32-bit | 6.1.7601.18247 | 0.59 MB |
These are examples of historical file metadata, not a download list. The correct version must match the installed Windows build and architecture. Do not replace it with the newest file you can find.
What the error messages mean
Windows may show any of these messages:
- “The program can’t start because tdh.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because tdh.dll was not found.”
- “Error loading tdh.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The specified procedure could not be found.”
- “tdh.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
- “The application has failed to start because tdh.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem.”
A missing-file message does not always prove that tdh.dll itself is absent. “The specified module could not be found” can also mean that a dependency required by the DLL is missing.
The wording provides useful clues:
- Missing or not found: Windows or the application cannot locate a usable copy.
- Specified module could not be found: the named file or one of its dependencies may be unavailable.
- Specified procedure could not be found: the application found a DLL, but it does not contain the function the application expects. This often points to a mismatched version or architecture.
- Not designed to run on Windows: corruption, an incompatible binary, or a wrong-architecture copy is possible.
Before repairing anything, note whether the problem affects several programs or only one. If Windows tools and multiple applications fail, treat it as a Windows component problem. If one game or application fails while everything else works, repair that application as well.
Fix 1: Restart and install Windows updates
A pending or interrupted update can leave system components inconsistent.
Windows 11
- Select Start.
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Check for updates again after restarting.
Windows 10
- Select Start.
- Open Settings.
- Select Update & Security.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install the available updates and restart.
Try the affected program again. If tdh.dll still fails, continue with DISM and System File Checker. Do not copy a DLL manually before completing those repairs.
Fix 2: Run DISM, then System File Checker
Microsoft recommends running Deployment Image Servicing and Management before SFC because DISM can repair the Windows component source that SFC uses.

- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
Wait for the command to finish. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Leave the window open until verification reaches 100 percent. Restart Windows when both commands have finished, then launch the affected program again.
Microsoft’s System File Checker instructions cover this repair sequence.
When SFC reports that it found and repaired corrupt files, restart and test again. If it reports that it could not repair some files, run DISM once more, restart, and run SFC again. If the problem remains, inspect the CBS log referenced by SFC or move to the matching repair-source procedure below.
Repeating SFC without checking what changed can make troubleshooting unnecessarily slow. Outbyte PC Repair can show issues found by its free scan, while the repair is performed by the full version; it is optional, and DISM/SFC remain the authoritative Windows repair path.

Use a matching repair source if Windows Update is damaged
If DISM cannot obtain repair files through Windows Update, use a matching Windows installation source:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with the actual Windows folder from your repair media or mounted installation source.
The source must match the installed Windows edition, version, language, and architecture. A mismatched source can fail or leave the component store in an inconsistent state. Microsoft provides additional SFC repair-source guidance.
Fix 3: Repair the application or game that reports the error
If only one application fails, Windows may be healthy and the application may have a damaged installation, stale bundled files, or a missing dependency.
For a supported Windows application:
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Select Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Test the application.
If Repair does not help, use Reset if available, or uninstall and reinstall the application from its publisher’s official installer. Save application data first if the program stores local settings or projects.

- MICROSOFT WINDOWS 11 PRO (INGLES) FPP 64-BIT ENG INTL USB FLASH DRIVE
For a game, open its launcher and look for Verify, Verify integrity, Repair, or an equivalent file-checking command. The exact menu depends on the launcher. Verify the game files before reinstalling the entire game.
If reinstalling the application restores the error immediately, inspect the application directory for a manually copied tdh.dll. The application directory is searched before normal system directories in the standard DLL search order, so an incompatible private copy can override the Windows copy. Microsoft documents this behavior in its DLL search-order reference.
Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine
A security product can quarantine a file, although an unexpected copy outside the Windows directories can also indicate tampering or DLL hijacking.
In Windows Security:
- Open Start.
- Type
Windows Security. - Open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Expand any detection related to
tdh.dll. - Check the file path and detection details.
Do not restore the file merely because an application will not start. Confirm that the path is the expected Windows system directory, scan the computer, and verify that the file is genuinely a Microsoft system component. Do not disable security software to force the application to launch.
If the file was quarantined from an application folder, repair or reinstall that application instead. A fake DLL placed beside an executable can be used for DLL hijacking.
Fix 5: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
A 32-bit program needs the 32-bit Windows copy. A 64-bit program needs the 64-bit copy. Do not copy a 64-bit DLL into SysWOW64, and do not copy a 32-bit DLL into System32.
To identify the failing program’s architecture, check the publisher’s documentation or inspect the application through a suitable Windows diagnostic process. The important point is to avoid solving a 32-bit application problem with a manually selected 64-bit file.

- Use the application’s repair or verification feature.
- Reinstall from the official publisher if repair fails.
- Run a security scan.
Do not replace a Windows system DLL with one taken from another Windows release.
Fix 6: Update drivers only when the failure points to tracing or hardware software
Drivers are not the normal source of a missing inbox tdh.dll, and reinstalling random drivers is not a substitute for DISM and SFC. Consider driver repair only if the error began with a hardware utility, monitoring tool, security product, or driver package update.
To check drivers:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the category related to the affected hardware.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Note the provider and version.
- Use Update Driver or obtain the current driver from the hardware manufacturer.
- Restart Windows and test the original application.
Avoid replacing several drivers at once because that makes the cause harder to identify. Outbyte Driver Updater can show which drivers are stale through its free scan, while installation is handled by the full version; it is optional and does not replace repairing Windows or the affected application.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat not to do
Do not download tdh.dll from a DLL website
Random DLL download sites sites can provide malware, the wrong Windows build, the wrong architecture, or a file that does not match its dependencies. A downloaded file may also hide the real cause, such as component-store corruption or a damaged application.
There is no verified standalone Microsoft tdh.dll installer or official redistributable package. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, matching installation media, or the affected application’s official installer.
Do not run regsvr32
regsvr32 is used for DLLs that expose registration functions, commonly COM or ActiveX components. TDH is an ETW API library, not a registration-based component. Running this command is expected to fail or be irrelevant:
regsvr32 tdh.dll
Microsoft explains the registration context in its DLL registration guidance.

Do not copy files between System32 and SysWOW64
The names are not interchangeable storage folders. Copying a file into the wrong directory can create a second problem and may break applications that previously worked.

- Repair or verify the application.
- Reinstall it from the official publisher.
- Check antivirus Protection history.
- Confirm whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit.
If several Windows components fail, Windows Update cannot repair itself, or DISM and SFC repeatedly report errors, the issue is broader than tdh.dll.
Last-resort Windows recovery
Use broader recovery options only after application repair and normal Windows servicing have failed.
- System Restore: Use a restore point created before the problem began. This changes broader system state and is not a targeted DLL repair.
- Windows 11 repair reinstall: Open Settings > System > Recovery > Fix problems using Windows Update > Reinstall now when that option is available. This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings.
- Reset this PC: Consider this only after backing up important files and reviewing the available options. It has a much broader effect than repairing one system component.
FAQ
Is tdh.dll safe?
A copy in the expected Windows system directory with a valid Microsoft signature is consistent with the genuine component. A copy beside an unrelated executable deserves additional scrutiny because malware can use the same filename.
Should I reinstall Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Not as the first response. tdh.dll is an inbox Windows component, not a normal Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET runtime file. Repair Windows with updates, DISM, and SFC first.
Does reinstalling the application always fix it?
No. It is the correct branch when one application fails, but a system-wide failure requires Windows component repair. For games, verify files before reinstalling the complete game.
Can I manually download the correct version?
Do not use a DLL download sites site. The correct file is serviced with the matching Windows build. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, matching installation media, or a supported Windows recovery option.
