It is best approached as a choice-led story with memory exploration and puzzles, not an action game. Whether it suits you depends on how much you enjoy weighing conflicting accounts and following character relationships; the available sources establish the premise and design, but not a defensible current review-score consensus.
What is Tell Me Why about?
Twins Tyler and Alyson Ronan reunite in the fictional town of Delos Crossing, southeastern Alaska, and revisit memories of a troubled childhood while investigating a family mystery. Their unusual bond lets them return to memories that do not always agree. The player weighs those competing versions of the past, and choices shape the twins’ relationship, the strength of their bond, and the direction of their lives. The publisher describes this memory conflict using the idea of a “Rashomon effect”; that is the creators’ framing of the story, not an independent critical verdict. Xbox Wire’s preview and the official game site outline the premise.
Delos Crossing is a fictional small town, not a real Alaskan community. The setting and family mystery are intended to work together: exploring the town provides context for the twins’ memories and the people connected to their childhood.
How the story and choices work
Three chapters built around memory
The game is divided into three chapters. Its central activity is narrative investigation: explore, revisit memories, solve puzzles, and decide how to interpret events. The original release schedule was August 27, September 3, and September 10, 2020; those are launch dates, not a guide to present-day access.

Decisions focus on the twins’ relationship
Choices are framed around how Tyler and Alyson understand and respond to their shared past. They can affect their bond and future, but the official descriptions do not quantify how many outcomes differ or how substantially each decision changes the plot. If you want choices that drive frequent action sequences or radically branching campaigns, that is not what the stated design promises.
What that means for pacing
The format points toward a story-led experience in which investigation and conversation carry more weight than combat. Whether the mystery unfolds at the right pace, or its choices feel consequential in play, is a matter for individual judgment; the available sources do not establish a reliable critical consensus or firsthand assessment to settle those questions.

Characters, representation, and recognition
Tyler is a transgender protagonist. Xbox Wire reports that the development process included Alaska Native perspectives and identifies Huna Heritage Foundation executive director Amelia Wilson among the contributors. DONTNOD has also reported working with GLAAD on representation. These are claims about the creators’ consultation process, not proof that every player or community member will judge the portrayal successful. Readers assessing representation may want to consider the game itself and perspectives from people familiar with the communities depicted.
Tell Me Why received Best Message-Bearer Game and Best Narrative Design at the Académie française des Arts et Techniques du jeu vidéo’s Pégases 2021 awards. DONTNOD announced the wins on March 18, 2021, following the March 17 ceremony. The same announcement said the game was nominated for the BAFTA Games Awards’ Game Beyond Entertainment category; it did not claim a BAFTA win. DONTNOD’s awards announcement includes the details.

Platforms, accessibility, and content rating
As checked on October 8, 2026, the Xbox listing names Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PC, Xbox Cloud Gaming, and handheld play, and identifies Xbox Play Anywhere. Its current US storefront shows “Free+” as well as a separate “Tell Me Why: Chapters 1-3” edition displayed at $19.99. These labels and prices can change and may differ by region; consult the live Xbox listing for your account and location rather than treating either label as a universal entitlement or price.
The Xbox page displays 11 accessibility features. Steam’s listing includes captions among its features, along with Steam achievements, Steam Cloud, and Family Sharing. If you rely on a particular option, confirm that it is available on the platform and edition you plan to use: a general feature count does not establish that every feature is identical across platforms. The Xbox listing displays an ESRB Mature 17+ rating with mild blood, drug reference, strong language, and violence as descriptors. Ratings and descriptors are platform- and region-specific; check the storefront or rating information relevant to your location.

- A good fit if: you want a compact, single-player story centered on family history, memory, and the relationship between two protagonists.
- Think twice if: you mainly want action-heavy combat, fast-paced play, or a documented guarantee that each choice produces a large plot divergence.
- Check before committing if: a particular accessibility feature, regional price, subscription entitlement, or content detail is essential to your decision.
The clearest reason to consider the game is its specific premise: two siblings trying to make sense of a shared past when their memories conflict. The clearest qualification is that the available evidence describes that design but does not establish how successfully its pacing and decisions land for every player. A live demo, if offered in your region, or a current full review from a source whose judgment you trust can help answer that experiential question.

Where to play
Xbox currently lists console, PC, cloud, and handheld access, while Steam lists a PC version. Availability, purchase options, and subscription status can vary. Check the platform store before buying or assuming access through a subscription. The official site also describes controller play, but a new controller is not established as a requirement.
