Teardown has an 80 Metascore on Metacritic’s PC critic-review page, where its reception is labeled “Generally Favorable.” Critics’ praise centers on its destructive voxel sandbox, while reviews also describe the challenge of planning and carrying out heists. The score is a snapshot of critic reviews, not a substitute for their individual arguments.

What is Teardown?

Teardown is a voxel-based destruction game built around planning and executing heists. Its official Steam listing describes a fully destructible world where players can break or move objects to create routes through levels. It lists solo and multiplayer play, and names Tuxedo Labs as developer and publisher. Steam gives the game’s release date as April 21, 2022.

That setup connects two kinds of play: the open-ended pleasure of reshaping an environment and the more deliberate task of devising a route or strategy for a mission. The reviews’ differing emphases make sense in light of that combination.

What does the Metacritic score mean?

Metacritic’s PC critic-review page showed an 80 Metascore and the label “Generally Favorable” when accessed in 2026. The page displayed 20 critic reviews at that time; both the score and review count can change as the page updates.

Teardown [Deluxe Edition]
  • Fully destructible voxel environments
  • Realistic physical simulation of objects, debris, vehicles, water, fire and smoke
  • Wide variety of tools ranging from a sledgehammer, blow torch and fire extinguisher to guns and explosives
  • Multiple campaigns with over 40 escalating missions
  • Sandbox mode for you build, explore and destroy various environments

The Metascore summarizes the critic reviews collected there. It does not tell you whether a particular critic valued the missions, the sandbox freedom, or the destruction most. Nor is it a player-review score: Steam’s user-review information is a separate body of evidence and should not be folded into the critic aggregate.

What do critics praise about the destruction?

Destruction is more than visual spectacle in Teardown: it gives players tools for solving problems. Breaking through a wall or moving an object can open a shortcut, alter a route, or change how a heist unfolds. PC Gamer’s excerpt on Metacritic calls it “An endlessly delightful destruction sandbox.” That line captures the appeal of experimenting with a world that can be physically reshaped, rather than treating it as a fixed backdrop.

The freedom can also mean choosing how much planning to do. Hooked Gamers’ excerpt on Metacritic describes working out a strategy to solve puzzles, or taking a “scorched earth” approach and destroying everything in the way. These are two different ways to engage with the same system: careful route-making and unrestrained destruction.

How do the heists shape the experience?

The heist framing gives the sandbox a goal. The official Steam description emphasizes planning and executing heists, while the Hooked Gamers excerpt highlights the challenge of planning a strategy and carrying it out. That means the game is not only about what can be destroyed; it also asks players to use destruction in service of a successful run.

Teardown Deluxe Edition (PlayStation 5)
  • Realistic physical simulation of objects, debris, vehicles, water, fire and smoke
  • A variety of tools, from sledgehammer to welding torches and fire extinguishers to weapons and explosives
  • Numerous campaigns with over 40 missions and increasing difficulty
  • Contents: The Game, TIME CAMPERS DLC and FOLKRACE DLC

Critics’ comments point to a tension between open-ended play and mission constraints. Sandbox freedom invites improvisation, but a heist asks for a plan and execution. Whether that structure feels motivating or restrictive depends on what a player wants from the game. The excerpts available here do not establish a single shared verdict on campaign structure, so it is more useful to weigh the specific review arguments than to treat one criticism as consensus.

Is Teardown mostly a sandbox or a heist game?

It combines both. The destruction systems support experimentation and chaotic play, while the heists add planning and objectives. The official listing also describes solo and multiplayer play; that feature information alone does not establish how every critic evaluated those modes. When comparing reviews, look for which aspect each critic emphasizes: destruction and physics, the planning challenge, sandbox freedom versus mission constraints, replayability, mod support, or the structure of the campaign.

How should you read the critic reviews?

Start with the aggregate as a broad indicator, then read individual reviews for the reasons behind it. A critic who prizes open-ended destruction may respond differently from one focused on mission pacing or the demands of planning a successful heist. Metacritic’s page attributes review excerpts to their outlets, but a short excerpt is not the full argument or context of the original review.
