In architectural glass, it describes glass treated with heat or chemicals; in steel standards, it can refer to alloys processed by quenching and tempering. This article focuses on architectural glass, the best-documented meaning in the available technical sources, and flags where the standards apply.
What does tempered mean for glass?
For architectural glass, tempering is a heat-treatment process. Glass is heated close to its softening temperature, then cooled rapidly and uniformly. That process creates compressive stresses at the surface. The National Glass Association identifies heat-strengthened and fully tempered glass as two types of heat-treated glass; they are distinct product categories, not interchangeable names. National Glass Association, Recommended Applications for Heat-Treated Glass (2019).
A Canadian federal regulation defines tempered glass for the glass doors and enclosures it governs as glass treated chemically or thermally so that, when broken, it disintegrates into many small granular pieces. That is a jurisdiction- and product-specific legal definition, not a universal definition for all tempered products. Canada, Safety of Glazing Materials Regulations.
How are heat-strengthened and fully tempered glass different?
Both are heat-treated glass, but standards treat them as separate products with different requirements. Do not assume that the word “tempered” alone tells you which product has been specified. Check the product designation and the applicable standard. In the United States, ASTM C1048-25 covers heat-strengthened and fully tempered flat glass within its scope. ASTM C1048-25.

What is heat-soaked tempered glass?
Heat-soaked glass is a further specified category, not simply another name for all tempered glass. ISO 20657:2017 covers heat-soaked tempered soda lime silicate safety glass for buildings. ISO reports that this edition was reviewed and confirmed in 2022 and remains current. For comparison, ISO 12540:2017 covers flat tempered soda lime silicate safety glass for buildings; it was also confirmed in 2022. These standards have different scopes and are not interchangeable. ISO 20657:2017; ISO 12540:2017.
Can tempered glass be cut or drilled afterward?
For flat glass covered by ASTM C1048-25, fabrication is completed before heat strengthening or tempering. The specification includes cutting to overall dimensions, edgework, drilled holes, notching, grinding, sandblasting and etching among the fabrication operations performed beforehand. It states: “Heat-treated flat glass cannot be cut after tempering.” This guidance applies to the specification’s covered products; confirm requirements for any other product with its applicable standard and supplier. - Rubber feet keeps it from slipping on the countertop.
- Hygienic. Glass chopping board resists stains and odors.
- Dishwasher safe. A nonporous cutting surface makes it easy to clean.
- Can be used as a cutting mat, clear trivet, cheese plate or simply as an everyday use kitchen board.
Where is heat-treated architectural glass used?
Examples include building vision and spandrel areas, entrances, glass railings and balustrades. These are examples of use, not a declaration that any particular glass is suitable for any particular installation. The choice depends on the product, building assembly, intended application and governing requirements. National Glass Association, Recommended Applications for Heat-Treated Glass (2019).
ASTM C1048-25 also notes that a strain pattern may be visible under certain lighting conditions and that glass support and deflection need consideration in wind-load design. Those details matter when specifying or reviewing an assembly, rather than when interpreting the word alone. The standard covers monolithic flat coated or uncoated glass made on a horizontal heat-treating system for general construction and other applications; it excludes bent glass and glass heat-treated on a vertical system. ASTM C1048-25.

Which standard applies?
There is no single standard implied by the word “tempered.” Select the document for the product, application and jurisdiction, and check the exact edition and scope. The available standards illustrate why labels alone are insufficient:
| Standard | Scope identified by its publisher | Status or qualification |
|---|---|---|
| ASTM C1048-25 | Heat-strengthened and fully tempered monolithic flat glass, coated or uncoated, produced on a horizontal heat-treating system; bent and vertical-system products are excluded. | ASTM catalogue entry is active; last updated March 25, 2025. |

What should you check when specifying tempered glass?
- Product type: Is it heat-strengthened, fully tempered, or heat-soaked tempered glass?
- Application and assembly: What role will the glass serve, and what requirements apply to the complete installation?
- Jurisdiction and standard: Which local rules and product standard govern the project? Do not treat ASTM and ISO documents as equivalent.
- Fabrication: Confirm all dimensions, holes, edgework and other fabrication before tempering where the applicable specification requires it.
- Documentation: Request supplier documentation identifying the exact product and standard for the intended use.
Does “tempered” also refer to steel?
Yes. ISO 683-2:2016 covers alloy steels for quenching and tempering, among other delivery and product-form requirements. If the word appears in a steel specification, glass guidance does not answer the question: identify the material and the relevant standard first. ISO 683-2:2016.
